Mac Engel, of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram, reports Dallas Cowboys PK Mike Vanderjagt does not want to perform kickoffs. However, he added, "From an ego standpoint, I would rather do it than having some guy come in and say, 'Well, Vanderjagt can't do it so we have to bring in a guy.' Kickoffs are a no-win situation. It's a thankless job." He kicked off for special teams coach Bruce DeHaven last week and Dehaven told him, "It's doable." Vanderjagt sounded annoyed that Indianapolis Colts president Bill Polian labeled him incapable of kicking off a few years ago. Vanderjagt said, "Bill brought in a dozen guys that didn't kick off any better than I did. He just got in too deep and couldn't admit he was wrong."
How do you handle kickers that can't/don't kick off? Do you bring in another guy to handle this or do you bring in someone to compete against a guy that you just paid a bunch?

But if you have a kicker that isn't good at kickoffs do you bring in someone else or do you put it on the punt if the kicker is VERY good on FG and PAT?

If you have a kicker that isn't good at kickoffs, you cut him and bring in someone who is good at kickoffs and extra points and FGS.
There are tons and tons of kickers out there so it really shouldn't be too hard to find!

What do you do with a situation like the one brewing in Texas?
Mike Vanderjagt does not want to kickoff because he feels it's a "thankless job", and doesn't like/feel to comfortable doing it. He doesn't miss many FGs and IS capable of doing the job but not the best at it?

Well, I think you give him a slap, tell him to do what he's told, and then cut him. But then I don't care about the Cowboys' cap situation.
If he's not capable of kicking off effectively, then that's down to the people who signed him, but if he's just trying to pick and choose his duties, then throw him in the lake, and get somebody else in there.
Yeah, Vanderjagt is being a ninny, but I dunno that the case for place kickers shall handle kickoffs or else is as clear cut as that. Gary Anderson and Morten Andersen come to mind. Both played in the twilight of their careers when they no longer had the leg strength to kick off, and both were very valuable and valued because of their accuracy.
I think there's something to be said for the guy you know is going to make that clutch 35-yard FG in OT, even if he can't kick off anymore.
