The Origin and usage of the word 'Redskin'

Post by rick301 »

Here is an intersting article on the history of the word 'Redskin'

http://itre.cis.upenn.edu/~myl/language ... 02961.html

I believe that this term was - and is - a nobel expression of admiration.

All I know is if our name is ever forced to change, im betting there will be a lot of people who are offened that notre dame are the "fighting" irish. I mean this clearly implies that ALL irish people drink and fight. And after that pandoras box will be open.

I just thought the Bullets where the female version of the (at the time) powerhouse Bulls.

As far as the name of our franchise, people need to lighten up.
It is just a word.

People just take stuff WAY to personal and are WAY to sensitive. I honestly wouldnt give 2 squirts of monkey piss if there were a team named the honkies. The only part that would be offensive is if they went 2-16. Then eveyone would be pissed. People want to sue Fast food for getting fat, and because their HOT coffee, is well.. hot. I dont care if its a postMAN or a postWOMAN, just bring me my damn mail. I wish the world would take into account the famous words of the sargent in the movie strips... "Lighten up Francis"!

I know talking about this is like beating a dead horse but I actually read the Goddard article at found it very intriguing. Have never really been offended by the name of our team and I actually have Cherokee ancestory (Great Great Grand Mother). May this very detailed article can finally put this issue to rest.

NCAA already ruled on this and other "problem" names and mascots. Notre Dame is now just the Irish and the irish dude with his fists up in the air is gone also... There is no fighting Irish or Illini for that matter....

The origin of the name may offend some Native Americans, however, the name "Redskins" has basically taken on a different meaning and the intent behind the name is not to offend.

The name "Redskins" in my opinion just represents and image of Native warriors, just like any other tribal name like Seminoles or Chiefs.

From my understanding, many Native representatives have expressed that they are not offended by the use of the name. If they aren't then why would I be.

Wrong. Notre Dame has officially been knon as the Fighting Irish since 1927, and that continues to be their official nickname today.

Notre Dame also still uses the Lebrechaun logo:

You know it's the offseason at Hogs.net when this topic makes its annual appearance.
Those native Americans are driving me crazy.
Why don't they just go back where they came from ? :) /sarcasm

You know I take offence to the term "honkey cracker" also since I'm white. Why can't we all just get along and slightly alter the name to "The Rednecks." wouldn't that be funny listening to the announcers...."Ok Joe here we have the REDNECKS taking the field now." "WOW, did you see that REDNECK hit that cowboy Joe?"lol. I'm in tears with laughter.sorry.

Who cares what negative meanings a name MIGHT have? It clearly is being celebrated in the most positive light possible by millions of adoring Wahington Redskins fans. If anything, the focus should be on how the team and their name seek to exalt the most excellent of human qualities. So the argument is moot.

Now how about them Brokeback Mountain Cowboys? I always thought M. Irvin and Emmett had a little thing for each other:) Maybe they should change their logo from a star to two cowboys nuzzling each other!

Well since this topic has once again reared its ugly head I wnat to add my two cents.

The term redskin means about the same as calling african americans black and caucasian americans white. If the redskins have to change there name then the cincinnati reds should have to change their names... not to mention they would need to correct the hundreds of thousands of applications that refer to people as black or white.

With the exception of a few racial slurs that were invented to be negative anything to me is acceptable. I think that anyone that gets offened by the way they are decribed needs to get a life... in todays "politically correct" world people are just looking for reasons to get mad and to them a say $crew you!!!

By the way I am a brownskin, green suit wearer in the bluegrass state!... hope I didn't offened the grass or the army with those statements.
Well what more would you expect out of the "Worst Team" in the "Best Division"

Why? The name "Reds" come from the name "Red Stockings", which is what the Cincinnati ballclub was originally named. It has no racial implications.
