Mike Triplett, of the New Orleans Times-Picayune, reports the NFL's competition committee discussed a possible rule change regarding uniform numbers during a conference call Friday, May 12, and will report on the issue to all 32 teams during the league meetings later this month, according to NFL spokesman Greg Aiello. New Orleans Saints RB Reggie Bush has asked for permission to wear his college No. 5, but running backs are restricted to numbers in the 20s, 30s or 40s. Two-thirds of the NFL's 32 owners would need to approve in order for the rule to be changed.
The league will rule on this request next week. Would you vote to change the rule? What limitations would you lift (could a QB wear a number in the 20s?).
I don't think the rule has been a issue so far, and see no reason to fix something that's not broke

It is going to be a very lonely 1 lost in the in the middle of that jersey.
It is already tough enough for the fans to follow the names and numbers as it is. If it ain't broke don't fix it. I voted no. It is time Reggie gets used to somebody saying no anyway (after the Texans ).

I, for one, could care less what number a player wears. For example, I wouldn't care of Marcus Washington wore 81! It's about the player, not the number.

-From this point on, any incomming player to a team may wear any number 1-99 regardless of position.
-However, if a player is already under contract with a team, say Clinton Portis of the Washington Redskins, he cannot change his number (so all the guys with CP 26 Jerseys don't get screwed, however knowing the NFL they'd probably do the exact opposite just so they could make more $$$)

Maybe if they have a decent sized percentage of their jersey sales go towards cancer research of under privileged children. It'd have to be a portion of their cut for their jersey sales.

Not 81!!! Are you kidding? 81 should be considered among some of the sacred numbers in Redskins history!

OK then.

Well, not that number. Of course I wouldn't advocate anyone wearing that number. I was just throwing it out there to make a point.
Whoa there Justice. Put the keyboard down, and back away from the desk with your hands above your head. Of all the numbers in the world to "throw out there". I can feel RiC's rage from this side of the Atlantic, and it could get ugly.
There is a rule system in place. If he wants to go outside of the rule, that's fine. Just pay the fine like everyone else who wants to do something outside the scope of the rules. Sean Taylor paid for wearing his striped socks, let Bush pay for wearing number 5.

I agree with JF, don't change the rules, but charge the player.
In additione, since Reggie is trying to provide relief help for the area through the jersey sales, perhaps the NFL could also donate part (or all) of the fines paid by Bush to Katrina relief efforts.
This could be a win-win for both parties, without the NFL making an "exception" that would undermine its long-standing rules.
It wasn't a very good news day on any front for Saints tailback Reggie Bush. Bush was scheduled to undergo an MRI on his strained left hamstring late Monday afternoon to rule out a possible tear.
And his marketing representative, Mike Ornstein, said it's appearing more unlikely Bush will be wearing his customary No. 5 this season, though it's possible the rule barring running backs from wearing single-digit numbers could be changed in time for the 2007 season.
I remember when guys could wear any number. I think they changed the rules to make it easier for the ref's to tell when a player is out of position. Since I don't want the officiating to get even worse, I'll have to vote no.

he's not going to wear it yet--just for that photo shoot for the rooks...
i really hope they just screw the rule and let players wear what they want to wear. some of them have their superstitions, and superstitions are a huge part of sports. if reggie wants to wear 5, let him wear 5. if he wants to wear 99, let him do that. let anyone wear waht they want. its not that big a deal IMO, and they'll move a lot of #5 reggie bush jerseys, especially after all this commotion.
Sean, may you always rest in peace and look down on us with the same love that we look up to you.
Ornstein originally said that Bush would donate 25 percent of all the royalties he received from jersey sales toward Hurricane Katrina charities if the league granted him the right to wear No. 5. But Ornstein said that Bush has now agreed to make the donation no matter what number he wears.
Not too mention, he already donated $50,000 to a school in New Orleans which was in danger of closing.
Reggie Bush is a prime example fo what a sports Role Model should be.

Donating money is great and all, but why is there so much publicity about it for Bush?
Well yeah other athlete's donate money too, sure, but Bush is just a rookie comming into a devastated New Orleans and he has already donated 50 Grand to keep a school open and has agreed to donate some of his jersey money to the Katrina Relief Fund. Not to mention the fact that he alone has practically lifted the spirits of New Orleans.
Basically he could have just been thrown into a rough situation and just pulled a T.O. and isolated himself from society, however he has already significantly improved the New Orleans area.

As a soccer fan, I must say that I like the fact that you can look at an NFL player's number, and have some idea what position he plays. In times past, a soccer fan would know who a player was simply from his shirt number (they didn't always have the player's name on them), and it was simple to know that if you saw #3 on the right hand side of the opponents' penalty box, then your left back must have gone wondering out of position. Nowadays, in a team of 11 players, you might have #37 at left back, #84 in the old #9's position, and a #17 in goal. It's just silly.

Another thing Bush could borrow from football players is the whole 2-digit-number-that-adds-up-to-a-single-digit, i.e. "23" 2+3= 5.
Bush could learn something from those footballers overseas.
