While I also understand what you are saying in that Campbell needs time to get used to being a "starter" in the NFL that may be true with certain coaches but not to the best coach in the NFL right now. He wants all his players to be ready to be able to play and contribute.
One of the reasons that Gibbs is not high on draft picks is it takes tiime for even the most talented to adjust to the NFL and Gibbs does not like players learning on the field. He will take less talent in a NFL player over an unproven college superstar every time.
Taylor is great - did not start regularly for this coach!
Campbell must be progressing and we will see proof of that soon enough - patience.

Until recently, Snyder & Allen have made a lot of really bad decisions - nobody with any sense believes this franchise will get better under their guidance
Snyder's W/L record = 45% (80-96) - Snyder/Allen = 41% (59-84-1)

I see bashing of the ONLY and i will peat and repeat...the ONLY qb in the last 6 yrs. to take us to the playoffs. Get off his jock strap. Those bombs he made in the first Dallas game not only showed his ARM but his HEART against one of our biggest rivalries. I will forever remember that game and what he did and so too will you when they replay over and over again. Thxs Mark. What he did last year should automatically in my mind guarantee his start this year. I guess some folks forgot the UGLY years.

Tom Brady won a Super Bowl in his first year as a starter (and second year in the NFL). Rothlisberger also won a ring in his second year, although he also got significant playing time in his rookie year as well. Unless JC turns out to be a total bust (which I doubt), I think there's more than enough talent on this team to cover for whatever beginner mistakes JC makes early in the season if he were the starter, and he'd be sufficiently seasoned by the playoffs to carry this team.
Edit: The real reason most rookie QBs struggle is because the worst teams get to draft them, and they've got no help. See David Carr in Houston, Alex Smith in San Fran, Joey Harrington in Detroit, Josh McNown in Arizona, etc. Few good teams need to start a rookie QB right away, so we rarely get to see how a rookie QB does when he's not forced to carry the team. But like in Big Ben's case, when he's got help, they do alright. What was he, 15-1 as a starter? Can't complain about that.

The gentleman was right, this is a hot button topic. I have read all of the posts and did not see anyone that matches my opinion so I will add my 2 cents worth. One needs to look at Joe Gibbs history. You will never see a Peyton Manning type quarterback in Joe Gibbs offense. In his first tenure and in this one also, Gibbs looks for a certain type of player. One that will execute and play to win for the team. Look at Moss and Portis, breakout seasons but still team first players. The day they change is the day they will become expendable, i.e. LaVar (not meaning anything bad about LaVar either). This is the first year in many that I actually feel that the Redskins have a reasonable shot at the Super Bowl, with a little luck. I am not going over board with my team spirit but am realistally looking at the acqusitions. I don't think it matters whether the quarterback is Brunell or Campbell. Joe Gibbs will make the decision when it becomes necessary.
gibbs will start brunell because he wants to minimize turnovers. if you think gibbs is going to start an unknown quantity when he already has a vet he trusts you dont know how gibbs works.
we are all excited to see JC get going but until brunell is proven to be ineffective or until he gets injured it wont happen. sorry folks but thats how gibbs rolls
also, i agree with this being the first year in many that the skins have a chance at a superbowl. cant wait for this to get underway!
hail to the redskins ...gibbs for life

Good point UK Fan! Gibbs also will never refer to a QB as a 15-1 QB or a 1-15 QB because the wins and losses are team numbers. That might apply on a team with a star QB or a star WR but here it is all about the team.
If we do well here this year (and I know we will win the NFC East) it will be because we played well as a team not that we had a great D or a great Teams effort but because our team played to their abilities, collectively.

I still don't know what your point is.
Campbell is going to get every opportuntity to prove he is the starter... just remember... in Gibbs' mind, all ties go to the veteran. That's got to be good enough.
Gotta be patient. I think that Gibbs may well believe that Jason Campbell has the greatest upside of any quarterback he has worked with since Dan Fouts. He will get his shot.
I hear what your saying . MY point for the 5th time is that , if campbell is the guy start him now, we traded like 5 picks and a first in 2006 if he is the guy start him. Let him get his feet wet then in 2007 we a better qb that can lead us to the Superbowl i think campbell by then with playing time vs life nfl defenses wil be ready.
sitting on the bench is not helping .
Brunell is old ,slow, gets hurt every time, and i dont belive brunell will start all 16 games .
i also feel Brunell missed wide open passes to Santana Moss alot last year, Moss should have had more catches and more yards and TDs.
i just feel Brunell is not on par with the Carson Palmers, peyton mannings, etc brunell will not lead this team any where he is just TOO OLD , HOW MANY TIMES CAN I SAY IT BRUNELL IS TOO OLD, ONE MORE TIME, BRUNELL IS TOOO OLD .
HE IS NOT LASTING 16 GAMES AND PLAYOFFS
You should do your homework before making a comment. We only gave up a 3rd last year and a 4th this year for Campbell. We just flipped this year's 1st for last year's first.
Taylor and Landry will take no Prisoners!! - I just can't bring myself to delete it!
I made this call a month ago.
Campbell will be the starter.
It feels like this topic has gone longer than a month. It feels more like two years that we've argued for Anybody But Brunell (ABB).

