Redskins Interested in Ricky Williams
I just saw on the crawl that the Redskins are definately not interested in TO but have expressed an interest in Ricky Williams. What kind of contract does Ricky have? Cap hit? Could this involve Patrick Ramsey?
Looking at Gibbs' #1 issue of "character" I would say Ricky Williams is doable. I know he "quit" but he came back too. It at least seems possible he and Gibbs could have a spiritual meeting of the minds. He is also "intelligent" (Gibbs' #2 criterion), and lord knows he has "talent" (#3 on Gibbs' list).

One of the main reasons he quit was because he was being run into the ground. If we had him spelling Portis it would make both backs more productive and keep them healthier. I kind of like this idea. I actually think that he's one guy who doesn't want to be the #1 anymore. If we trade Ramsey for him and trade Betts for a pick or something I think that works out really well for everyone involved. Also, from all accounts, he has been a model citizen this year.

I'll pass.
I hear you, bro and I tend to agree. On the other hand, I don't know WHY he did it and other than that he seemed to be a stand-up guy. Again, I tend to agree with you. But I have seen T. O.'s bad character week after week and feel I "KNOW" I don't want him whereas with Ricky I only saw this one thing and I don't know why it happened.
Finally, I tend to agree with you and lean toward "No thanks" as well.

I know that was the story that the media spun, but is that true?
Do his teammates begrudge him?
No, not at all.
Don't you think they would if they felt that he had either quit on the team or not re-earned their respect.
I'm not in any way condoning a ricky signing either... I'm just saying that most of you KNOW the relative percentage of truth that is actually reported by the media... do you really think it's any different in Miami?
Ricky's an odd cat... but he came back a humble, more grounded, more centered Ricky... you have to at least respect and acknowledge that. he may not have come 'all the way back' but it's impressive that he was even able to play his way on to the team aftr losing ALL of his mass.
I keep saying this but Joe Gibbs is the EXACT kind of guy that someone like a Ricky Williams needs... someone who will look on and treat him like more than a possession. Gimme a break joe Gibbs would never take a guy like Ricky williams? How on earth did Gibbs EVER put up with having Dexter Manley then? Huh? Do some of you really have no clue just how odd a cat John Riggins was?
You want to look at what Gibbs' influence can do to a player, just look at Mike Sellers. How many of you even remember/know his past issues.
Now he's not only past it, but he's a pillar and leader of the Redskins.
This doesn't mean that character isn't an issue... obviously it is... but it isn't a question of solely character, it's a question of whether or not that character can be harnessed/controlled/changed by Joe... big, big difference.
I'm not saying to go out and grab the guy at any expense but I struggle mightily to see a huge downside to getting Williams in here on a nominal contract as a backup to CP.

Sean Taylor was one of a kind, may he rest in peace.

I am amazed by the sudden pretentiousness some of us have now. We made the playoffs but geez, we need to get better.
Anybody remember Riggins, Manley, Timmy Smith? You can't assemble a team of 53 choir boys. People who make mistakes can still be of good character.
We are the Redskins...We have Sean Taylor....why are we judging all the free agents when we have problems just like any other team.

This makes very little sense to me. Why would we want to pursue Ricky Williams as a back-up? If the Dophins trade him, it will be because they get more than back-up value for him, since Ricky is in essense a back-up there.
I'd rather have Betts as a back-up and save the money/trade bait for positions of need.

Ok let's just make a rumor that he Redskin's want every bad seed available or hell, not even available, in the NFL.

Great News. I heard Lawrence Phillips wants to return to the NFL, too! Woo! Hoo! Sign him up!
Seriously, I hear y'all when you say that Ricky might not be a bad #2; however, I just can't get passed the fact that he just quit. Sure, maybe he's made amends for that. Maybe he's more mature...but he'll have to sell me on that one before I'm won over.

I seriously doubt that we’d bring Ricky in. I don’t see RB being that much of a deficiency especially with how Byner gushes about Nemo. Its decision time with Betts and Rock, I don’t think brining in Ricky is the answer.
RB is one of the positions that can usually just plug someone in as long as you can block and they aren’t a complete failure.

I support this statement big time. There aren't many who can do it without a line. I therefore laugh at anyone who picks Reggie Bush first. He "might" even be the 2nd best NFL back on USC.
... on the other hand, some backs are much better than others at "setting up blocks." Kelvin Bryant comes to mind.

I don't respect a thing about Ricky Williams... he came back for the money and that's it, to avoid repaying the 8 mil he owed... Gibbs isn't messing with team chemistry (or Portis' head) by bringing in Ricky Williams, Ricky Waters, Ricky Lake, or any other controversial Rickys... you can compare him to Riggins or Manley all you want, but it's a different time, adifferent place, and a very different player... not gonna happen...

Okay, so if we loose Ladell Betts to another team and Poris is injured at some point (which is highly likely) then who in the heck becomes our every down back???
Someone answer that question before we get lectured on who has character.
Again I am not advocating the Ricky thing, but people on here are riding a high moral horse all of a sudden when our starting safety is facing a felony.
If Gibbs thinks it's okay..it probably is.

Nice read. Conjures up some good and bad memories. I can agree with Wilbon and Riggins in respect to Ricky laying himself before the team...knowing that only time/consistency can heal old wounds. I also agree that T.O. is a cancer and seems to skew his point of view to the drum of the media. I would welcome you as a Redskins, Ricky.
