Texas A&M Challenging Seahawks Right to 12th Man

Talk about the AFC, NFC, the NFL Draft, College Football... anything football that has no Washington Football Team relevance.

Texas A&M Challenging Seahawks Right to 12th Man

Post by Justice Hog »

Check out this story. Texas A&M is kinda irked that the Seahawks are using THEIR slogan?

Hope noone tells A&M about the Redskins new 12th Man flag!

Interesting, I don't think A&M has a leg to stand on in the matter. Lots of NBA teams have retires #6 for the fans also, but no teams really markets it. I really don't see it being a problem IMO.

Actually they might... the Aggies actually own the name '12th man' and I personally know of a guy who had to change the name of his website because he recived a cease and decist from Texas A&M.

So you never know...

I can't argue the foresight, but there's something just not right about "owning" something that is that commonplace to the most popular game in this country.

Apparently, the bumpkins in College Station weren't aware that the "12th Man" has been a significant part of Seattle's football experience since 1984.

Funny how it's only a big deal when the Seahawks make the Super Bowl.

A&M had 20 years to raise a fuss. Statute of Limitations has long expired.

They're probably just still irritated from watching Texas win the national championship.

I don't know how many of you know this, but as I understand it, part of the requirement to keeping a trademark is that you actively seek to protect it. So, A&M really has no choice but to pursue this matter -- it's pretty easy for them to say they didn't know about them using the phrase before, but it's been national news this year and kind of hard to miss.

Exactly. They'd only own the name if they kept purchasing it's rights.

... which they obviously do.

Funny how they didn't care all of the years Seattle been using it and now that there're in the SB?? I'm sure a "small" donation from Paul Allen would smooth things over!

I consider 12th man things really stupid outside of Texas A&M.

It is so overused...

Doesn't Texas A&M realize that I own the intellectual property rights for "school endorsed slogans that edify team performance"? Those jerks have been profiting off my idea for years, and I demand payment! Excuse me, I've got to go fill out a cease and desist order against those bitter Texans. . .

At first I thought this was retarted, but now I hope A&M wins.

Basically just because I have had enough of the stupid Seacocks and their whinning that noboby likes us.

I mean once I found out that Seattle retired Jersey #12 because of the 12th Man  (how lame is that), well I hope A&M wins just so they have to unretire #12.

Now....like I said in my original post, if A&M is successful with this, do you think it will have any effect on:

Only if the Redskins start selling T-shirts. You don't have to pay to see the flag. It comes free with your ticket.

In that case, they should start giving shirts with the tickets. . .

Don't most teams refer to the fans as the 12th man though? If the rights get issued does everybody else get fined for using it?
