Now I am still happy that we used "this year's" first rounder to get our QB of the future, but if Kiwi or Hagan fall to us (and yes I know this is just a Mock Draft...) then I would be sad. But since this is just an early MOCK Draft...

Wow! 5 USC players in the first round. A bunch of ppl here keep mentioning Hester and Moss from the U and that they will be way gone, before our pick. Kiper doesn't even have them going 1st round, so maybe we'll have a crack at'em. I know Hester is going pro, not sure on Moss though.

From a personnel standpoint the Niners probably deserve to be choosing higher in the draft than this, but late season wins over St. Louis and Houston ended any hope they might have had of bringing in Reggie Bush to team with his old high school teammate Alex Smith so they look elsewhere. There is little doubt that Mario Williams is the best player still on the board and he would provide the Niners with the impact pass rusher they are currently lacking. Physically Williams has everything you look for in a premier defensive end and he might very well be the best prospect to come along at the position since Julius Peppers. He is still a little inconsistent but when his motor is running he can be unblockable and a true difference maker on the defensive side of the ball.

The scariest part is he runs a 4.33 40 yard dash. All you Maryland fans know who he is and yets his counterpart Manny Lawson is projected to the 2nd round. If he were to fall to # 52 or whatever, I hope we pick him. He's electric.

^^I hope your saying Lawson runs the 4.33 because theres no possible way in hell that the 6-7, 290 pound Williams can run that. Lawson however is much quicker off the edge and will probably be used as a pure pass rusher in the pros but his frame will probably allow him to develop into an every down DE. Regardless I think Lawson would be a great pick for us in the 2nd round although I think if WR isn't addressed in free agency we should look there first.

I agree with u there Redskins4Life. I been saying his name to my friends all year, because I heard (never seen him play) that he is fast and is tall,simular to kearse he has the frame to get bigger, with quickness and speed we need a Pass rusher who can get up field and push the QB up into the pocket for griffin and salava.

I want us to get Jason Avant from Michigan if he's there with our 2nd rounder. He's not the fastest, but he's got size and I think he would be a great pick-up.

Honestly I think it makes more sense than Mel Kipers, especially our picks.

Then in the 5th Round he has us getting that S from Penn St. and I've liked that guy for a while now.

I hope they are right and a LB all ready on the team can step up to play WLB.

He has us taking Roger (Rocky) McIntosh at 53-- OLB from Miami. (Thomas Howard is going 3 picks later -- I'm thinking Howard may end up being a better choice.) Even though....I'd rather see us take an OL at 53 for depth. I really fear one of our starters getting hurt and no one able to step in to protect Brunnel.

Rocky is 6'3" 235. I found that he ran a 4.63 40. Anyone know how he did at the Combine?

Here's one guy's assessment of Rocky from a draft site I use. Take it with a grain of salt:

Pros -- Fast, tenacious, smart, athletic, and solid tackling LB. Tall and can play Inside or Outside in most systems. The kid also has some of the better hands at LB in the draft.

Cons -- Lack of PT, over commits on plays, needs to get stronger, has problems shedding blocks of linemen.

Overall -- With the recent success of "U" LBs in the draft since Ray Lewis, Rocky McIntosh will likely be pretty high on peoples boards. He is a 2nd-4th round pick, that increased his status in the East/West Shrine game. He plays very similar to Jonathan Vilma and will likely make the switch to MLB in the Pros, that also means he will need to get much stronger and work on shedding blocks which are his two major problems. With his sideline to sideline playmaking ability he will be a solid starter in the NFL for years. He is very similar to Will Witherspoon when he was coming into the draft.

But Thomas Howard is pretty intriguing too. He's kind of like LaVar (a crazy athlete) but I think by being set up in GW system at the beggining of his career he would be much more disciplined than LaVar.

But maybe the coaching staff will overlook him just for that becasue they have already had enough with LaVar type players. (except Sean )

I don't think this staff will overlook any player. They have made all the right moves to win the next three years. Players come players go but I bet bith LaVar & the Skins wish it would have worked out. My LaVar jersey is now in the closet with Davis, Bailey, and Smoot.

There's a lot of debate that goes on about best player available versus drafting for need. With the cap and with our situation, I'd go for need and take OL, CB, S, OLB...I don't think we need another DE.

Doesn't have great lower body strength and isn't a powerful bull rusher capable of collapsing the pocket. Needs to work on technique as both a pass rusher and run defender. Knee injury in 2005 was a fluke but creates minor durability concerns moving forward.

Mel Kiper has him listed as the 5th DE to be drafted with Manny Lawson moving up fast (1 reason MK is dropping)

Drafting for need limits your choices but allows for more complete research on a player prior to the draft. Drafting the best player available adds another potential playmaker but may leave a hole somewhere else on the roster. Every team has it's own theory, not sure what Gibbs will do.
IMHO it's a crap-shoot when it comes to the draft
As far as the impact on the cap goes the #53rd pick MAY have a cap number that breaks the top 51 but no pick below that will, so the rookies won't have much impact on the Cap

I wasn't clear when I said, "with the cap and our situation" -- I meant that we're assembling a team to win now. We don't value the draft like many other tams -- if we need or want something we go out and (over)spend for it. In the olden days of no free agency and no cap, getting the best player available was a must in the long term.

I don't remember if he demanded an apology for picking Faulk. But I do remember him questioning the selection of Trev Alberts over Dilfer that year.

I'll tell you, Manny Lawson is a beast. He's big and fast. He was more consistant than Mario Williams.
