Redskins | Gibbs happy with punter and kicker
Thu, 16 Mar 2006 23:11:38 -0800

Jason LaCanfora, of the Washington Post, reports Washington Redskins head coach Joe Gibbs said the team is not in the market for a kicker or punter, with PK John Hall recovered from another injury-plagued season and P Derrick Frost showing enough promise to remain in Washington. Gibbs said Frost may handle kickoff duties to relieve the strain on Hall's leg.

Hall is no longer reliable to stay healthy and I have not been impressed by Frost. Could the real reason be that they have spent so much elsewhere?

Look at the kickers that are out there. They are big name kickers that would be looking for big deals. Vinatari has won SBs and played on the cheap in NE. Now my guess is that he would probably want to see the money now.

How many games did John Hall lose for us last year? He is not a horrible kicker. With the new O-coordinator and new WRs and TE, Hall may only need to just kick extra points.

I predict that out of sixteen games, we may need Hall to win may 2 or 3 if that many. Yeah, I am drinking the Koolaid with the new additions to the offense and no major losses on the defense. With this defense and if the new offense can put up 20 points a game, we may not need Hall. I can't wait until the season starts.

This could be the year.....

I disagree I believe Hall will rebound with a solid year...Frost did improve last in the season.

I'll really be surprised if Frost is our punter when the season starts... he had some really bad kicks in crucial situations and was lucky to have some 20 yard rolls a few other times... as a matter of fact, we already "went after" that punter form Canada that signed with Green Bay. As for Hall, I'm sure Joe's going to keep a close eye on him... first sign of injury will probably land him on IR for the season... I don't see Gibbs holding a roster spot open for weeks at a time again... I'm sure he'll bring in some serious competition for these guys in camp rather than go out now looking at free agents now...

Most (college) punters are signed after the draft as free agents. I'd bet my Barbie collection that we sign a young punter or two and let them compete with Frost.

And I think Hall did slowly improve atthe end of the year. When he's healthy, he's one of the best.

Hall is fine, whatever, but Frost!

Derrick Frost is the WORST punter I have ever seen.

Can somebody explain to me how all a punter does, everyday in practice all year practice Punting, and that's it, and then in a game he comes out and shanks a 14 Yard Punt!

Honestly, you could pay me half of what he gets and if all I day 24/7 was punt the ball and work out my leg strength I know I could be as good as him.

FROST SUCKS

I disagree. He was horrible and it seemed like he was averaging 25 yards a kick for several games. Hopefully we can land someone decent in the draft for some insurance if Hall gets hurt again. I trust Frost about as far as he can shank a punt

I'm sure even the best punters shank one every now and then.
Would you say that mike vanderjagt, the most accurate kickewr in the history of the NFL, sucks because he shanked the game winning field goal in one playoff game?

Now if Frost shanked them on a regular basis, it would be different. In my mind, he did a pretty decent job this past season. Personnally, i would rather have TT back. But i'm pretty happy with derrick.

Frost doesn't shank too many, but he does seem to do it at the worst possible times.

Point taken, F4L. I certainly wouldn't say that but Frost does makes me nervous.

I would not be surprised to see Hall as our kicker on opening day but I am fairly sure that if he is there then we will have someone who can punt AND do kickoffs to take some of the pressure off Hall and also because he seems to like hitting people on kickoffs. We need him kicking goals not making tackles.
Until recently, Snyder & Allen have made a lot of really bad decisions - nobody with any sense believes this franchise will get better under their guidance
Snyder's W/L record = 45% (80-96) - Snyder/Allen = 41% (59-84-1)

Frost ranked 28th in the NFL with a 40.4 average. But he has decent peripherals (30.3% inside the 20, 7.9% touchback, 38.3 net). His problem is consistency - and I think its clear he shanks punts at a higher ratio than the average punter. The coaching staff must believe that Frost will get that straightened out, because his 2005 season wasn't very good, despite the reasons for optimism.

There was a replacement kicker who won a game for us against the Seahawks. What was his name I think that was frost. If he won one for us in the clutch he should be able to do that for us again. History tends to repeat itself.

It's Nick Novak, and despite being very accurate, he just doesn't have an NFL leg. He had two of his ten kicks blocked, and his longest field goal was just 40 yards. Only one of his kickoffs went for a touchback.

He's a great quick-fix (he won't kill your team like a Jose Cortez), but he's just not a long-term solution.

Frost is not likely to be here when next season opens.

I have always liked Hall, so I am glad to see we are committed to winning with him.

Also, Frost will probably be alright... but if we're bringing in a guy to take the kickoff duties off Hall's leg then why not bring in another punter to compete?

I bet they bring in a few punters to compete with Frost..

Looks like Hall is our guy, I'm a bit surprised with that considering his cap hit this year -- nearly $2 mil.

The one thing I've noticed through the years is that punters take a few years to mature -- maybe we lived through one of Frost's learning/maturing years and he's ready to break out for us.

Danny Smith is a super ST coach - sure he'll figure it out.
