Jason Campbell will be the Starter
My guess is this may have been discussed already but…
In thinking about it, barring something unforeseen, Jason Campbell will be our starting QB this upcoming season.
Why:
In a perfect world he would likely ride the pine one more year. But the world is rarely perfect.
Assuming he has NFL talent, (which it appears he does) can we all agree there is NO WAY he rides pine TWO more years? (This upcoming season AND the following) Good.
So he will definitely start in 2007 no matter what.
Let's look at this season. - Thanks to the addition of Mr. Saunders, ALL players will be leaning a new system. Not to mention the 2 new additions to the WR corps that folks will need to get comfortable with. Nuances of route running, etc.
You put these factors together and you figure there likely will be at least a few growing pains the first 1/2 of the season or so while everyone adjusts. My guess is, the hope around Redskin park is that they can right the ship by the half way mark and finish strong. Sorry- w/ learning a new offense I just do NOT see Super Bowl.
OK. Now 2007 is upon us. Remember we all agreed Campbell will not ride the bench for two MORE years. So now Campbell is the starter. Granted he is in his 3rd year, he has never seen live NFL action. Soooo….another year of DEFINITE growing pains with what is, in effect, a rookie QB. No way we win the SB in what amounts to Campbells rookie season.
So that puts us in 2008 before we can legitimately hope to make a run for the title.
The bench Campbell again plan wastes 2 years.
The Campbell starts THIS year plan only wastes one.
JG is about 50 times smarter than I am so he obviously knows this too.
Start Campbell this season, let all the players learn the system together and get comfortable w/each other.
Then in 2007 we can commence our run to multiple Super Bowl appearances!
Thus ends the lesson.

I don't know...
Mark Brunell's contract is set up as such that we can release him after this coming season...
Also, I think you make a false assumption when you say Campbell's time is wasted by being on the bench.
He is learning all the time, sure, being on the field is great learning experience too, but he's not wasting his time.
I think he will get SOME playing time next season to take the stress off of Mark B. but Brunell is a guy who can lead us to the playoffs... why change horses in mid-stream?

i just had a thought, it might be stupid but here goes, what if gibbs and al rotate brunell and cambell for a bit, maybe start brunell, campell in the second half, start cambell let brunell clean up, like having two different offenses one with a pocket passer and one with a scrambler... it might just confuse defenses... though it might confuse our O line and wide outs too.. just writting this im confused

Please re-read. His time is not wasted on the bench. In fact in a perfect world I would like him to stay there.
When I say 1 year wasted I am specifically refering to the abliity to win a Super Bowl.
Due MOSTLY to the changes in offensive system, and partly to the 2 new WR's, it will be very difficult to win it all. Next year will be a year of learning for everyone. Why not inlude Campbell in that learning so he won't be so far behind in 2007.
In other words. 2006 will be a bust no matter what we do, so lets make 2007 better by playing Campbell now.

All players are learning a new system but I think you'll be surprised at how similar Gibbs and Saunders systems are. Gibbs has said it as well that the terminology, formations (especially if you look at tape of the 'Skins in say, 1991) are very similar. So, while things are tweaked, it's basically Gibbs' offense on steroids (or as it was when clicking on all cylinders back in the day). I'm not going to count out Campbell starting but judging by Gibbs' past, I would say Brunnell has the upper hand UNLESS Campbell goes into camp and shows he's the better man/QB.
It will be interesting to watch how it pans out.

Part of me would love to see the Jason Campbell era start sooner rather than later. Let's see how M.B. looks in the preseason and if he's just "okay" and if Jason is lighting it up, maybe this would be a good year to give him a try.

To add onto my previous post, nothing would surprise me. Gibbs basically handed over the offense and play calling duties. I think Gibbs is willing to look at and do anything.
I think Campbell has to look really really good to win the job though.

I think we're gonna go into minicamp/camp the same way we have been doing since Coach Joe took the reigns. And that is the best man takes the top position. Gibbs has always stressed to his players that every season no matter what, it will always be competition. He will put the best man on top everytime. So, if Campbell comes out and looks so much better than MB then we're going to see a new starter next year and if not then MB is staying until his arm falls off or until he gets beaten out by Campbell

Nothing's more exciting than a life of a Redskin fan. haha yuuup.
I think getting Brunell up to speed on the new offense is going to take some time as it is. It might be Campbell's 2nd year but throwing him in with 10 other guys that are new to the scheme too doesnt seem like the right thing to do from day 1. Hopefully he can get some work in week 16 and 17 when Brunell is resting for the playoffs...

Jason Campbell is going to start getting reps, and will pick up more time according to his performance. I have been frantically searching for the source, and, of course, can't find it... where one of the Redskin coaches was overheard describing Campbell as a "superstar in the making". Hyperbole? Your guess is as good as mine... but one can hope.

