Niner Fan with Info on Rumph
Hi guys,
I'm a member of the 49erswebzone...I posted on your forum a few months ago regarding BLloyd and ACarter. Now I'm back with some info on Rumph and I would like to hear some unbiased info on TJacobs.
Rumph is a player I hate to see go. He's not a "me" guy, he's mature, he works hard, and he's tough. He was such a high draft pick with tons of potential but he just never panned out. In his rookie season he got burnt quite a bit but us Niner fans chalked it up to him being a rookie. We kept thinking he'd get better the next year but he kept looking like a rookie out there. His man to man skills were so bad that we tried moving him to free safety but he still played way out of position. In training camp this year Niner fans agreed that it looked as though Rumph was 6th on our depth chart and would most likely not make the team. This bothered the hell out of me. Another wasted high draft pick for the Niners.
So here's the good.
He's a hard working team oriented guy. But more importantly he brings a physical presence to any defense. He's a very hard hitter and sure tackler (although in our first pre-season game he missed four tackles). I loved him as our nickel back when we blitzed him. Very fast and could maneuver around blocks. So what you are getting is a tough, physical defender.
And now for the bad.
Consistently out of position. I don't know how/why some players understand a defense and others don't. Maybe Rumph wasn't coached properly or maybe he just can't understand defensive concepts. His man to man coverage skills are horrible...but he does play a zone a little bit better. The only way he can be good again is if he fits in the defensive scheme. If Washington plays a lot of zone coverage and it's not too complicated, Rumph will do good. If they ask him to play a lot of man to man, he will fall very far back on the depth chart and quite possibly be cut. Do not expect to get anything better than a nickel-back.
Now for TJacobs.
I know he's far from great and I don't expect much from him. Just wanted to know the positves and negatives on him. I'm hoping to get a quick, tough receiver. Doesn't have to stretch the field but would like to see him go over the middle. Maybe also a decent special teams player. Does he have any of these attributes?
Thanks for any info guys.

I can sum up his negatives for you in one word: INJURIES.
This kid has great speed and I suppose he could be a good WR someday, but I just don't see it. He gets hurt way too much, and the general consensus among Redskins fans is that he is soft. From what I hear, he is a very nice guy, he's just flat out not that good.
I think that both Jacobs and Rumph had worn out their welcomes with their respective teams. Let's hope they find they both excel in their new surroundings. They both have the talent, they just need to put it together on the football field.

Talor Jacobs is a very talented underachiever. He should have been an excellent fit in this offense, but, partly due to injury, just never caught on. It's possible that a change of scenery could be just the ticket for him... and, the Bay area certainly does have some scenery.
Regarding Rumph, and his coverage skills, I have to go back to what I remember of Mike Nolan... he plays a relatively conservative defensive scheme... and does not especially like to see man coverage. That would put a cover guy at a distinct disadvantage. If anyone can get the most from Rumph, I think it's Williams. With just a little luck, this becomes a win-win deal.

Taylor Jacobs won't be missed around here, most will wish him luck and all have seen the potential but it never showed on the field. Jacobs runs good routes, has great speed, but...
Coaches and teammates praise him but fans just waited. Most of us are shocked that we got anyone for him. I figured he'd get cut in a week or two.
A new start may be just what he needs but he will have to stay healthy and that's something that he hasn't done

Taylor Jacobs is one of those guys who looks great in practice but it never translates to the playing field.
The reason in my opinion is he's got no heart.
I think that was exemplified when he played for us at the end of last year. When Brunell threw a pass to him (forgot which game), the corner fought for it, Jacobs didn't. Jacobs showed no desire to come back and get the ball. Result was an INT.

Nice analysis on Rumph....appreciate you taking the time to fill us in.
Taylor Jacobs was a Spurrier pick and, while not necessarily a bad thing, it wasn't a great thing either. As noted, he just kept getting injured. Weird injuries too. I think one year it was internal bleeding or something...it's not like he keeps re-injuring his knees...it's all been freak stuff.
Having said that, I haven't seen much from him...BUT he was raved about by the players and Gibbs in last year's training camp...and everyone here was expecting big things from him....but, of course, he got hurt again and we didn't hear from him until the end of the season....and then it wasn't terribly impressive.
So, basically to sum up, what you get in Taylor Jacobs is: (1) Potential and (2) An injury risk.
I hope he pans out for you...as long as its when you're not playing us.

