Gibbs: 'We've Helped Ourselves So Far'
03/06/2004

By Gary Fitzgerald
Redskins.com
In only the first three days of free agency, the Redskins managed to add four key components to the defense. And in trades, the Redskins picked up a new quarterback and a new tailback.

When Joe Gibbs said the Redskins would be aggressive in free agency, he certainly wasn't being deceptive. So with the acquisitions of Mark Brunell, Clinton Portis, Phillip Daniels, Marcus Washington, Cornelius Griffin and Shawn Springs chalked up in the "Signed" column, what’s next on Joe Gibbs’ shopping list?

Seems like the old man is doing just fine, and not going too whacky with the money. I like how they walked away from Kearse when it looked like the bidding was going to be astronomical. The best part is, there aren't any real "questionable" moves. Nobody's asking if such and such a guy has "anything left in the tank" and so forth. Remember that ? "What, should I show you my tank ?"

people think that Marcus Washington was overpaid, and the same has been said about Griffin.

Not saying I agree bud... just pointing out that the nayasayers still find something to slag on us about.

I agree though... solid moves, solid improvement, young guys that can play out their 'long-term' contracts to make the big bonuses negligible... I think Joe has already answered the bell as to whether his health or age would be a detriment by working as hard or harder than any other coach in the last 6 weeks.

Will it translate to more wins? I most certainly think so, but only time will tell.
Sean Taylor was one of a kind, may he rest in peace.

I saw M. Washingtons' interview on the NFL Network and was impressed. He seemed very personable and praised Coach Gibbs. I think he is going to fit right in with our other LBs, and hopefully cause our opponents grief!!

welcome to the board Jeff, its good to have you. I didn't quite understand the first part of your reply there, but it said Joe in it so I know it was good.

He had a masterpiece visually formed in his mind, and it seems like it's all translating well onto paper thus far. :P ... We won't know what his painting looks until September. This could be a long offseason of waiting ... But times going by pretty fast thus far...

My intuition is that Gibbs would have won 8 games last year even with Spurrier's silly collection ("who needs smash-mouth with Steven Davis when we can nimble-foot with Trung C?"). That's also assuming he would have ditched the run&shoot.

Gibbs would have practiced them until they stopped committing all those bonne-head penalties, which would have added a win or two. And Gibbs would have made adjustments at half-time, adding another win or two.
