Chris Cooley: H-Back v. Tight End

In Al Saunders' system, Chris ey will no longer be the H-Back for this team. This year, look for him to start playing the more traditional Tight End role.

My question is to those of you that are savy enough to fully know the differences between TE and H-Back.

How do you think this will effect ey's play and/or stats this year? Will Sellers become our H-Back? Maybe this will create an opening for Jesse Lumsden at H-Back?

Or, maybe there are no H-Backs in Al Saunders' system?

I dunno.

Just throwin' it out there for discussion.

I don't think it's going to have much of an effect on his stats. Saunders knows ey's a weapon and will try to work him into the offensive game plan, like Gonzalez in KC. ey should have another great year.

As the season progressed last year, ey played more and more in a pure tight end role. He's better lining up at TE because he isn't the best open field blocker. I don't see much changing, he will primarily do the same things he did last year.

As for Sellers, he played more of a pure H-Back role last year. He is great lining up in the backfield as a lead blocker or lining up on the end of the line at TE. I think he will move to FB because of his blocking prowess.

I don't think Saunders uses an H-back. Sellers will play FB along with Cartwright. Lumsden will compete with Broughten & White for the last RB/FB slot.

Whether he is a h-back or TE, his production will drop this year. He is no longer the second recieving option on offense. I am sure he will be used in the red zone effectively, but his total receptions will drop. Just my

It might not hurt his production so much. We'll see more single coverage by a LB.

very well said. personally I think he's gonna get mroe reception yards and a play a bigger role in our offense... even with more WR's on the squad. He's got to much talent not to.

"I think a big misconception last year was that everyone thought I wasn't a tight end, but that's basically what I was last year," he said. "The 'H' is just what it was termed."

To hear ey tell it, the position change is not really a change at all.

He says the only significant change is one letter: ey is now a "Y" in offensive sets instead of an "H." The "Y" is often used as a standard description for tight ends in play formations.

i seem to remember that ey was the #1 TE (yards or receptions) coming out of college. I would expect that we will see improvement in every facet and that ey will continue to get the opportunities he deserves. This guy has only gotten better and I think he will really grow with Saunders schemes.

Quick thoughts:

ey dissapeared in games, starting with Philly. Why?

1. Teams finally figured out we only had one WR?
2. The running game stalling, due to lack of respect for the passing game?
3. Santana being tripled?
4. Was he still being covered by LB's?
5. Playcalling? < I doubt

Seeing him taken out those games had a visible effect on him. I remeber instances of him throwing fits on the sideline.

He and Santanna were our only passing options at the end of last season. Teams knew this, and keyed on him. His stats will actually go up this season under Saunders. He may have less receptions, but the ones he does have will be for more yardage, TDs, and critical first downs.
