depth on the o-line we signed some players and can get someone later in the draft, corner we signed someone and for replacement for Springs we can do that next year, Lb is deep, why not draft one in this draft thats loaded with good lb''s get a starter for that position for the next 7 or more years.

Taking a offensive lineman at no. 53 if we brought in...

Image
He is a UFA and played for the Ratbirds last year at $800K (1 year deal) Filled in well when Ray Lewis went down.

Here's his profile

Full Name: Tommy William Polley
Born: January 18, 1978
Baltimore, MD
Height: 6-3
Weight: 230 lbs. Age: 28
Pos: LB
Experience: 5 years
College: Florida State
Drafted: Year:2001 Round:2 Pick:11, Rams

He could go into camp with a shot at the weakside spot and free up the draft pick for the O-line.

His Scouting report:
2006 Scouting Report
Grade: 71

Comment:
Is disruptive, plays sideline-to-sideline and has a lot of big play potential. Shows great closing speed and is relentless in pursuit. Also has the speed and quickness to shoot interior gaps as a blitzer. Shows good ball skills and is a little bit of a playmaker. However, Polley has durability and consistency concerns. Polley will also have to improve his consistency and leverage at the point of attack. He plays too high in the phone booth and he lets blockers get into his body. He's lanky and plays more like a rush end at times. Does not show a consistent ability to stack at the point of attack and has some trouble disengaging once locked on.

I agree that best available is the way to go with a late 2nd rounder (either LB, CB or OL). You know there will be a guy or 2 left that are first round material. It will probably be a Cb unfortunately. I think the wealth of LB is not that deep, and the ones left will be 3rd round types. As for OL, it would be great if we could land one of the top 5 guys, but I think W Justice's pro day will move him up and create a run on OL earlier rather than later. But with the wealth of CB, I think we can get a quality back-up CB, that might give us some nickel package flexibility late in the game when we seem to give up leads through the air. That said, if we can get a Booby Carpenter or equivalent, we take him. But I think that quality will be long gone.

I've seen a mock draft that projected D'Qwell Jackson dropping to 53 with us taking him.

I'd be SHOCKED if he dropped that far but I would be going bananas at work if we were able to select him.

Its really hard to project where our 2nd rnd pick will go - but lots of fun. Personally I think OLB is where it should go but an OT makes a lot of sense. I don`t see us taking a CB that early - more likely the 5th or a 6th rnder to develop for the future. I still say watch for RB as a real possibility - particularly if there is anyone useful on the board when we get to pick.

If we pick at 53, Mel Kiper has us picking:

Rocky McIntosh, LB Miami

More information on him HERE

Discuss.

It definitely looks as if our first pick, whether number 53 or above in a trade-up, it is going to be either a LB or a DB. They will decide on the play position and the draft pick depending on the personnel available and the projected teams choices before us. My 2 cents

I would be happy with Demeco Ryans, Rocky McIntosh, MIKE DEGORY (C, G Florida), Ashtin Youbooty, any of the D-Line prospects.

I really like the feeling of drafting for depth. We have a pretty solid starting group and need to fill in quality players for backups and to groom for future Free Agent casualties.
SPIT HAPPENS!!

I'd just be happy to be able to get Jackson a jersey that says Jackson. The fact that D'Qwell is an outstanding linebacker is just a bonus.

Jackson might well be available at # 53. Many consider him undersized for MLB & his numbers at the combine aren't that impressive. I would grab him because he plays much better than his numbers.

According to NFL.com, The Giants have agreed to terms with Arrington. I'd rather he go somewhere other than the NFC East, but it makes it much less likely that the Giants will pick an OLB in the 1st round. I also saw that the Panthers have signed OLB Na'il Diggs, making it less likely that they will draft a LB in the 1st round. That should drop a better LB to us.

Looks like we are going to go after

#53
Daryl Tapp DE

#153
Clint Ingram OLB

#189
Jonny Jolly DT

#196
Terrence Pennington OT

#230
Troy Reddick OT/OG

#250
Ryan Plackemeir PT

This looks pretty good but what I'm supprised by is no CB.

I think we need a LB at #53. Fill starting slots 1st & then look for depth elsewhere.

My best guess is that the following LB's will be gone by #53:
Hawk
Sims
Greenway
Ryans
Carpenter
Howard
Jackson
Hodge.

That would leave:
McIntosh- solid player from a program that has been turning out very good LB's lately.

Alston- excelled at major college level (PAC 10). Blazing speed, very athletic, good strength but undersized. Sack machine at Stanford.

Nande- Incredibly strong (BP 520, Squat 620) fast & athletic. Undersized but overacheiver. Played mid major in college (MAC).
I'd be happy with any of them.
