Interesting that everyone is so positive about Rumph.
I have a close friend who is a Niner fan, and to hear him talk about Rumph, he sounds like the 49er version of Taylor Jacobs.
High draftpick bust. His biggest problem at corner is that he's not quick...he's fast, but he doesn't change direction that well. Which is a pretty bad negative for a corner.
Maybe a change of scenery will help both of them.

People on this board are so positive because we got a talented player, injured or not, for someone who was on his way out regardless.
I think at this point, receiving ANY compensation for Jacobs outshadows the fact Rumph has only played 5 games the last two seasons.
Rumph, when healthy, is talented and can produce. But healthy is the keyword.

Rumph is coming off a injury that cost him most of the season. Having him listed as a starter would be like encluding Lavar Arrington in a LB rotation

I wouldn't worry too much about this. I think that this is more a result of the strenghts/weaknesses of Rumph and Harris. Nolan runs a defense that relies more on zone coverage, which is something that Harris is decent at while Rumph struggles with zones. As we saw the last two seasons, Harris is not capable of covering NFL receivers man-to-man, while man coverage is Rumph's strength. I think that Rumph will fit in quite well in GW's defense. He is big, physical, and does better in man coverage than in zone. Just the type of corner that GW likes.

Anyone who can play CB & hit like that has got to be decent at least. I think coming to a team that currently has 3 starters, a 2nd round draft pick and an undrafted rookie TE from Miami will make Rumph feel right at home. They will push him to be better, Sean Taylor will make him better or kick his arse. As for Jacobs, I rooted for him to make it but the injury bug got him. I'm just glad we got something for him. I know MR will be better than Kenny Wright. A big blitzing CB now we are talking!

I think coming to a team that currently has 3 starters, a 2nd round draft pick and an undrafted rookie TE from Miami will make Rumph feel right at home.
Very good point. Rumph, Taylor, and Portis were all at Miami in 2001 when the Canes won the National Championship. Moss and Rumph also played together at Miami for a few years. I have a feeling that being reunited with those guys will def help Rumph.

Maybe this says more about Nolan's ability to judge foorball talent than it does about Rumph's skills.

He is a good kid but he gets injured every time the wind blows. I agree that maybe a change of scenary will be good for him. I like Rumph a lot.
I'm also thinking if Saunders can beat Jacobs down the field (which we saw him do at Camp)...that's not a good sign.

Springs has his own injury concerns. He has played through soreness in his pelvic area, according to Gibbs. Team doctors are sending him to a specialist this week to determine if it's something more serious

Springs had that issue last year.
I know he played through it last year. Hopefully it's nothing serious but something they can figure out and fix before the season. If he plays like that with pain, imagine how he'd play without pain.

This is my perspective as a Niner fan. I'm not here to troll, just to offer a flip side to the coin.
Someone made the comment that Mike Rumph is the 49ers' version of Taylor Jacobs. This is sad, but true. Rumph was not expected to make the 53 man roster of the Niners, I hope that somewhat puts it in perspective for you guys. A couple of points....
-Saying he had a "solid year in 2003" is a bit of an exaggeration. Jim Mora, Jr. (our DC at the time) blitzed him quite a bit and used him effectively as a run stopper, even though he played CB at the time. If you guys use him in this way, you may have a modicum of success with Rumph, but he has ALWAYS struggled mightily in coverage, including 2003. This led to the Niners putting him at Safety once Nolan took over in 2005, but his inability to read the flow of the play from that spot (and blown coverages galore) led to ditching that idea about 4 games into the season.
-There is a tremendous symmetry to this deal.
Redskin Fan #1: "You should see what those idiot Niner fans are saying about Jacobs!!! They actually think he's a good receiver!!!
Niner Fan #1: "You should see what those idiot Redskin fans are saying about Rumph!!! They actually think he's a good defensive back!!! (that's how I found this forum....there's a thread on a Niner Board linking to this thread that's laughing at the reaction you guys are having to Rumph)
Redskin Fan #2: "Well, we traded someone that probably wasn't gonna make the team anyway, so anything we got for him is great."

One big difference......Gregg Williams
I understand that Gregg Williams is an excellent Defensive Co-ordinator, but so was Jim Mora, Jr. Perhaps not to the extent, but a very good DC nonetheless. That's the equivalent of me saying in regards to Jacobs...
