Well, I think he's sat on the bench in Kansas because of Trent Green, which I don't think you can hold against him. You didn't criticise Steve Young for being on the bench behind Joe Montana, did you? (And no, I am not seriously comparing Green and Collins to Montana and Young in terms of quality).

As for playing in Buffalo, I'd ignore his first two years, because he was learning the offence (there's that pesky requirement to learn the offence again). In his third year, when he started 13 games, he had a QB rating of 69.5, with 55% completion rate, 12 TD's and 13 INT's. Not something to write home about, I'll grant you.

Compare to Patrick Ramsey's third year - he started seven games and had a rating of 74.8.

Just for the hell of it, we'll look at Trent Dilfer's third year - 16 starts for a rating of 64.8.

Vinny Testaverde's third year? 14 starts for a rating of 68.9.

Steve McNair? 16 starts for 70.4.

Jake Plummer? 11 starts for 50.8.

So, OK, Collins is no Manning, Roethlisberger or Favre, but he matches up well enough with some quarterbacks who have actually done something in this league, as well as the departed Patrick Ramsey. Would you balk at having any of the above QB's as the Redskins' clipboard holder this year? I sincerely hope Collins is dead weight on the roster this year, because I always hope that the third QB is dead weight - I never ever want to see him on the field for the Redskins, but that's because I'm excited about our prospects with both Brunell and Campbell this year. I'm not losing any sleep about Collins though - if we have anything to worry about, it's Brunell and Campbell having to learn a new offence, and what better help for them to do that than to have a third QB who actually knows the system, and has seen it operate while standing in the pocket? My 2 cents

So many other qbs were available when we signed Collins that have much more potential to help the team on field. IMO we would have been better off signing any number of QBs who could adapt to/learn the Al Saunders system in a few months and preform better than Todd Collins even though he has been in the system for years.

Spurrior used the same "knows the system" cra*p line of logic when he brought in former Gators like Danny Weurfell and Shane Mathews who were fricken terrible QBs just like Todd.

Because IMO he cannot contribute at his position I consider him deadweight and therefore the least valuable/worst player on our roster.

You bring in a new OC, now both the starter and #2 have to learn a new system (though not really that different) and you don't have a problem bring in someone (you consider dead weight from day 1) that will need to learn the same system and take away from the top two reps.

Having a #3 that knows the system will allow for more hands on for #1 and #2 plus Collins will be able to help them with the odds and ins of the scheme... Dead weight would be able to do that

On the field??? I don't know if you understand this, but normally a team's 3rd String QB never even sees the field. In other words, if your 3rd String QB is on the field then you are screwed anyways.

IMO we would have been better off signing any number of QBs who could adapt to/learn the Al Saunders system

Why would we do that when Todd Collins already knows the system. See, his contribution to the Redskins is not to play, but to be a teacher to the #1 and #2 QB's of the team and to help them learn the system.

Because IMO he cannot contribute at his position I consider him deadweight and therefore the least valuable/worst player on our roster.

Hello, Todd Colins is going to contribute more to this team than almost anyone and he won't even take 1 snap the whole year.

Put it this way, Joe Gibbs doesn't line up at TE out there, but does that mean he is deadweight because he can't contribute on the field... HELL NO. Todd Collins is not going to play this year, he's going to coach.

Exactly! Do a little Google work and I'm sure you can find Gibbs saying this very thing.

Here is a quotation from a recent article:

Saunders said the repeated coaching changes Campbell has endured have deprived him of developing "a real solid base with which to work from in a fundamental and technique standpoint." He must smooth those rough edges while also trying to digest the team's expansive playbook.

"The quarterbacks that have played in this system have had a very high football aptitude," Saunders said. "They have to be bright guys with a great ability to retain and gather information, because this offense builds and builds and builds, and part of the success we've had on offense is the versatility and volume we have. We go into a game with 250, 300 plays, and that changes every single week and multiplies itself through the course of a year. It's a lot of timing. It's rhythm. The game is played at a very, very, fast, upbeat tempo, and all of those things begin with the quarterback."

Brunell, 35, is adjusting as well, but he has 147 games of regular season experience and deep knowledge to draw from. Collins, 34, is a Saunders favorite even though he has made just 17 starts since 1995. "Todd is as good a technician as there is in this passing game," Saunders said. "He just hasn't had a chance to play because [Chiefs Pro Bowl starter] Trent [Green] was always healthy."

Collins and Campbell are paired together in drills -- they are right-handed while Brunell is a lefty -- so Campbell can learn from the veteran. Campbell also can turn to Collins with questions about the offense, and about the preparation necessary to be a No. 2 quarterback. Should Campbell get a chance to play this season, he said he aims to make the most of it. The results may be slow to come at first, he said, but over time -- and with the luxury of continuity in one offense -- Campbell is confident that he will succeed.