I recognize that Joe and Al will do the right thing with our QBs, as they're great coaches - no question. However, without seeing players play, or knowing how players have progressed, etc... I'd like to see the following scenario roll out in 2006:
Game 1 -- Campbell starts as our QB. Here's why --
I don't believe that Brunnel can stay healthy the whole year. He stayed relatively healthy this past year but was wearing down as the year progressed. He didn't have anything left in the tank in the playoffs...I believe Ramsey would have offered more in the last 2 games than Brunnel did.
I don't see Collins being a guy who takes us very far in the playoffs...he's our 3rd stringer ONLY.
If we start with Brunnel and he makes it say, 10 games into the season, then gets hurt - Campbell enters game 11 and has 5 games to play to get his act together before the playoffs. Why not give him all 16 games? Use Brunnel if Campbell gets hurt or has a few bad games. That way, Brunnel could enter later in the year and end the year a lot fresher than last year.
Have I entererd Narnia and lost it?

If I were Gibbs, I'd try convince Brunnell to hang em up and become part of their staff, as another quarterbacks coach. Depending on the preseason, I'd likely go with Ramsey to start the year. It's beem written that Brunnell and Ramsey have had a close bond. If Ramsey were to falter, relapse, then I'd fully transition to either Brunnell, who would be re-signed, or to Campbell.
Not likely, I know, but this is what I would do. Is that even legal by the way? I'm pretty sure you can do it in the NBA (have a coach from the team come off the bench).

I'd like to see Campbell play this year if for no other reason then to rest brunell, who is always broken down come playoff time. I think Gibbs is old school and does not want to depend on a young player for much of anything. Just look how quick he was to get rid of Ramsey last year. We still don't know what Ramsey's potential is in the NFL.

Absolutely correct - Brunell was injured late in the season last year, and it showed in his play. I'm one of those who doesn't believe this team will get to the Super Bowl with Brunell as the starter. I'd love to be wrong, but his history says otherwise. I'd love for JC to be the starter straight out of camp.
What with all the additions we've added on offense, QB is the one nagging question. Who's it going to be? If it's Brunell, will he last the year?

I seriously doubt Ramsey's going to be here come the start of the season. There's no way they carry 4 QB's on the roster, and between JC, Brunell, Collins, and Ramsey, who do you think Gibbs is likely to cut? It has to be Ramsey; Gibbs has been trying to replace him since he got here.
Talking about how Coach Joe is reluctant to use young players...i think Ramsey's case is different because he's from the Spurrier Era and not really chosen and picked out by Gibbs. So saying Gibbs is reluctant to use a young QB based on Ramsey's case doesn't really prove anything.

I have no doubt in my mind that Gibbs is thinking the same thing. I love his approach of making his players constantly EARN their spots. I think Mark did a heck of a job last year, and IMO earned the starter position, but, I also think that if JC wins the poistion in camp, he should start. This TC will be fun!!!

Campbell will start next season after Brunnel gets hurt. Notice I didn't say if he gets hurt! Brunnel hasn't had a fully healthy season in over five years and the Skins still haven't done anything to fix their grave problem of depth at O-line. That all spells an injury for MB.
What cracks me up more is I also know that this Phill Collins guy will look great during preseason because he knows the offense and he will be going against 2nd and 3rd stringers. And when that happens half of you will be saying "Screw Campbell, lets start Collins" and I will just laugh!
Best case senario is Brunnel plays for most of the season, Campbell gets some playing time, Brunnel strugles down the road but plays well enough for us to win the SB. In 2007 Gibbs turns the team over to Campbell and Gibbs wins his 5th SB with his 5th starting QB and goes down in history as the NFL's best ever Head Coach!

I hope Jason starts, but it is a tough call. I just think that ultimatly he is going to be our QB so lets just get the process started. He has had a year to watch and learn. He had like 3 or 4 Offensive coordinators in college so I dont think Saunders system will mess him up to much, especially in light of the fact that it is similar to Gibbs system. Also... although i havnt seen him much, from what i have seen and also what ive heard from people who have seen him in training camp etc, he seems to be a pretty cool customer. I dont think the game is bigger than him. Im pretty sure he can go in there and with our weapons, he can focus on minimizing mistakes and not try to do to much. And hey if he can do more then great. I mean for every akili smith or cade mcknown, you have a Rothlesberger, marino, brady etc.. Guys who can handle the pressure and do well. So bring it on I say.

Campbell's not going to be the starter to begin the season, no matter what happens in preseason (unless what happens is Brunell gets hurt)... Joe knows this is Brunell's last season, and he's going to wring every ounce of veteran leadership he can out of him... I also don't think he'll last a whole season, I think we'll see Jason start a game or two...
