The San Francisco 49ers traded leading receiver Brandon Lloyd to Washington on Saturday for the Redskins' third-round pick this year and their fourth-round selection in 2007.
Lloyd was a restricted free agent for the 49ers, who drafted him in the third round three years ago. He was San Francisco's top receiver last season, catching 48 passes for 733 yards and five touchdowns, but alienated teammates and clashed with the coaching staff.
San Francisco signed Lloyd to an offer sheet earlier in the month, but Lloyd seemed eager to leave town - and Washington seems enamored with his highlight-reel skills. He was scheduled to visit the Redskins' training complex Sunday.
Though Lloyd made countless eye-popping catches during his three years with San Francisco, he also made a series of memorable drops and mistakes. Lloyd drew criticism from hard-nosed teammates such as Fred Beasley and Kevan Barlow for his flashy jewelry - and his aspirations to become a rapper in his spare time.
Lloyd caught 105 passes for 1,510 yards and 13 touchdowns in his three seasons with San Francisco. He also caught rookie quarterback Alex Smith's only touchdown pass of the season in the 49ers' season-ending win over Houston.
The 49ers already released receiver Johnnie Morton earlier in the offseason, leaving oft-injured Arnaz Battle as their most experienced receiver. They're expected to go after free agents, including Pittsburgh's Antwaan Randle-El, and seek more receiving help in next month's draft.

Sweet - not only is he a great acquisition, but for once the skins didn't trade too much to get him. A 3rd and a 4th is a great price to pay for a quality WR. He's the equivalent of a first-rounder in the draft. This should really open up the offense. Now let's just hope Brunell stays healthy next season.

He's 6', 180 pounds and is 24. He's rated at 72 Lloyd has marginal size for a receiver lacking both the ideal height and the bulk for the position. However, he makes up for his lack of ideal size with excellent athletic ability. He has very good foot quickness and good speed, though his top end speed is not in the elite class. He has a good surge off the line of scrimmage and runs precise routes. He has a burst coming out of his cuts to get separation and shows the ability to move a defender who is in man coverage with very little wasted motion. He uses his hands and his foot quickness to get off press coverage and knows how to find the voids in coverage. He has excellent hands and can make the acrobatic catch. He shows excellent focus and concentration on the ball when it is in the air, and with his long arms and his leaping ability, he will win most jump ball contests. He can be a threat with the ball in his hands and has a good feel for where he is on the field and where the sideline is at all times. He lacks the physical stature to be a physical blocker down field and is more of a screen and wall off guy. A big, strong defensive back can muscle him out of his routes on occasion. Overall, he needs to improve his strength and is becoming a reliable go-to receiver with excellent hands who is competitive for the ball in any situation. He usually catches what he can touch.

This is a WR that is coming into his prime... WR's typically hit their stride in their 3rd year... I think he can put up pretty good numbers w/o Alex Smith....
I have had this guy on my Fantasy team two years in a row now... He was a decent bye week fill in...
He has attitude... (not sure if it is bad or not) but he does have a swagger... Kevan Barlow hated him... but Barlow is no world beater either....
I never thought Llyod when I was thinking about possible WR's for the Redskins... but after hearing about this trade I am pleasantly surprised... This isn't a totally flashy pickup...but it makes a lot of sense...

I agree. Shades of Darnerian McCants and Ron Artest, although it should be pointed out that there are many players who take interest in other endeavors and also reach their full potential.
Looks like with ey, Moss and Lloyd the Skins will be an all screen team next season. Brunell might complete 80% next year, haha.
Seriously though, Lloyd is a lot like Moss in his elusiveness (though not quite as good, or fast) but has better hands and can jump higher. This is great. Maybe a 4th WR who is a big target like JJ would be nice... but I think we might be set on offense.

It's true, I am a fan of the Red Sox and we have a pitcher who is an aspiring musician, but he's still a work in progress.
At least being a rapper isn't very physical... Now if Lloyd was playing CF for the Nationals and getting worn out... I might have a bigger problem, haha

Prorated over 5 years, that's not a bad deal.
Less can be guaranteed this year and more could be listed as LTBE bonuses and roster bonuses paid in future years, only to be converted into guaranteed money next year and prorated over 6 years. It's going to happen league wide (that's why so many signings seem so high)

JJ is gone. He's part of the Browns now. The Browns also bought a Bentley and signed Kevin Shaffer.

Its impressive how quickly we got this deal done. Thats the Number 1 need taken care of - now for DE! I don`t know a whole lot about Lloyd but it seems from what you guys have been writing that, rapping apart , he is a good fit for our needs. I suppose we could still acquire another WR through tha draft , unless we trade away our 2nd rounder - that would make the Draft a non-event for us. Any chance we might get anything in a trade for Taylor Jacobs ? I know , nobodys going to be interested - what a bust! Thanks Steve Spurrier.
