Electric Football

Post by Skinsfan55 »

Anyone remember the old electric football games where you has 11 plastic men on your team and a friend has 11 plastic figures on your team and they buzzed across a metal player field?

I used to play with my dad's set and then I got my own when I was a kid (the Steelers and Cowboys were in the Superbowl that year and I got it for my birthday I think...)

I collected some teams, played for a few years but mostly it's been stuck in my closet for a while...

Well I just read an article on ESPN.com where they talked about the rebirth of Electric Football and how it's as big as ever.

My birthday's coming up so my folks are visiting me at school and I asked them to bring my game along with them, I'm pretty pumped and am thinking about starting a club here at school.

Anyone else remember this game?

LOL.....Hell yeah I remember that. My friend (a die-hard Cowboy fan) had that when we were kids. There was really no strategy to it. You just hoped the vibrations shook the players in your favor.

He also had an eight inch plastic FG kicker. When you push his head down, his leg would kick a plastic football. The harder you hit his head, the harder he would kick the ball. I actually broke it. That was like over 20 years ago  .
Let us all gather around and drink the Cooley-Aid of the Redskins.

I think it was probably the worst football game ever made. Me and my cousin bought it at a yardsale one time for a couple of dollars thinking it would be fun, but when we plugged it in we realized we had no control over the game and threw it away shortly. Awful game.

Wow, are you guys serious?

You must have gotten a bum board or some bases that worked incorrectly.

That game is like electric chess.

It's easily the most realistic and strategy based board game ever.

Whoah, you've caught my ears. Can you explain how the strategy works?

Well, it works a lot like regular football...

You have 11 guys on each side and you set them in a football formation (you're the coach, you can set anything you like as long as 7 guys are on the LOS and the other rules of football are followed.)

A lot of the strategy comes in the form of tweaking and TTC bases (bases that you can turn a dial on and have a player run straight, curve left, curve extreme left, spin, curve right yada, yada, yada). Tweaking is hard to explain if you've never seen a base before.

The 11 players on your team are placed on bases. These bases have 8 prongs (4 sets of two) or 4 prongs (for TTC bases) in each corner of the rectangular shaped base.

By heating and otherwise manipulating the prongs you can set them to turn, run fast (burn the DB/run by the defense), run slow (let CB run off.wait for blocks to develop) and do pretty much anything you want (some guys even get guards to pull!)

Also, some of the strategy comes in the form of audibles before the play. Certain leagues let you angle a certain number of players. Say you have guys in a pro-set formation and you want the RB to run into the hole between the RG and RT... you can angle him to that hole and the D can only angle a certain ammount of men to that hole (say a DT and a LB.) But it could just be a ruse where you're sending a TE over the middle and now that DT and LB is cleared for you to make the catch.

It's really hard to explain, and I'm sure it's hard to make sense out of that post... but it's a great game with tons of strategy and really works a lot like a football game.

Though I can certainly see how the game would be boring to some if you didn't think you had any control over the players (through playing the game incorrectly or having substandard equpitment.)

Check out http://www.tothehouse.com/ or www.miggle.com for more info. It's an expensive hobby to pick up (unless you find a bargain through e-bay or a garage sale) but think about the cost of videogames!

This post is suspiciously smack like...

Yeah, I drink, but rarely if ever to excess. I've played most of those games (even have been to that site before), but since I turned 21 a large chunk of the thrill behind drinking is gone.

It's good to have a hobby I think, and what's the difference between having a beer or two over a game of Madden 2006 or over a game of Electric Football?

Oh, and I've got a girlfriend, so sometimes I date the palm Sisters... they're just not mine =-o
