NEW YORK (AP) - The 32 compensatory draft choices in the 2006 NFL Draft (April 29-30) awarded to teams that suffered a net loss of certain quality unrestricted free agents last year. The compensatory choices will supplement the 223 choices in the regular seven rounds of the draft, with picks positioned within the third through the seventh rounds based on the value of the free agent lost. Choices listed by round with overall selection in parentheses:
... 7 (250) Washington ...

Compensatory free agents are determined by a formula based on salary, playing time and postseason honors. The formula was developed by the NFL Management Council. Not every free agent lost or signed by a club is covered by this formula.
That's bogus. Pierce and Smoot screwed us again by not living up to their expectations. Well at least we didn't have to use our money on them last year.
I hope we humiliate the Vikings on MNF so Smoot realizes that money isn't everything.
This is BULL. When other teams give up players like Pierce and Smoot they get third round picks. When we lose players like Pierce and Smoot we get a late 7th rounder. Bogus.

Pierce and Smoot were both injured and didn't play full seasons...Smoot hardly played at all. We're lucky we got anything out of them.

perfectly stated, Redskins4Life. if the eagles gave up those same two players they would probably get two 2nd round picks! this is horsecrap.
See this is when we will see how skilled our FO is. I dont want to hear that the draft is such a hit or miss because you have guys like Ozzie (sp) down in Baltimore who simply FILLS that team with talent. The Ravens hardly ever get big names via the draft but their depth chart is chock full of guys who can step up and play.
We need to find guys who are coachable, have a good head on the shoulders and show a spark of promise. Let these cats go to Europe, coach them up, let them learn so that they'll be ready for us in 2-3 years. I want to see some of these guys become gems, I want the league to be all over them because they were such a gem in the latter rounds, such a steal that nobody knew about,.
The best you can get is a 3rd rounder I believe. We should have gotten a 7th rounder for Smoot, but we definitely should have gotten a 3rd rounder for Pierce. He only played 13 games for NY, but he had 98 tackles, 3 sacks, a FF and 2 Ints. That's definitely better than the Giants previously had and those are upper end MLB stats in the whole league. We have been robbed of a 3rd rounder and it really irritates me...
No, its because we got Rabach and Patten. One way to look at it is Patten was for Smoot and Rabach was for Pierce. In the end we got less so to make up for that we get a 6th round pick. Its a balancing act. If we didn't pick up free agents we would have go a lot but we didn't. We got guys out of free agency who started for us.

Bingo! and Patten and Rabach played a lot more games than Pierce and Smoot.

are you sure about that? I was under the impression that aquired players had nothing to do with lost players...
