Lavar a free agent?

Lavar seemed to be making a comeback at the end of the season. Plus, he was making some of the hits he was known for. I'm going to mis him as a skin, but realisticly this is better for the cap issue.

One of the sadest days I can remember as a Redskin fan. While at times over the last year or two Lavar's actions and words didn't always add up, as it seems to be the case here, it was clear that in his heart he always loved the Redskins and especially the Redskin fans. I still am curious to hear Lavar's account of what happened and why he did not want to restructure, but in any event this one is going to hurt for quite a while.

On a side note, something like this makes me hope all the more that a new CBA is not put into place. Quite frankly, from a fan's perspective the current system of free agency and the hard cap sucks. Yes, we now have the all-sought after notion of parity, but at what cost. Personally, I'd take the values of loyalty and continuity over franchises being built up and torn down on an annual basis. Instead, as this case proves it doesn't really do a fan any good to actually identify with any of the players on his favorite team because they could be out the door at almost any moment. Yes, I am confident that Williams will be able to figure out a way to fill Lavar's void, but that will not take away from the loss that his departures means for the Redskins community.

Lavar Arrington is forever destined to be a bridesmaid, not a centerpiece. Not All-Pro, but "All-Po", as in "potential".
I'm sorry, because I did feel good seeing him on the field...but I was always waiting for him to botch an assignment.
We did what we did largely without him. Some will point to the INT in Tampa, but the getting there had little to do with Lavar Arrington, and we'll be fine. McCune wil get his shot now if Holdman isn't up to it.

The fact that this saves us some money on the cap and that he has barely played the last two years makes this hurt a little less, but it still sucks to see him let go.

Hopefully he goes to so AFC team, Chargers maybe?!?!

Let me be the 1st of many to say "Lavar sucked anyway...!". :lol:

Honestly, who really cares? We were all hoping he'd have a great offseason and come back at 100% but thats not going to happen now.

With him paying out the contract, does that mean we'll be free of his cap burden forever? If so then Im happy he's gone. Lets get rid of that dead money.

He's gone and so is his cap #.

TC pointed out he refused to re-do his contract, well I don't think we would have saved $4.2M on a restructure.

I happy that he gave money back to get out of here, not many players would have given money back when all the talk had been about them being released.

I am sorry that it ended this way, but this reinforces my gut instinct that super high draft picks are not the way to go, an huge bet-the-franchise contracts are not the way to go either.

Heath Shuler, Desmond Howard, Lavar Arrington . . . In each case I would rather have traded the draft pick for a solid player who didn't cost a fortune.

It is a relief that the drama is over, and that it seemed to work out as well as could be hoped for for both sides . . . .

I definately understand where you're coming from but I think this situation has more to do with the past than the present and nothing about his draft status.

Lavar came in here as the successor to Darrell Green aka "Mr. Redskin" and he was a wild success. However, when Gibbs came back the "face" of the organization changed, Gibbs was now the head honcho. The defense had a SPECTACULAR year without Lavar, a converted safety EXCELLED in his position, Sean Taylor was a beast and Marcus Washington won hearts and the medias praise....

Where was Lavar in all of this? He was sad and loney, he felt left out. He was no longer important and thats when he started lashing out.

Lets not forget to mention that his AGENT didn't review his contract he was jipped $5 million. Of course his agent didn't admit to it right away and Lavar attacked the team, the coaches and the owner. He was a distraction to the team during its most critical games (eagles game 2).

I think with Lavar could happen to anyone who becomes the face of the team. That person isn't always a high draft pick.

NFL salaries are not gauranteed, so could we have just cut him loose and paid him nothing for the same thing? and also should they of tried to trade him and get something for him? Just wondering! Getting a $4.2 mill refund on him is very nice but I'm still curious about the above questions.

Who can afford him right now because most teams are over the cap and he's not gonna be cheap. The cap will only be 94.5 this year remember. Green bay maybe

I was going to say that, I think he'll end up in Pittsburgh, Denver or K.C.

I believe it was a washington post article a while ago that stated the chargers would be a likely destination considering his relationship with marty.

Lavar's salary was just a little more than half a mil. The Cap # comes from the prorated signing bonus (that he has been paid but still not accounted for on the cap). Cutting him would have accelerated the proration and removed this years base salary (His cap hit would have went up $800K).
A trade would have effected the cap just like cutting him.

Let's not underestimate the loss (Chris Luva Luva). Who do we have to play the weak side who has not already failed. In my opinion, we now have a monster problem. Last time we lost him, we had Marshall, Pierce, and Washington. Now, we have Mc Cune, Holdman, and Clemons vying for the third spot and no resourses to pick up anybody of real merit from the outside.

Don't you think Gibbs and Williams have a plan? You seem to think they weren't prepared for this. Heck, Williams was no fan of Lamar and you can bet the bank he has a replacement in mind.

I'm sorry he left but I think the defense will be fine. It might take 2 guys to replace him. McCune on run downs and Clemmons on the passing. Now that I think about it the Skins did that last year with Lavar playing the running downs.
I think the Vikings or Card's might be the only one's with the money Lavar is going to want.

Slowly but surely the Washington Redskins are becoming a more "complete" team again. The defensive coaches did a pretty good job last year without Arrington for a lot games. I think that we will continue to see Gibbs and the staff put people on the field that will play together and that suit the schemes that they have.

I am sure that this move was not made without a lot of consideration for not just this position but the whole defensive scheme. This will continue to be an interesting off-season and I kind of hope an agreement gets done soon as I'd like to have these guys adjusting to a $115 mill cap (or more) than a $94.5 mill cap.

Good luck LaVar - we enjoyed the ride while it lasted. It really does not matter where he plays, he's a player and he really is only as good as the rest of the guys around him. He's not as good comparably now as he was at college but then again this is the NFL and a lot of guys look so great at college and never really make it to the same level comparably when they get to the NFL. Like tcwest said he has always been "all po" and now it looks like he will be whatever he decides elsewhere.

I think we will be a better D overall this year.
