Overpaying? Basic economics!

Hey, a lot of people seem to be concerned that we have been overpaying our new signings. I just wanted to point out that with the new CBA we now have approximately the same amount of FAs on the market but A LOT more money chasing them (in fact the new CBA probably meant less cuts so there may even be fewer FAs on the market this year).

Now assuming that on average a team probably has about $10 million to spend in FA, that number has now almost DOUBLED! (Of course this is just a rough estimate and I don't have actual statistics to back it up, I just based it on what I have typically seen each year.)

So, when there is more money chasing fewer guys this is obviously going to cause quite a bit of inflation in contracts. Guys who are FAs this year are going to make a killing! I actually think that the contracts we have signed so far are fairly reasonable given these circumstances. They are still fairly large but you always will have to pay a bit more to get what you really want. When all is said and done these contracts will not look as big as they look right now.

Now, our cap is a completely different issue. I don't really want to go into that here but I understand that there are a lot of roster bonuses and such that we can guarantee in order to save millions this year. I am sure that Danny boy and his accountants have their minds around this and know wht they're doing, you don't become a billionaire by luck!

So basically, all I'm saying is this offseason is going to see a sharp increase in the contracts that players sign league wide. A lot of people have complained that our new signees have been paid too much but I don't think these contracts are as lavish as many of you think.

It's also important not to focus too much on the total dollar figure of a contract and consider instead how much of that money is guranteed and/or likely to ever be paid out. A perfect example of this is the deal Shaun Alexander signed.

Bidding against yourself is BAD management.

The Bears offered Randel El 18 million over 6 years with a 8 million signing bonus.

The Redskins offered him 7 years for 31 million and a 11.5 signing bonus. The deal can be voided after 6 years.

So we overpaid.

Lloyd is a MUCH better reciever in every way, this makes NO sense.

I hope Lloyd is the #2 this year and Randle El is just a very expensive #3, he's done more damage by signing that contract than he wil all season, I can tell you that.

We don't know the details of the contracts or how negotiations went. We don't know if the Bears upped their offer while we were talking to him. The 49ers and Eagles were also supposedly interested. Also, he may have been willing to accept less to go back to Chicago. We don't know all these things so we have no idea if we were really bidding against ourselves or not.

Oh, because I don't bow down to the Redskins and praise every single move they make?

They wasted a bunch of money that could have gone towards actually giving the Redskins a pass rush this season.

I don't see how they are mutually exclusive. Didn't you just say that John Abraham is visiting Redskins Park today? Have there been any reports that have indicated that we are no longer interested in Andre Carter? Why the assumption that the Redskins are done adding pieces?

You can't really judge these moves unitl the entire body of work has been completed.

How much money can we afford to spend?

If mediocre players are getting blockbuster contracts, how can we spend for guys who are actually good, dependable players?

I hope we can work out something for Abraham, or at least sign Carter (to be a DE)...

Keep in mind that Abraham requires both dough and trade bait, what do the Redskins have to offer in terms of a trade?

Dont forget, these pick ups ARENT DEON!!! for the most part, besieds loyyd being upset with SF, we are getting TEAM PLAYERS!!!!!!! SO what if they are semi high profile. they arent HEADACHES! Just real good players. WHy not try to get them.

True enough, maybe someone needs to throw a cup of cold water in my face or something, but I really don't like the idea of having A.R.E take playing time from someone I percieve to be a much better WR... I had thought the interest in him was over once we traded for Lloyd, but I guess not.

Nice use of sychophant by the way, it's such a cool word, and people don't seem to use it nearly enough. I think it was Bob Cousy (sp?) who used to learn a new word every day and use it at least 3 times to help him remember.

Anyway, I guess we'll see what happens... as far as I can see the Skins need a DE, a OLB, a P, a CB, and a TE probably in that order.

I don't agree that Lloyde is better in everyway over Randle-El. I don't know the details of the contract that he signed with the Skins and the one that Chicago offered, but if you do please share them with us. 7 years/31 million could be more cap friendly than 6/18. You can't tell without the details. So I'm don't have enough info to argue either way.

The problem is you're screwing up the market all over the place.

Randel-El's deal is going to have repurcussions league wide. Can you imagine what guys will ask for if a guy with 35 catches got that deal?

you have to build a team with the draft and chemistry - not buy a team like the Skins are "trying" to do - it wont work - overpaying players makes them lazy and not hungry any longer

I agree on that basic theory of teammaking gottoloveit, but the Lloyd is 24 and ARE is 25... We're not adding a bunch of over the hill vets... there's a difference... IMO you need to build a core of younger players before you can have a team.

That makes sense. EL is pretty versatile, he can wear a few different hats and perform them all well, thats what I like about him.

We're just a week away from the agonization over the Redskins and Arrington parting way. What bothers me is that there WILL be an equally tough day next season.

The Redskins used to spend the wrong money on the wrong players. They've improved dramatically over recent years in determining the right players to pursue.

The new CBA gave the Redskins more rope. I, as everyone else, will be interested to see what they do with it.
