According to all the reports Portis, Springs, Randy Thomas and others have restructured their contracts to help the Team with its Cap problems. So, this wont be as bad as everyone thought.
What a bunch of Stand up guys. Way to take one for the TEAM! Gibbs can really pick players. This reminds me of the 1987 team that was the only team that did not have a single player who crossed the picket line. They stuck together and did what was right for the team - and went on to win Superbowl 22.
I dont pretend to understand all of the Cap stuff but I am sure Snyder will do right by these guys in the 2007 uncapped year.

Unselfish. It will be a lot easier to get under the 92 mill cap this comming year then. But like you said if there is a uncaped year in 07 I'm sure there is a understanding that Synder will throw those guys a bone. Even with this 3 day exteneion a deal will not get done the owners are just buying a little more time to figure out who to cut, I'd bet on it.

Yep, From what I've read and heard:

Jansen, Wynn, Springs, Thomas and Portis have all renegotiated and Arrington was in talks (meaning they don't plan to cut him no matter how many times ESPN says they are).

Hey, guys, don't get me wrong. I'm glad these guys restructured, but let's not make them out to be saints. Restructurings always benefit the player by giving them more guaranteed money.

It's not like these guys are taking less money to help out the team, they're benefitting as well.

Of course they're benefiting as well, but noone made them do it. Take a look at the other teams. They might have had one player or at the most two restructure their contract we had nine......I think thats right......Might have been eight. I lost count. Whatever the case they did it so our TEAM can stay together. And thank God. We have been needing team chemistry and continuity for a real long time now.

I just can't wait to here what the media has to say about this. I'm sure in a couple of days we're gonna here Snyder getting ripped again the media. They thought for sure that we were in cap hell this year! And once again Synder made them look stupid.

In the scope of things, they are all millionaires, but they didnt HAVE to do anything - but they did for the TEAM!

Several players have agreed to restructure their contracts to help the Washington Redskins get under the NFL's salary cap, maneuvers that would be voided if the league and players' union were to reach agreement on a new labor deal by Sunday.

Players known to have agreed to reworked contracts include quarterback Mark Brunell, running back Clinton Portis, cornerback Shawn Springs, guard Randy Thomas and defensive end Renaldo Wynn. The Redskins have negotiated with other players as well, including tackle Jon Jansen and linebacker LaVar Arrington, but the final status of those talks could not be confirmed.

The Redskins, like all NFL teams, had faced a 10 p.m. deadline yesterday for cap compliance. The NFL agreed to push that back three days, however, giving the league and union more time to negotiate a contract extension to the labor agreement that could add about $10 million to the salary cap figure.

A labor agreement and new collective bargaining agreement would push the cap from $94.5 million to as high as $108 million; the Redskins entered yesterday with $115.4 million committed to their 51 highest-paid players in 2006. There is a group of players the team could opt to cut regardless of a new labor agreement, but as of yesterday the team had made no cuts official and would likely not release anyone until Sunday's 6 p.m. cutoff for cap compliance.

Team officials were working yesterday to finalize deals, with director of football administration Eric Schaffer leading talks with agents, and were prepared to wait until 10 p.m. to make cuts.

A new CBA would allow the team to make fewer drastic restructurings, easily clear cap space and address needs at wide receiver and defensive end, for instance, in free agency. Several players who agreed to contract changes said they did so at least in part to put the team in position to retain its depth and continue progressing after reaching the playoffs for the first time since 1999.

"The good thing is as a player, you're about the team and you try to do the best to help the team," Springs said. "And in a situation like this, it's a win-win for a lot of us. You're not getting cut, you're getting restructured and there's probably a good chance it'll be a win-win for you. We'll see next year what happens to the Redskins."

Thomas said: "I helped out as much as I could. Anything to get us where we want to be going. I restructured my deal this year to save us some cap room, and I know other guys did, too."

In the case of several contracts, the Redskins in essence agreed to guarantee multiple years of a contract, then prorate that money for cap purposes as a signing bonus. Later years of a contract were then voided, according to sources with knowledge of the situation, which would allow someone like Portis, for instance, to become a free agent after the 2008 season, while receiving significant additional payments in 2007 and 2008. Even then, the Redskins could re-sign such players, and all of this would be moot with a new CBA. Brunell's move alone would save about $1.8 million in cap space, sources said.

A new CBA would also allow the Redskins to prorate about $20 million in 2006 roster bonuses, saving the team $15 million in cap space; they would limit any cuts and leave ample room to re-sign key free agents like starting safety Ryan Clark, starting tight end Robert Royal, defensive lineman Demetric Evans and special teams player Rock Cartwright, as well as acquire talent from elsewhere.

Some players, like backup quarterback Patrick Ramsey, defensive tackle Brandon Noble, punter Tom Tupa, cornerback Walt Harris, center Cory Raymer and safety Matt Bowen, were expected to be cut regardless of the labor situation, but those moves could be delayed with a new CBA (trade talks involving Ramsey can now continue).

While players yesterday were concerned with the overall labor situation, they were more occupied with whether it would break the team's momentum after a strong season.

"You definitely think about that," linebacker Marcus Washington said, "and that's one of the things you kind of hate about the NFL, just because there's only so much money you get to give players and sometimes you can't keep everybody you want or everyone you need and guys go other places and get better deals. It was the same way with me and the Colts. Hopefully, we can keep everybody. We've been pretty good with keeping our nucleus together, guys who really make a difference with this team."

Nice that Washington Post is saying the same people will be cut as ESPN. Funny they also said Brunnell would NEVER restructure his contract yet he did. Hmmmmmmm nice reliable source to believe. :roll:

Me too, I'm sure we'll know in a few days. If they extent the cap to 108 then were not way over and I am sure we'll also still cut a few players so I think we'll be under easily with a little room to sign a couple of free agents and draftees.

We'll be in great shape if the CBA is extended, but we will still be fine if its not..we just won't be able to pick up any of the hot talent on the Free Agent market.

Just what tells you what kind of guy lavar arrington is. I for one thought how they treated Lavar and used him was really stupid. why was he seating on the bench on 3rd down when we needed a pass rush on our DL?? I think this is the 3rd time Lavar has re-done his contract to help out the Redskins, and then Synder turns his back on him and treats him like *sh$t*. Lavar is a bigger man then I because I would of told the Redskins to kiss my ass and Waive me after this past years treatment.

I agree with Hogster on the CBA comment. If we get a new CBA the Redskins will be breathing ALOT easier and with all prepartions that are beinng made for a 95 million dollar cap 105 will seem like a cakewalk for them. These core players we have are setting an unbeliavable tone for this season..Its really special and it really shows how special Gibbs is and what he has taught these guys.

Thats not always the case! Sometimes they have their entire bonus(which was to be paid all this year) spread out over several years

i think dan snyder just put a lot of money towards them in 2007 with the uncapped season prb. Good thing for the uncapped season or else we would be screwed

By restructuring, they are also allowing role players who would have been surely cut if there is no new cba in place, keep their income. If they chose to not restructure many of those role players would have to take drastic pay cuts or lose their income entirely.

Im hope Arrington can do the same thing. What about Brunell? Would restructuring his contract help the team? He gets paid a heck of alot of money and hes only gonna be around a few more years.
