Ladell Betts may get a contract extension

Post by Cappster »

I heard on triplexespnradio that the redskins and betts are working on a contract extension. Anyone know anything more about this situation?

It was mentioned in LaCanfora's Post article as well. Definitely good news for the Redskins. He has talent and could be starting back on plenty of teams in the league. Before the Bengals game I was wondering whether the Skins would trade Betts for a high draft pick or for a solid o-lineman. But given CP's injury, I'm sure any thought of trading Betts has disappeared...

Definitely GOOD move!!!

Good move as long as it doesn't take too much salary cap space.

Having a reliable backup RB is good regardless of the cap ramifications.

We have other players to sign. Cooley comes to mind, I'm sure there are others. There are limits.

I wouldn't go that far. I can only think of a few teams on which he would even have a change to compete for a job (Jets, Cleveland, Vikings come to mind). But it is a good move as long as we can get him without it having too much of an effect on the salary cap.

What's the chance that this would have negative cap implications? A new contract means being able to spread any bonus money over the whole contract, etc. I'm sure it will be fine.

Has anyone considered that Al Saunders might have been talking up Betts so much, so they can get something for him in trade?

I voted "not sure". This cat gets less than 1/3 of the carries but gets injured three times as often.

On the other hand, Saunders likes him and he's been decent when in the game.

I think talent wise, he is one of the best backups in the league. He has had some injury problems but when he is on the field the man has some moves. I also think if Portis isn't ready for the opener, we wouldn't have to worry about running the ball effectively.

First, lets see how he does while Portis is hurt. Then we can start talking about an extension or not.

Just for the record, Portis averaged, in his highest year ('05) 22 carries/game. Betts' high was 5.6 in '04, so less than 1/3 is about right. Obviously, durability's a concern with a RB, and we can't know if Betts has it until he actually has 300+ carries in a season.

I wouldn't be surprised to see some two back sets this season. Saunders says he really likes what Betts brings to the table.

Saunders said that without seeing him in pads. His career average is less than 4 yds/carry. He's an adequate back up.

Three runs at 3.4 yards is a first down. My 2 cents

True, but he doesn't get 3.4 yds on every run, it is an average. He may get 10 yds on 1 carry then 2 on each of the next 3. That's a 4 yd average. I just checked he's averaged 3.96 yds/carry. Last yr it was 3.8. That is not terrible, but not starting quality either.By comparison, Rock Cartwright has averaged 4.5 yds/carry. Portis has averaged 4.7.

You're right. about that. Every backup to a stud running back looks great at times in their limited roles. He is really athletic but I want to see him carry a full load of carries before I'm on board with the extension

In his defense, a lot of RBs get better as the game progresses and they get more carries. When the defense wears down, the RB just begins to warm up, so his ypc could improve. My 2 cents

on some of those redskins.com videos they talk about how there will be two back sets and betts will become a receiving threat! so we'll get to see him come out of the back field often whether or not clinton is in there to begin with

On the John Riggins Show yesterday, Riggo said that the biggest drop off between Portis and Betts is blocking, "Betts is not as good at picking up the Blitz". He said Portis is a more complete back.

He started as a FB, so he should be a good blocker. You know he'll give 100% on every play.

I would love for Betts to get an extension. He is a great backup and solid when asked to perform in starting duty.
