Big names like Culpepper/Brees and more unrealistic cap banter aside you all actually feel that it would be better to go with Collins than anyone else available?

And this decision is based on his ability and familiararity with the chief system as opposed to his actual playing ability which has proven to be at best mediocre.

I think I'd rather start grooming another rookie or picking up a Mike McMahon type.

Mike McMahon??? Okay, you just lost all credibility.

First: I don't have panties+ if I did they would not be in a wad
Second: I'm not all worked up
Third: I'm not an idiot and think we should sign Dante Culpepper or trade portis/samuals/ moss to the colts for Manning or some stupid crap thats completely unrealistic Madden 2007 no salary cap garbage.
Taking all things into account the fact remains that:

Last year we had Campbell, Brunell, and Ramsey.....I was happy we were strong all the way through and I would have been happy with any of them at the helm.

This year we are considering Campbell, Brunell, and Todd Collins? I'm unhappy because our team is weaker and if Collins is starting yikes.

Remember when Tim Hassleback was #3? A lot of you thought he could have become the cinderella starter guy like a frerotte or Trent green type (before they became big names)

It kind of fired me up when he played.

Collins is a washed up has been, no excitement and no chance to find a diamond in the rough. Agree?
I mean can dude hold for Pk's or something, what good is he? I dont buy the "knows the system" argument if a better player is out there for around the same price (ie Tim Hassleback if available)

Josh McCown... Arizona
Ty Detmer ... Atlanta
Anthony Wright... Baltimore
Shane Matthews... Buffalo
Chris Weinke... Carolina
Jeff Blake... Chicago
Jon Kitna ... Cincinnati
Jeff Garcia... Detroit
Craig Nall... Green Bay
Damon Huard... Kansas City
Sage Rosenfels... Miami
Shaun Hill... Minnesota
Doug Flutie... New England
Tim Hasselbeck... New York Giants
Vinny Testaverde... New York Jets
Charlie Batch... Pittsburgh
Drew Brees... San Diego
Jesse Palmer... San Francisco
Jamie Martin... St. Louis

There's your list of UFA QBs. You want one that will be content as the third QB, comes cheap, and knows the system.

Have at it

You said you were happy last year, well that should tell you that you aren't going to be able to carry 3 starters on your roster at QB...people simply don't want to be career backups. You need role players and can't just try and sign some guy like Kitna when he knows he's not going to play.

Three pages on Todd Collins.

It's not as if he's going to battle for the #1 position for goodness sake. He's going to be our #3 and help Brunell and Campbell understand Saunders and his system better.

Californiaskin... I wish I had your problems because it seems the worst thing to happen to you in a while involves Todd Collins becoming our THIRD STRING quarterback.

I wish that was my biggest worry in life. :?

That's what makes this thread fun! We're discussing some dude who will more-than-likely never see the field. Not only that, but we currently have five quarterbacks on our active roster. With Ramsey going to go, we'll still have four and who knows which of the two will be #3.

Californiaskin, you're acting like the lady who holds a Christmas ham under her arm, complaining that she doesn't have any bread.

lol, apparently I'm the only guy on this board that actually thinks Collins could step in if necessary and lead us to wins. I'd love to have Todd on our roster. He reminds me of that guy Buffalo had for years who was Kelly's backup. Played awesome when he played, but never saw the field much.

Todd will probably never see the field, but with our system, coaches and hopefully new additions at WR, I don't foresee a problem if he does have to play. Look what Brunell has done, and we all left him for dead....

I`m just wondering, along with several others, whether the reason that we`re still chasing Randel El , has as much to do with the fact that he is an option at QB as his ability at WR. Maybe that gives us extra insurance at QB - Collins career numbers are a worry. More interceptions than TDS - wasn`t the problem with Ramsey?

Actually, it was not. Patrick had 34 TDs and 29 Ints.

There is no question in my mind that this move is a downgrade from Patrick. Obviously, Campbell is number 2 (going on to 1) now.

For those of us old enough to remember Joe's 1st tenure in Wash, we know that Joe would much rather have a veteran QB than a rookie. So he could care less about grooming (another) guy.

I beleive he's listening to Al Saunders here -- shouldn't we all trust that guy? If Saunders thought he was a bum, he wouldn't have let this get this far.

I trust Al on this one. The 3rd stringer carries the board, helps in the film room, doesn't complain about not playing and most importantly, doesn't cost us what Ramsey cost us...the cap makes decisions in the NFL today.

To think you need to have 3 stud QBs remember this -- NO team will win if their 3rd string guy walks onto the field --heck, most teams don't win with their 2nd stringer.

Collins is our guy.

Yeah most teams dont expect or ever want to see their 3rd Qb hit the field. I think this would be a great signing, a veteran who knows the system.

Surely Collins will be brought in at No3 as we don't need to give him any reps teaching him the Offence. We can concentrate on bringing Brunnel and Campbell up to speed.

It'a quite rare that you need to use your No3 isn't it.

Whew... if this isn't the type of thread that just proves how bored some of the members get in the offseason.

Todd Collins is the second coming.

No wait... Todd Collins is the worst QB that the Redskins could possibly consider.

I'd like to know when the last time a third string quarterback did anything to impact a team's success ON THE FIELD. They earned the nickname 'clipboard holder' for a reason... they are always either projects... or veterans that can help mentor or teach.

With Campbell on the roster, we have a 'project', we don't need another young guy behind him as well IMO.

And at what point does the quarterback corps as a whole get consider 'upgraded' strictly for the probable upgrade in Campbell's readiness to play?
Sean Taylor was one of a kind, may he rest in peace.

Ok Now that we have El I hope we do sign Todd Collins even though IMO he sucks.

El can be our #3 and Collins can coach him up!

Satisfaction is mine! Now I will rest easy knowing we will be Ok if Brunell and Campbell go down.

I am actually excited about Todd Collins being on the Redskins. He's the perfect #3 QB. He can coach Campbell and Brunell, he can be a cheerleader, he can rally the troops, he can give imput to Sanders about what he sees from a player's perspective and he can fill in nicely if needed.

Only one question, can he hold snaps? (Laces OUT Collins!)

Here's a prediction: Todd Collins will do more for this team than Patrick Ramsey ever did during his time in Gibbs' second tenure. My 2 cents

Dang! TRO comes back with guns-a-blazin! What's next...more threads defending Danny Wuerffel's honor? JK

No more Danny threads from me. His memory will forever be enshrined in my avatar. :hail: DW :hail:

As for my statement, before you call it nonsense, keep in mind what happened the last time TRO backed a "left-for-dead" QB that everyone had cast off.

I' won't prdeict the guys numbers, but you can take the following to the bank:

MARK my words, IF Todd Collins is on our squad, he will contribute more than Patrick Ramsey ever could under Joe Gibbs.

NO WAY! He sucks! We should have traded our 2nd round pick for Drew Brees to play 3rd string QB!!!!!!!

{/sarcasm]

If true this is a good move. I think the Redskins QB situation is VERY strong.

NFL.com confirms the signing of Todd Collins:

Washington now has a logjam at quarterback. With Mark Brunell as the starter, and Patrick Ramsey and Jason Campbell on the roster, the went out and got Chiefs backup Todd Collins to the tune of a two-year, $2.5 million contract with a signing bonus of $450,000.
