49ers Add Help in the Secondary with Harris Wednesday, March 15, 2006
The San Francisco 49ers announced Wednesday that CB Walt Harris has been signed as an unrestricted free agent. Terms of the contract were not announced by the team.
Harris (5-11, 190) is a ten-year NFL veteran who has played with the Chicago Bears (1996-01), Indianapolis Colts (2002-03) and the Washington Redskins. He was originally drafted by Chicago in the first round of the 1996 draft out of Mississippi State.
Harris has started in 127 of 147 games in his career. He has accumulated 690 total tackles, 20 interceptions, 14 forced fumbles and 10 fumble recoveries. Harris immediately stepped into the starting cornerback role as a rookie in Chicago in 1996. He was a starter for both seasons with Indianapolis, before joining the Redskins as a key backup and special teams player in 2004. Harris started 12 of 13 games at left cornerback last season and finished the year with 68 total tackles, one interception and one forced fumble.
