LAVAR NO LONGER A SKIN

Post by SkinzCanes »

Chris Mortenson just reported on Sports Center that the Redskins allowed Lavar to buyout his contract for $4 million and become a free agent. Looks like we have another position to fill and that might not be so easy with our salary cap problems.

Hopefully because he payed us 4 mill, that will make it so that we actually save a bunch of money on the cap....

Well if he is not going to play for us, I hope he retires.
It would be weird seeing him play for another team.

It really sucks that we now have another hole to fill for next season. Holdman was totally innefective when he started last season so we are going to need to find a new starter.

Yeah, go to ESPN News, and in that stupid little box in the bottom right hand corner it says "LaVar Arrington wavied by Redskins"...

Man, I'm really bummed out right now. I never trully thought we would cut him, I mean, he's so cool...

Ugh... I'm just really sad right now...

Lavar who?

I won't be one to claim that he sucked now that he's leaving town--but think about it. He had a few good seasons with us, put in some heart to the game, and is gone now. Kind of an interesting character while he was here, too much drama, but fun to watch when he was at his best. Not one of the greatest Redskins of all time, but not bad either.

Thanks for the memories, Lavar, and good luck wherever you land (unless it's with the Giants, Cowboys, or Eagles. . .)

Three-time Pro Bowler LaVar Arrington of the Washington Redskins has reached an agreement with the team, with the assistance of his agents Carl and Kevin Poston, to become a free agent and provide the Redskins with much-needed salary cap relief.
Head coach Joe Gibbs is scheduled to address Arrington's release at 12 noon ET on Monday.

For Arrington, the release ends a six-year run in Washington. He was drafted by the Redskins with the second overall pick in the 2000 NFL Draft.

Arrington became one of the NFL's top linebackers one year later, recording 100-plus tackles from 2001-03 and earning Pro Bowl trips each of those years. In 2004, he suffered a knee injury that sidelined him most of the season.

Last season, Arrington gradually returned from the injury and earned back his starting assignment in Week 9. He started six of the last eight games, plus both playoff games, and finished with 53 tackles (45 solo).

For his career, Arrington has logged 467 tackles (335 solo), 22.5 sacks, 11 forced fumbles, seven fumble recoveries and three interceptions.

His signature play as a Redskin may be the game-changing interception he recorded against Carolina on Oct. 21, 2001, when he raced 67 yards for a touchdown. The play helped turn around the Redskins season that year and elevated Arrington's status as an elite player.

Arrington's departure also creates an opening for a starting job at the weak-side linebacker spot.

Even so that it will save us Cap space, I'm still bummed out.

Post by skins2357 »

ok so by now everyone knows Lavar is gone. Yea it sucks but we will get over it. I love Lavar as much as anyone but if you think about it, 2 years ago he didnt play and we had one of the top defenses in the NFL, last year he was a backup for most of the year and again our defense wasnt in that bad of ahape. The way I look at it, we just saved a bundle of cap room on a guy who is more valuable to us fans bc we like him than he is on the field. That being said this isnt a Lava post so moderaters plaease dont put this one with the others. This is a pro- McCune post. As most of you remember last year we drafted McCune out of Louisville. I dont know if you guys payed attention last year to special teams but he was a monster. Not only that but he is a beast. I am really excited that we have a spot for him now. This is a quote I got off redskins.com. "The Redskins have several linebackers who could move into the role, including second-year player Robert McCune. Washington drafted McCune in the fifth round of the 2005 NFL Draft." I am pretty curious what will happen here with McCune!!! Thoughts???

The young Arrington was a beast. The old Arrington turned into among other things a whiner, a prima donna and basically he lost strength to the point he couldn't tackle TE's in the open field i.e. Jeremy Shockey. Good Riddance thanx for nothing.

This will take some getting used to but it will be nice to have less drama.

Good luck wherever you go, LaVar.

We save about $4.2 million by releasing him.

LaVar Arrington will become a free agent after agreeing Sunday night to pay the Washington Redskins over $4 million in cash to get out of his contract with the team. As part of the deal, the Redskins have placed Arrington on waivers.

A team source said that the move would have been made irrespective of any delay in the waiver deadline Sunday evening.

Over the last few days, the Redskins have asked several veterans to restructure their contracts so that the team could get under the salary cap. Arrington was the only Redskins player who refused to rework his deal, The Associated Press reported.

Arrington had a $12.045 million cap number and was due a $6.5 million roster bonus. By taking the money, the Redskins will save approximately $4.2 million with his release. They entered Sunday $17.7 million over the salary cap.

In January, the NFL Players Association filed a formal complaint seeking disciplinary action against Carl Poston, Arrington's agent, for "neglect" in negotiating Arrington's contract near the end of the 2003 season, union and league sources told ESPN's Chris Mortensen. The "neglect" had to do with Arrington's $6.5 million bonus.

Arrington did not see much playing time early in the 2005 season as he worked his way back from offseason knee surgery. The former Penn State standout became disgruntled over his diminished role, though it is unclear whether those feelings have played a part in the current negotiations. The three-time Pro Bowl linebacker regained his starting job against Philadelphia on Nov. 6.

Arrington played in 11 regular season games for Washington in 2005, recording 47 tackles. He also played in the team's two postseason games, and had 12 tackles.

Actually before Lavar came back this past season our D was giving up huge plays to that side of the field in justabout every game (Seattle, Denver, KC games). Holdman simply couldn't cut it at the outside linebacker position and the only real impact he had was a negative one. Sentimentally I wish we could have kept Lavar because he was one of my favorite Redskins. If, however, we can find an adequate replacement at a decent price then this could turn out to be a good move. However, with our salary cap problems that could be difficult to do and I for one don't think that McCune is the answer at that position.

I'm glad this happened, this really helped the Skins a bunch, he was way over paid. Washington and Marshall are just as good or better and make less.
