Ebay Knuckleheads

So, I recently purchase a Harley Owner's ring (still waiting for it.) They're kinda cool...kinda like a college ring. Made by the same company.

Because of that, I decided to sell this sterling silver 100th Anniversary Harley ring I bought a few months back on Ebay for around $30.00. I listed it on Ebay for $20.00.

The final bid is in: $250.00!!!

I send an e-mail to the guy asking why in the heck he would be bidding $250.00 for a ring worth a maximum of $30.00.

His reply:

Hi, i just really wanted it and someone else was bidding against me all the way to the end of the aution. What do you feel would be a good price, im willing to pay a reasonable price. I was wondering how much they were worth but i didnt have time to find out before the end of the auction. please let me know.

There is no way I feel comfortable selling this ring for $250.00 so I contacted Ebay so I can try to get my seller's fees adjusted, allowing me to give it to the guy for $40.00 (which includes shipping).

Yes, I could be an ass and demand the $250.00, but there is no way I'm gonna do that. What the heck, man?!?!?!?!?!?!

I'm not a common seller on Ebay (having sold about 5 things total) so I don't know the "perks" of "buy it now" versus having people bid up the price. I suppose I could always make the "buy it now" price higher than I expected to see if anyone "bites".

Something to consider for the future, to be sure.

It isn't fair to the guy who bid out and lost on ebay to now sell it for $40 is it? Just a thought. To be honest... the ebay guy deserves to pay $250... if he got it for $40... he should still owe $210 for a 'stupid tax'. :wink:

Take the $250 and donate $200 to charity. That way something good comes of someone else's stupidity...

One good thing I did on Ebay recently:

I purchased my RED PARKING PASS from a broker about 45 days ago for $575.00. When I upgraded my tickets, I got PURPLE PARKING PASSES.

So, I put the Red Parking Passes on Ebay.

Although I bought them for $575, I initially listed them at $350.00 because I, for one, hate the idea of people gouging prices. The passes were bid up and I actually got $581.00 for them so I suppose all worked out well there.

Well, I just sent a fee-payment dispute into Ebay telling them that the buyer and I have agreed to cancel the sale. I had to pay a fee for the $250.00 sale so now I'm just working on getting it credited back.

What a pain.

Now, I'm just waiting for Ebay to refund the original seller's fees.

That's Ebay's freakin' rules. They charge the seller seller's fee whether or not the buyer actually buys the item. What a crock!

I'm just an Ebay lemming, a follower. Whatever rule Ebay tells me to follow, I just go with the flow.

This is one crazy sale. JH, you could be the most honest guy on ebay. This is the type of story that makes USA Today on page A21 in the bottom corner. Good for you, but I would have taken the fools money!!

Please don't take offense to this... I mean none... but how is offering it up to the guy who lost the auction fair? Why shouldn't the guy who WON the auction get to buy it for $40 now?

From his standpoint... he did NOTHING wrong but try and win an auction that he wanted. We may see it as 'stupid' for drasticallly overpaying but I don't see how it's fair to reward the guy who DIDN'T win the auction.

Tell you what... I'll give you $40 for the ring... take the guy's $250... and buy guy number two a ring as well!

I got your point, Boss. I sorta blew off the guy who bid $250.00 because I just felt he deserved to get blown off. Those rings always come up on Ebay, I told him via email, so he'll certainly find another one within a week.

As for the donation, we've discussed this before in PMs, I'll certainly be donating in the future. I feel no obligation. I've NEVER felt any obligation. I just appreciate the work done here so if I wanna throw $100 your way, I'm gonna throw $100 your way.

So there....now if I can only find that PAY PAL button.

Not if he WON the bid. It defeats the purpose of bidding if the seller won't let you have the item.

It also defeats the purpose of bidding when the bidder makes an uninformed bid on an item and ends up having to pay 10x the value of the item.

Again, I was just trying to help the guy avoid making a $210.00 mistake.

Boss makes a valid point in that perhaps I should have offered the discount to the guy who won the auction rather than to someone else. I just chose not to, mistake or not.

Again, you should also understand that you'll ALWAYS be able to find this type of ring on Ebay.
