Not trying to rain on your little parade there, buddy, but there's no level of damage on this type of injury. It's either a dislocation or it's not.

I said he could play in a game tomorrow if need be. What, would you like me to say he'd also run for 300 yards? Without surgery, the shoulder is vulnerable and he'll be in a lot of pain when it really gets laced into.

You'll see what I mean come Week 1.

He's still liable to reinjure it with any one pop. The most a player can do is strengthen the muscles around the joint so that the bone is less likely to shift out of the socket. Even then, it's not repairable naturally. He needs to go under the knife to do that.

According to the chart here,45% people with shoulder dislocations who did not have surgery, did not re-dislocate their shoulders.

One of the key factors influencing recurrence is the age of the patient. You said you were in high school when you suffered your injury. Recurrence is something like 90% for people between the ages of 10 and 20. Portis is 25. Chance of recurrence goes down dramatically at his age.

Some shoulders are rendered more unstable than others after a dislocation. Here is a description of how doctors evaluate unstable shoulders. Note items 3 and 4. Portis' shoulder popped back in by itself immediately after he suffered the injury.

Also Portis suffered a subluxation which is "A partial dislocation of a joint in which the bone ends are misaligned but still in contact."

Gotta love Google.
