Butler not coming

Rams Match Offer

Wow, I'm surprised they matched... little more cap money to play with... hmmm... and on the day John Lynch was released.... think the phones at Redskin park are busy right now?

Rather than wait the full seven days, the Rams decided Thursday to match offer sheets on restricted free agents Jerametrius Butler and Brandon Manumaleuna.

Butler, a cornerback, received a five-year, $16 million offer sheet -- including a $4 million signing bonus -- from the Washington Redskins last Friday night.

I wanted Butler to help out on our depth in the secondary but I wouldnt have liked giving up our draft pick for him. So this is a good thing I guess.

... if we had Lynch we certainly wouldn't draft Sean Yaylor with the #5 pick... we can deal down 5-10 spots and still get Udeze or Will Smith or one of the DTs and have another draft pick.

Lynch is 33....do you think he's got enough left to compromise losing Taylor?
God bless our troops and Joe Gibbs.

I'd rather have Taylor or Ohalete for that matter. Lynch is too old and will be too expensive. Give me a Taylor and Bowen combo. Though another draft pick would be nice....

Lynch sure gives you 2 or 3 years to find another safety, and that certainly means that Taylor, despite his prowess, CAN be overlooked.

He's going to be a great player, but if you have John Lynch, and you have the #5 pick and you still haven't addressed pass rush, then in my opinion it's smarter to trade down, take the extra pick, and draft a DE to fill our last need.

That's unbelievable. Lynch is one of the best in the game, he's forgotten more about playing safety than Iffy will ever know. Geez, you'd think that Redskins fans would know that since he pretty much single handedly beat us in a playoff game a couple of years ago.

The guy's been to 5 pro bowls. The closest Ohalate is going to get to a Pro Bowl is if he writes the word Pro on his cereal bowl.

Boss,
Is Lynch really a better option than what we had last year? Why not then keep Ohalete and Bowen and trade down and get a DE?

yes, I would like Lynch from 2-3 years ago, but I am talking about Lynch 2004. Not the same thing any more...agree?

No not at all. John Lynch 2004 is not John lynch 2002...true, but that's better than Ohalete 2004,2005,2006,2007,2008 could ever be.

They're just not even in the same league in my opinion.

Boss, how can you want a 33 year old who has declined in play over a young star who is the best player in the draft?

You and your Pro Bowl rosters! [-X

Look at the stats for the past two years for Lynch and Ohalete. Ohalete has an edge on him unless yo think Ohalete has empty stats.

and Jake,
I'm right there with you, after all of this I would still rather have Taylor.

Boss, I don't think we're talking about Lynch replacing Iffy, it's really a question of "would you take an aging Lynch over a young and very talented Taylor (who would replace Iffy)?"

I don't want him over a young stud in the draft... I want an upgrade at safety and the ability to still take a pass rusher wherever we want in the first round of the draft.

Big difference.

I have been talking about draftying taylor waaaaaaaay longer than most, check your own posts jake, but if you can get a John Lynch type upgrade at safety AND get pass rush, when it's looking like otherwise we won't be able to do both... then I'm all for it.

You guys point to the stats like they mean anything more than people were running right through our defensive line... please. Stats mean squat sometimes.

Ohalete doesn't even belong in the same sentence as john Lynch and only one of the Redskins' own would even think to do so.

And as I said jake... I have loved taylor from day one... I haven't hob knobbed back and forth from tommie harris to kevin jones and then on to the next flavor of the week.

We have one draft pick... we need a safety and a pass rusher. We can draft Taylor and fill one role, or we can sign lynch, draft Udeze, and fill them both. There isn't a free agent DE left of the caliber pass rush that you might hope to get out of Udeze.

This is largely BECAUSE it's lynch... if he goes elsewhere, i'll still want Taylor.

I'm upset that they matched. Butler was one of the guys I was getting excited about. We really need another decent corner (preferably very young) and he would be a great back-up and nickle back. Williams uses five defensive backs quite frequently. I particularly liked this move because it showed that we were going for depth and I honestly think it was worth the draft pick as he is young and yet can still start right away if necessary. I also think that getting Lynch is a bad idea unless he is REALLY cheap. I would be all for it without the cap but even though he is still a great player nobody knows how much he has left. Yes, Lynch is a big upgrade over what we have now but I don't know if it's worth it. Even then he is pure class and would be great to have around but I say stick with Bowen and Ohalete and get Taylor or even Deon Grant.