A "bruised pancreas" of all things. As wierd as it sounds, believe it or not, it is potentially life threatening. It was a really serious injury. The kind of injury that can steal some of your heart, and make you think a little too much... know what I mean?

Sadly for me, this is starting to seem more and more like an even swap. I'm still happy we got SOME sort of compensation for Jacobs, though.

We traded a plyer who would not have made our team for a player who might not have made theirs. What's to be sad about?

Rumph could be another Jacobs. Lots of potential but very injury prone.

We could have traded Jacobs for a PB&J sandwich. I know one of our linemen would have put that to good use.

Even is potential and risk, but Taylor was just taking up a spot and wasn't going to make the team. Rumph on the other hand will not be as far down the depth chart as Taylor was and could actually help the team.
If not G. Williams will cut him as opposed to A. Saunders cutting Taylor

On the positive side...look at the players that we have brought in that, at the time, were criticized for being injury "prone" -- off the top of my head Springs and Cornelius Griffin come to mind. Santana Moss (albeit on the other side of the ball), too. I'm sure I'm missing others, too. Granted those guys were all pro-bowl caliber players before arriving in DC, but Joe Gibbs made a living on his first tour of duty with the Redskins with the Plan B free agents. Looks like he's retained some of that midas touch. Hopefully, something will happen postively w/Rumph.

Which is why overall I AM happy with this trade.
Regardless of health, I am still happy that we got something for Jacobs. I'm going to watch Rumph closely when he gets to play this preseason. I hope he fulfills his potential here.

I am ecstatic about this trade. If you want to know about Jacobs. Here you go.
He was a 3rd to 4th round pick type reciever who we took in the second round because we had Spurrier. This guy has good actual ability but he can not get through an entire season. Maybe a new system and a new role will help him and I wish him the best but I dont think he will work out for the niners just like I didnt think he would work out for us.
I am very happy to see Rumph join us. He is a big physical DB with great upside. I think he will make a good nickelback maybe not this year but possibly next year.

Rumph? Wow. The blitz package just got a little better. He's not going to be the guy picking off a lot of balls, but he's awfully tenacious with tackling. Almost another Bowen...with the same injury issues, and less sure hands.
I'd forgotten all about Jacobs. I wrote him off two years ago as Spurrier's leftovers.

The reason Rumph's man to man skills were better in college was because he covered the #2 receiver. Rumphs teamate, Phillip Buchanon, covered the #1 receiver. When Rumph transitioned to the NFL he was asked to cover much better receivers and we all saw how that worked out. And his zone coverage remains the same...average at best.

Should've given us Lumsden instead
I'm also from the 49ers webzone...
You should've given us Lumsden instead. I mean, it's not like you guys are in need of RB depth or anything....lol
No but seriously, you guys have the best kept secret in the NFL. I was dying for the Niners to sign him.

If Rumph doesn't have great man to man skills then this division will eat his lunch and he'll not be back with the team next year, but from what I've seen (the clip of his hit on owens) he seems to be that tough Miami smashmouth kind of cat that I think GW can mold. Anythings better than what I saw sunday night.
Taylor Jacobs has potential but not toughness or tenacity. Both NFC must haves.

Re: Should've given us Lumsden instead
Thanks for the input RR.
Good to hear from someone who has seen a lot of Rumph.
I think I'm the biggest Jacobs supporter on this site.
I had the highest hopes for him, but knew deep down, he might not make this team.
So like others have said, this is a good trade for the Skins.
I think this is great for Jacobs.
I think he is going to put up nice #s for the 9ers.
I always thought he could be a solid number 2 guy.
If he can't do it with the 9ers, I'll finally give up on the guy.
Not going to happen my friend.
No matter how stupid this sounds to everyone; this guy is going to pass Betts.
If needs surgery, this is our guy.
No I'm not basing this off of BH's interview(which was really cool), or his praise.
I've done my own research on him, and formed an opinion on the guy awhile ago.
He is good.
All the good press he is getting just makes me think the Skins are not dumb enough to put him on the Practice Squad.
Sorry about going off topic. I just really like this guy.

No but seriously, you guys have the best kept secret in the NFL. I was dying for the Niners to sign him.
