With the NFL's new labor agreement in place, the Washington Redskins are prepared to make a significant foray into free agency when the period to sign players is expected to open at 12:01 a.m. Saturday.
The extension between the league and its players created room under the cap for the Redskins, opened up avenues for further contract restructuring and should aid the club's ability to re-sign several of its players.
Had the labor talks failed, the Redskins faced the prospect of a $94.5 million salary cap and little chance of acquiring significant free agents. But now the cap is expected to be set at roughly $102 million, allowing Coach Joe Gibbs to seek help at wide receiver, defensive end, linebacker, along the offensive line and, perhaps, at kicker and punter. Washington also stands to add an additional $1.7 million in cap space with the trade of backup quarterback Patrick Ramsey -- who visited the New York Jets yesterday and has visits planned with Detroit and Miami, according to a source -- and will likely release a handful of players today.
