If he wins the superbowl before he retires do you think he will be considered the greatest coach of all time?

He'll be considered, but, I'm not sure he'd be the greatest. Desn't Lombardi have that title on lock?

I think that Lombarti has it but he will definatly be a contender. Now if he wins two, then hands down, he's got it.

I think Bill Belicheck has to be considered as well, the guy has won 3 superbowls in a span of 4 years. Thats very impressive.

Bill Belicheck won 3 super bowls with the same QB, if Gibbs wins a 4th with a 4th QB (...and 4th RB), then there is very little argument he isn't the greatest coach of all time. I heard Parcells is a sub-.500 coach without Belichick on his staff, you'd never think that the way they still suck up to him in the media and put him ahead of guys like Gibbs at every opportunity.

Well Said. Already in the HOF, If he wins again it'll be 4 different QB's, RB's and he did it with a team everyone (media) had given up on. He's already a contender for the best all time... one more SB... I say it's a lock.

Gibbs would also be the only coach to win Super Bowls in three different decades if I am not mistaken, that in and of itself is impressive.

Before Belicheck, Parcells was widely seen as the best coach of the modern era simply for taking three teams to Super Bowls. If Gibbs can come back and win it's a lock. Like you all said, four Super Bowls with four different QBs and RBs in three decades and in two different eras. That's a lot more impressive than winning three SBs with one of the greatest QBs in history in Tom Brady leading your team. The only thing that any of those championships have in common is Gibbs, he would hands down be the best.

Also, as for Lombardi, he had something like 12 HOFers on his teams. Gibbs had one in his entire career and that was Riggins who only played in the first Super Bowl!

Actually, he was only the coach for one season (1969, he died in 1970) but his record was solid:

He did pretty well, he had a winning record his first year, but he didn't stay long because of health reasons. He couldn't make a finished product. I would throw that out the window when talking about Lembordi.

he is already one of the greatest coaches but that has been given to V.L.

Another win would solidify his position but I am sure he is already regarded as one of the best, ever. Bill B. is a very good coach but I would be surprised if history looks back on him as being regarded as good a coach as Gibbs.

The yardstick should be could he do as well with your team as with his own - Gibbs would win!

He already is in the top three. Lombardi and Joe Gibbs are 1 and 2 and it is a toss up for third (Tom Landry, Don Shula, or Paul Brown)! If Belicheck had won a forth and hadn't ever coached Cleveland he would be in there!

By the way only one coach has more post season wins than Gibbs (17 wins vs 6 losses) and that is Landry (21 wins vs 16 losses) and he coached almost 200 more reg. season games than Gibbs. He also had infinately more tallent at QB than Gibbs ever had.
