Who's the better pass blocker?
The reason I ask is now the RT is protecting the blindside (assuming lefthander Brunell starts).

I don't see them switching sides. You would have two guys playing out of their natural position. It would create problems. Jansen can handle protecting the blind side. Remember, Tony Boselli still played the left side in Jax.
What would they do if PRam came in...switch back during the game? That won't happen.

Jansen is hands down, he has never had a season like Chris did last year and he goes up twice a year against Strahan. To me Chris has never played up to his salary. I also believe, Jon is the better run blocker.
SORRY JAKE, dont want to have you go ballistic, imo.

They won't have to switch sides, they play the against the same lineman no matter if the QB is a righty or a lefty.
Jansen brings dedication and hard work to every game. I like Samuels but it seems to me that he hasn't played (as hard?) or as well as Jansen. It could be the injuries, though.

I agree that Samuels hasn't played as well as he's capable of the last two seasons.
I also agree that Jansen is a stalwart.
But, I think the Strahan argument is a bit false because Strahan has SCHOOLED Jansen a couple of times like the first match-up of 2002 when Strahan had 2 sacks, and probably could have had 4.
I'm surprised nobody's even mentioned the fact that Sammy goes against the best ends in the game at his position... Jansen doesn't (with the exception of Strahan). The RDE is almost always the stronger of the two. It's near impossible to compare the two players for that reason alone in my opinion.

Sean Taylor was one of a kind, may he rest in peace.

Yeah Boss but Jansen has played in a collegiate offense for the past two seasons and with Schotty as coach everyone knew that Stephen was the key to the offense. I think Jon has played beyond his current salary. Did anyone see how he buried that Dallas Db in the second game against Dallas?? I loved it!!!

Being that we've been publishing articles for a year about how poor Spurrier's protection schemes were, you're certainly not getting any arguments there.
Not sure I understand the Schotty bit though... yeah, we ran Stephen a lot... you think a right tackle likes anything better than going ahead run blocking for a stud back? I don't see what it has to do with pass protection from jansen other than reiterating that it just isn't something he's had to do a ton of.

I'm not trying to take anything away from JJ... at all. just saying it's not really a fair comparison when Samuels faces much tougher competition week in and week out. Samuels is my favorite player (this is theHogs.net) but i fully admit that he has not played that well lately and I am most certainly not trying to say that Jansen DIDN'T play better than Samuels over that span. Jansen would probably be my second favorite Redskin though, so I love both these guys.
But the thread topic was who is the better pass protector and I think the fact that JJ has always been primarily a run blocker since he plays on the strong-side, and that Chris goes against the best d-lineman in the game, means that the results of this poll are more of a popularity contest because it's just not a question you can even think about answering until Jansen puts in time as the blind-side protector and see how he does.
Do I think JJ will do well?
Joe 'Freakin' Bugel is back man, they're all gonna have the best season of their careers... don't kid yourselves.
Oh and incidentally, when JJ re-signed in 2002, he was compensated more than accordingly. While not a big contract for left tackles, his 6-year $25 million deal made him one of the best paid right tackles in the league. It may be a little low now with escalating salaries, but he is a cap hit of almost 6 mil the next 4 years. Not exactly chump change.

I know pass blocking is the sexy thing for the fans because it usaully results in the big play, but ask any lineman what he loves to do? They love to run block and they get off on it because they can attack the defense lineman instead of contain them. With Gibbs run-focused offence - and Bugel actually coaching the line - I see a big turn around in 2004.
I like the arguement by Bosshog. I do like Janson better because he seems to bring a dedication to the craft of offensive lineman, but it's unfair to judge the two against the other. That poll right now is more of a popularity contest. I do think we have two of the best bookends of the game and with Joe Bugel our line will be awesome.

I think we all know who I voted for. I like both of them and think that JJ and CS are very close to being equal but as you all know, I am biased.
I think if MB is the starter, this will be the telling year to see how blessed Jansen is to being the blind side blocker. I like both of these guys but my vote is with C-Sam. Since he won't have to be the blind side blocker anymore, I think he will improve A LOT from last year's bad play. You have to understand, his bad play wasn't really from letting rushers get by, it was holdings and false starts. He will get better.