From watching Gibbs, and we have a lot of history for guidance, we should know that Campbell will not start until Gibbs thinks he's ready. Maybe Brunell will break a leg or have an emergency appendectomy, and maybe the new backup falls down every time he takes a snap, but otherwise we can predict that Campbell will practice and learn a while.

True

Compared to who, Mike Vick? Brunell is a better scrambler even at this age than a Drew Bledsoe or even Patrick Ramsey.

False. Brunell took a lot of hits this season and he held up. It wasn't until his knee got twisted that his throwing suffered. Im sorry but there is NOTHING you can say that would make me believe that Jason, Patrick, or John Elway could have their knees twisted by a 300lb man like that and come away unscathed.
Baltimores QB suffered a toe injury and it sidelined him because even a toe injury can hamper your throwing mechanics.

#2 in the NFC wasn't enough for you? What will it take to please some of you?

Too old to do what?
Too old to hardly throw any interceptions?
Too old to help Moss breathe life into a stale career?
Too old to lead the offense to its 1st playoff appearanc in 6+ years?
Too old to scramble for key 1st downs in more than one game? (SEA to mention one)
We dont need a Peyton Manning, or a Carson Palmer on this team. Trent Dilfer will never be mentioned in the same breath as Peyton Manning but what does Trent have? Trent has a SB ring. We dont need a one man show, we dont need ONE PERSON to win it all, we need a finely tuned machine and thats what we have.

Well Im glad that you'll be the 1st one to boast and puff out your chest if that happens. He gives us our best chance to win right now.
There were people BEGGING for Heath Shuler to start.....
We see what Patrick was put through....
Gus Ferrotte ring a bell?
We have a legendary coach who is the ONLY person to win RINGS with multiple QB's and you guys come on here and doubt him...

Can't wait until we get started again. Anyway, Campbell certainly has got a great set of mentors. Would I hand him the keys to the car just yet ? Nah.

look , i want to be positive and be a good Redskins fan and all that , but i just dont see Mark Brunell lasting 16 games. sorrry dont see it happening . Thomas is not even 70% back from his broken leg . We want to open up the offense and have a Colts , rams like offense with all this wheapons. having brunell with all this wheapons is like going to the prom with your mom or something its a waste . If i were Joe Gibbs, i start Jason Campbell let him get used to the wr,s and Te and cooley and portis . ANd give the guy the keys to the bentley and see how far he can take us.
To realy think Brunell can take us to a superbowl is board line insane. We got to the Playoffs right then what happened, Brunell passed for 25 yards vs the Bucs 25 people.

25 yards, if not for the defense and Taylor and lavar we dont win that game
we go to settle and Brunell is missing Moss wide open., throwing passes all over the place . Brunells best throw to Moss is the wr bubble screen because he only has to throw it like 2 yards to moss .
Campbell is young but he is ready he has had his time on the bench in 2005 and learned and got better, and studed hard, Gibbs called him a very hard worker and he quick sharp and loves to learn.
I feel personaly Campbell would lead this team to the playoff this year in his first year, then in 2007 when he is settled down and all that SUPERBOWL.
brunell is noit leading this team any were, WHY ? first he wil lnot stay health do you guys know what teams we are playiung this year, colts, falcons, gaints, bucs, eagles, texans, panthers, all have great d lines, Brunell wil not make it,
Thats why the Second year guy will and should start,
GIBBS IF YOU ARE LISTENING START CAMPBELL GO WITH YUR GUT INSTICTS

Hey, that's what the off-season's for, man!! Stirring up a QB controversy is just a way to kill time until the season starts, especially since we can't beat the "who should the 'skins take with their first round pick" topic to death! It's all in good fun!

And you want Campbell to drive the Bentley through this "neighborhood" of defenses? Get real...Let Brunell drive the Olds 98 (geezer reference), get a few more dents, and then he can drive you and Portis to the prom with your Moms...
I'm just stirrin' the pot and living in the '70s.

And neither you nor I know with any degree of certainty whether Brunell or Campbell is the right choice for US right now. But there's only one way to find out . . .

Has anyone on this board seen Campbell do anything yet? I know the tiny bit a preseason action he saw last year wasn't enough to give me any idea what his skill level is right now. I think he is a complete question mark and we all are trusting Joe and Al Saunders to develop him. So how could anyone say he's ready to start this year?

I'm kind of looking forward to the inevitable choice here between the leadership of Brunell over the skills of Campbell. Eventually that's what we will see this season. I am very confident in the overall defensive scheme with Williams and the offensive game plan with Saunders and I think at some time Gibbs is going to decide that he thinks Campbell gives him a better chance to win and will make the switch.
We are going to be a better team this year than last and we are going to win the NFC East. We have improved so much in the last 3 years and this year should show that we are here to stay.
