HOF Announcement Thread -- Put Monk In!

Post by Irn-Bru »

The official announcement will be made at 2 p.m. today.

WATCH OUR PRESS CONFERENCE FROM DETROIT - TODAY AT 2 PM

The Pro Football Hall of Fame's Class of 2006 will be announced on Saturday (Feb 4th). The Hall's Board of Selectors meet that day in Detroit, home of Super Bowl XL.

Following the meeting, a live press conference will be held starting at 2:00 p.m. ET. Representatives from the accounting firm Deloitte & Touche will hand a sealed envelope to the Hall's Interim Director Ron Dougherty that will include the names of the new enshrinees. Hall of Fame selection bylaws stipulate that the class will include no fewer than three and no more than six.

The announcement press conference will be streamed live on Profootballhof.com beginning at 2:00 p.m. ET. It will also be carried live on NFL Network, ESPNews, and SuperBowl.com.

I'm as nervous now as I was during any game this year. Please let this be Art's year. And it would be nice to have Grimm there beside him.

What they do is announce who made the cuts from 15 to 10 to 6 and then those who got the 80% vote for enshrinement.

That's it. This selection board will NEVER put Monk in.

Irvin didn't make the cut from 10 to 6.

They picked the maximum six:

Aikman, Carson, Madden, Moon, White, Wright.

Two Cowboys, an Eagle and a Giant.

*tsk tsk*

Monk has only one real chance now:

The veterans' committee.

Either that or a good 33% turnover in the board's membership.

And Irvin made the cut down to ten. Amazing.
Warren Moon? First time eligible? Really, I'm stunned. No I'm not. It's exactly what I've come to expect.

If the Hall of Fame doesn't define greatness by the same standards that defined Art Monk as a player and as a man, then the Hall of Fame stands for nothing.

Right or wrong, Moon's selction is probably the first for whom his CFL performance was a factor.

It's still wrong what they're doing to Monk.

It's hard to argue with anyone who got in except Rayfield Wright...I don't see how in anyone's universe he goes before Russ Grim. Grimm was the better lineman, and won more rings. He also protected 3 championship QBs and didn't ride a superstar QB's coattail to any wins.

Art Monk should have went in before Harry Carson...heck Monk should have went in before a lot of people, but I can't believe that Wright goes over Grimm who was clearly the better lineman.

It is obvious that a lot of these old fat sports writers grew up in an era where the Pukes were "americas" team..they obviously have bias towards their players...and are fans.

Frankly, the next best chance for a B&G Day in Canton is Darrell Green.

It reminds me of some other elections we've had recently. People seem more interested in winning the political game than electing someone with competence. I read that the HOF voters are political, that there is some back rubbing, give and take. I can just picture the two SI NY butt-buddies (King, Zimmerman) standing up (again) and frothing at the mouth against Monk and for their Carson (along with however many other NY-centric voters). I guess seeing the Giant's division rival make it the Superbowl so often really wet their pants.

I give up on the sports writers and the NFL in general with regards to giving the skins their due. It's us against the world!! I couldn't vote for Kerry b/c I'm an Obstetrician (tort reform etc.)

HitDocter, you're a gynecologist? Have you been "practicing your love with women"?

Let's keep this on topic, fellas. We all know that neither Republicans nor Democrats are the answer to our nation's health care problems. . . :-"

On an on-topic note, Rod Woodson was on NFL network after the immediate coverage. (I got to watch about an hour of the streaming video after the main press conference). They pulled up a list of candidates that didn't make it, and when asked which name stood out most Woodson said (without hesitation) "Art Monk," and went on to talk about how great he is.

It stinks that Monk didn't get in. BUT, we do have hope because there are people in the media that keep harping about the fact that he isn't in. I think that as long as that persists, that name will keep surfacing in Hall of Fame discussions, and Monk wont' just be forgotten. A fool's hope maybe, but it makes me believe that Monk still has a very good shot of getting in.

Does anyone know the closest that Monk has ever gotten before? Has he been to the final six before, and just not gotten the 80% go ahead?
