Tell me about training camp!

Post by Mursilis »

I know it's very early for this, so forgive me! :D
I've never visited training camp, but this year is really looking 'special' for this team, and it would definitely be fun to check it out for once and bring my boy. Those of you who've been, what's it like? Is it open to fans every day? What goes on? Is it easy to get autographs? Share your experiences!

It can get hard to see if you're not too tall (like myself) and are not in the front.

Definately worth the trip. Its not mind blowing excitement but its a lot of fun to see after the offseason drought. Youll meet a lot of forum members/staff.

Mursilis wrote:Is it open to fans every day?

No, they release a schedule that is subject to change.

Mursilis wrote:What goes on?

Drills. Passing, special teams, returns, punts, goaline, warm ups...

If you are willing to wait in the area a long time before its time for hte players to arrive to jockey for position than yes. Even its hit or miss.

i was just at some gamecock spring practices and we had a blast. Spurrier's got these guys playing good football.

anyway i love training camp because it is so raw and the players (especially our outgoing team) will interact with the crowd giving people like myself lasting memories of the skins.

you should go

I don't know how old your son is, but my 4yo loves going. He spends most of the time playing with other kids and BossHog, but he also enjoys seeing the players up close when we make him take a break.

For me, it means I have to try to watch practice and Jackson at the same time, but I still get to see some 7-on-7's and individual position drills.

For me anyway, it's all about soaking in the redskins with my son, my wife (when she can go) and my THN brothers and sisters.

Make sure if you do go, you look for the guys in the THN shirts.

Do yourself a favor and make sure you give yourself plenty of time to get there.

Some idiots don't think the Beltway traffic will get them and end up showing up to training camp with only 10 minutes left in practice!!

So what are you saying here about BH's level of maturity, JF?

It's great fun, especially in the offseason. I went last year (4 days, straight) and enjoyed every part of it. One of the guys there actually recognized me from the day before, it was very fun. They have morning and evening practices. If you're only planning to come to one practice, I'd reccomend a morning practice while its still a little cool.
Hope to see you there in a couple of months!

In all honestly, BH told Jackson no once... once. The guilt trip is still in effect.

Now I just have to hide from the little guy when I want to watch practice instead of playing with him.

Camp's great... people you meet are better. It's just great to watch practice with friends and get a feel for the year's team etc etc... I tend to enjoy the 'evenings' after practice just as much.

We also seem to have developed an annual training camp tequila night as well... anyone is welcome to come... few are able to leave.

I've seen hailskins actually struggle to make it 3 doors down in the hotel... well, not struggle... but he did bounce a lot. ROTFALMAO

Those that have been regulars here for a while know that we'll cover camp as always and have all the info you need posted. We also usually try to make an arrangement with a local hotel to try and get some better room rates.

JF and I will also try and get all the podcasting stuff sorted by this year's camp, so that the two of us and any other THN staffers there can actually try and do some live podcasts and camp summary podcasts daily.

Just keep your eyes peeled and you'll start seeing camp info etc soon after the draft.

I came from Fla last year for all 8 sessions. It was very hot even for someone from FLA, but worth every minute. I din't see any THN'ers so I'll get a shirt this year. Since I have Merriott points I'll probably stay at the courtyards Towncenter so the wife can visit the mall while I'm at training camp. For diehard redskin fans it's a blast. Especially if you like to watch Bugle work the OL like I do. Hope to see you their.

Keep an eye out Ed. We will post a meeting place, usually the last tent all the way to the right if you are looking at the field.

I'm looking forward to meeting some more THN'ers this year. If you don't see the shirts, look for the pink flexy straw if Fios is able to make it again this year.

I have a football from last year signed by everyone in a case on my mantle! You just have to stay a long time and on different days you'll get different signitures. I ended up having great conversations with Santana, Marcus and Shawn Springs when everyone left. Oh and Joe Gibbs himself moved his security guard aside to talk to me when I yelled " I was at carslile"... so anything could happen... great memories and great autographs. Just bring a special football and have fun.. you'll get some sigs.
