Anybody else starting to feel like the Post is right about as often as EatSPN?

Without knowing the exact details of Brunell's restructure... it's impossible to know what the exact cap savings is... but for a rough guestimate...

He had 4M in base salary scheduled for 2006 PLUS $1.433M in signing bonus pro-ration for a total of $5.433M in cap hit.

League minimum for a 10+ year vet is $770K in 2006, so presume that the Skins would try and knock his salary down to that $770K and put the remaining $3.23M in bonus money over the remainder of the contract (4 more years)

So... then his cap number for this year would be as follows...

$770K +
$1.433M (previous Signing bonus money)
$808K (new signing bonus money --> $3.23M / 4 years left)

= $3.011M cap hit this year

WHICH EQUALS A CAP SAVINGS OF ABOUT $2.42M

... I'm pretty sure that even though he has 5 years left on his contract that they can only pro-rate bonuses over 4 of those years due to the uncapped year... if I'm wrong on that and they can use the whole 5 years, then his cap hit this year would drop an additional $160K or so as his bonus money for this year would be $646K and not $808K... so the cap savings would be about $2.58M.

Hope that's a decent guestimate.

Relax, Joe has been telling us HE has a "worst case" plan and he doesn't seem to be uptight. Knowing how he has worked his plan in the past I would think he has done his homework and knows who will work with the team to meet the cap requirements.

This is as team we can sure be proud of. To the doubters shame on you. Joe Gibbs is in charge of this team. Want to build a winning franchise? Hire Joe Gibbs. Players and coaches made similar moves in New England to keep those teams together for a few years.

He already agreed to redone his contract but had he not he would have cost more on the cap if he had been cut

ASHBURN, Va. (March 1, 2006) -- Washington quarterback Mark Brunell has agreed in principle to restructure his contract, pending the NFL's negotiations for a new collective bargaining agreement.

Mark Brunell has agreed in principle to restructure his deal with Washington.
"Mark and other team members have worked cooperatively with us in renegotiations, approaching the matter like the veterans and team leaders that they are," Redskins coach Joe Gibbs said.

Like all NFL teams, the Redskins are in flux with their free agency plans because of the last-minute collective bargaining talks. If no agreement is reached, Washington will have to make some $20 million in cuts March 2 to get below the 2006 salary cap.

If an agreement is reached, the Redskins will have to make fewer cuts because the cap will be substantially higher. Brunell and the other veterans -- whom Gibbs did not name -- will not sign their new deals until there is definitive word on the labor situation.

Free agency begins March 3. The Redskins have been one of the most active teams on the opening day of free agency under owner Dan Snyder, but the team will have limited options if it is forced to make wholesale cuts.
