Whispers: Lonie v. Frost

Post by riggofan »

Hope nobody posted this already from espn/pfw's whispers around the NFL:

Redskins sources believe that David Lonie, a 6-6 Australian punter, has a good chance to unseat incumbent Derrick Frost, who was the beneficiary of some kind rolls that boosted his net average to a fair 36.7 yards last season. Lonie has shown good boom and hang time in the offseason workouts.

6-6 Australian? Sounds like a beast.

Well, I hope the Aus wins the battle. Frost seemed to be one of our weaknesses last year, when the ball didn't bounce the right way. I'd love to have a long yardage punter.

Yeah, I was just watching a couple of the late season games from last year and was reminded of several VERY untimely shanks by Frost. He seemed to have a problem where he would all too often punt the ball straight out of bounds for about 10-15 yards total. I'd rather have Tupa back then to continue with an inconsistent punter like that.

Frost was downright embarrassing ... I'm rather surprised to still see him with the team. My vote is with the Aussie ... he can't be worse than Frost.

I think that Lonie also kicked off & even kicked some FG's. My understanding is that our coaches don't want Hall kicking off, & his range is down, so Lonie could fill multiple roles. I don't think Frost wants to KO.

We released him. As far as I know, he hasn't signed with anyone.

Not really much of a surprise.

Frost being replaced is something I've been hopiong for for a while. I don't think the staff would have signed Lonie if they didn't think he was a legit candidate to unseat Frost.

Go Lonie!

I don't hate Frost, but man did he give us some scares last season.

I just want someone who plays well.

Did we actually let Tupa go? I can't remeber. BRING HIM BACK!

One of the advantages that an Aussie Rules kicker would have is that they are not only able to punt the ball well under pressure but they would normally be a little more accurate and better able to kick the ball out of bounds inside the 20.
Until recently, Snyder & Allen have made a lot of really bad decisions - nobody with any sense believes this franchise will get better under their guidance
Snyder's W/L record = 45% (80-96) - Snyder/Allen = 41% (59-84-1)

The game of Aussie Rules is basically a kicking game and sometimes referred to as "aerial ping pong" or "aerial basketball". The ball is primarily advanced from one end to another by kicking - and kicking to both a player and over the goal posts requires accuracy and distance.

If he played Ozzie rules, he will come with the bonus that he doesn't mind getting dirty, likes vicious contact, and should be able to tackle...
