Royal signs with Bills (1st blow of Free Agency)

Post by Skeletor »

Former Washington tight end Robert Royal has reached an agreement with Buffalo on a five-year, $10 million deal that includes a $2.5 million signing bonus.

Washington and San Francisco are nearing a deal that would send a 2006 third-round pick and a 2007 fourth-round selection to the 49ers for wide receiver Brandon Lloyd. Pending a physical, the deal should be completed before the end of the weekend.

I wouldnt call losing Royal a blow...

Now we can get a TE who is good at...

catching the ball
running after the catch
not shying away from physical contact
not going down after the 1st hit...

Good bye Robert.

I wasn't calling it a blow, I was using the term metaphorically to indicate the action has started...

Glad to hear Royal's is gone.
That a lot of money for a mediocre TE.If Royal's wasn't all that impressive with the TE friendly offense; how will he be in Buffalo with Losman. Sound like an over-price for a blocking TE. Good luck Robert and hey, nice payday.......

I wanted to get rid of him to, but maybe he has something more apparent to them than me. More power to him. Do we go ahead with Johnson or pick up someone else. Please, no more journeymen at the position. I had rather develop Johnson if we can't grab a guy of real potential as a pass catcher'blocker.

I think we will draft a TE in the 2nd round to replace Royal(if we keep our pick). My guess is we will take Fasano or Byrd, because they have good blocking skills.

Also, Dan Campbell from the Cowboys might be a decent option
5 in a row or we don't go!

There's something I've noticed, a pattern, and many of you surely have, too. It's not that unexpected, it's typical, yet it's still remarkable: As soon as a player leaves a team, whether through Free Agency, Trade or other, people start dumping on the player - Sort of a "good ridance" kind of thing. In most cases I would wager that if that same player immediately turned around and signed with their team, many of these same people would write things like "good solid team player" or "nice pickup".

I'm not saying that Royal (in this instance) didn't have his limitations, but (I say) give it, or him, a break. Fanatics.

I used to think the same thing, ATV, but noticed that pretty much every player has his supporters and his detractors. if someone gets cut, the detractors will post a "good riddance." But I'm not sure that people are actually changing their opinions, just voicing long held notions...

Ive voiced my displeasure for Royal wayyyy before this, Arrington too. Although I know what you mean, I just wanted to clarify for myself. One person who left i never dumped on was Chump.

Well it looks like you just did. I have the ultimate respect for Champ and the way he handled the situation of him leaving DC.

Great for you. I never said anything negative about Chumps ability to play.

You're wrong. We've all been busting on Royal long before he was traded. Once a brick-handed chump, always a brick-handed chump.

Good riddance, Robert.

Isn't the whole purpose of Hogs.net, to stimulate interesting and colorful threads, for debate/conversation/thinking. We all have one common interest, "The Skins" and we all have various opinions of the players that they employ and that we cheer-on. These discussions/debates and yes sometimes arguments are based on the simple fact, that football and especially the Redskins, are our passion. If negative OPINIONS and positive support for one player, or another is bothersome, simple debate the matter/facts. Personal attacks and bickering have gotten, quite annoying. P.S.
How about that Royal's contact?

At least you get it.

The Bills are over paying for a guy who wouldn't have gotten much attention from anyone else or the team he was leaving. There seems to be a lot of over paying going on today

Wow! Talk about over paying......The brownies dished out a total of 72 millon, over 6 years for two player. Shaffer was rated by ESPN as only the 26th best player in free agency! Bently is a gem, but Cleveland has many more holes to fill and liocking up that amount on only 2 players is again, over paying.

Although Royal's contributions to the Redskins was minimal, I am happy to see that he got such a lucrative contract, for someone of his abilities. The size of the contract is pretty hard to figure though..

Whoa, 10 Million for 5 years on Robert Royal!

I'm happy we didn't pay more than that.

Ryan Clark on the other hand is worth that much money to me.

This is a good trade for both Royal and the Redskins.

He might fluorish in a different system. The Skins get to pick a TE that TRULY plays Joe Gibbs and Saunders' game!

Win-Win if you ask me.

As for the Bills, well, I am not sure. They are supposed to be poor and low-revenue... I do not know about spending that much money and over-paying.

Royal Gone, Tight End signs with Bills

Post by Skinsfan55 »

Meantime, tight end Robert Royal, an unrestricted free agent, signed with Buffalo on Saturday. The Redskins now have seven unrestricted free agents and three restricted free agents this year.

Good riddance I say, just thought someone would like to know.

Agree ... one that can block (Royal's strength) and catch (Royal's big weakness)

Buh-bye, RR. Still can't get the image of all those blown opportunities out of my head.
Good luck in Buffalo, where they throw TE's to the wolves.
