Tight End or Defensive End ??

Post by griffyatl »

Ok, we have a mid range second round draft pick. Do we use that pic on a DE or a TE.

Here is why im saying TE. If the Redskins would of had a quality TE to help stretch the field this year I think the Redskins would of had Home Field Advantage in a playoff game, and probably still playing. People say well we have Cooley for that? Thing is Cooley isn't a TE, he's the starting HB. Robert Royal is our starting TE. Some say that Royal is serviceable. What does serviceable mean, that he can catch 15 passes a year, and drop about 5, get nothing after the catch. There are a lot of quality TE's in this years draft Pope from Georgia is a Man-beast and Byrd from USC would look great in Burgandy and Gold. How great would it be to have a top TE lining up on the other side of Cooley instead of a serviceable TE? Give me Santana Moss, Cooley, Pope or Byrd and that #2 receiver isn't such a headache.

Now for DE, there really aren't to many great DE's in this years draft. The best ones will be taken way before the REdskins choose in the second round. I can tell you this, at the Redskins current pick there will be more highly rated TE's then DE's.

The Redskins do need a pass rusher but thats the only thing they need on defense. On offense we have chance to make this offense something special with a complete TE. Last year Robert Royals made me sick watching him.

To me this is how the Redskins should draft.
TE, DE, WR, OL, TE, DE

Anyways, I would love to hear feedback from all my REdskins faithful of what the Redskins should do.

We could pick up Tony Richardson from KC as a FB, so we can move Sellers from FB to H-Back and move Cooley to TE. With Saunders coming in, maybe Cooley will become the next Gonzo. Allowing us to stretch the field even more because Sellers is more than capable to play H-Back now. Sellers can handle the short passes (as proven with his multiple TDs) and run blocking no problem. Richardson is a proven run blocker and by making those moves we can solve our TE problem. Allowing us to draft a quality DE or WR in the 2nd round.

I say Best Available Player.

If at the time the best player is a DE, then take the DE. However I feel that the best player at the time will be a TE (maybe Dominque Byrd of UCS or Greg Mills from Tulsa)

I want this offense to be truly special. Moving Sellers to fullback and Cooley over to TE wouldn't make that special. Leave Cooley at HB and draft a TE that can make plays. Then no one can double team Moss, and Cooley would be even more wide open.

I think we should take the best available DE with our 2nd rounder but IF, that's a big IF, Maryland TE Vernon Davis is still available, then I would take him over any available DE at that spot.

Vernon's going top ten or worst case scenario dropping into the top 20. We can pretty much write him off our list unless we trade up. However either Pope from Georgia or my personal fave Marcedes Lewis from UCLA might just slip to us.

I think we should consider trading our 2nd Rounder and Pat Ramsey to the Ravens or Miami Dolphins in exchange for the 13th or 16th pick. Then take the best player available there.

If we could somehow pull off that type of trade it would be a miracle. I think that the best we can realistically hope for Ramsey is a 4th or maybe a 3rd rounder if we are lucky.[/quote]

Our scouts were seen chatting with Byrd after practice today at the senior bowl.

Really? That's good news, Byrd is a big player, but he also has speed.

But I know all the DE talk is based towards NC State's Mario Williams, but you know his teamate Manny Lawson...

Image

Dude check out Lawson's Vertical! Now I'm not saying we should take him 2nd round, but the dude's an athlete.

That's pretty impressive for a football player. They say that Sean Taylor has the same type of leaping abiliy, something sick like a mid 30 inch vertical.

Come on.

We've needed a DE for years and it is the far more important position.

actually a Mid 30 Vertical Leap is about average for a WR/DB, Didn't Boss Baily have like a 48 inch Verticle like 3 years ago. I think Sean Taylors Verticle is more in the 40's as well.

This is really dumb. At least we have some DEs who can play even if we don't get much pass rush. What's more, Cooley is going to be used in more of a TE role now that Saunders is around. However, we only have one WR who can contribute at all! We have a much bigger need at WR than any other position! Stating otherwise is silly.

I have never heard of anybody having a 48 inch vertical...not the way the NFL Combine does it from flat footed position with only the lunge allowed to spring yourself up.

Mid to high 30's if pretty high.

WR would be silly. We need help there immediately and there are a number of good one availible this year via free agency. Rookie WRs generally take three years to develope into a real threat, especially those not taken in the 1st round. Take the best availiable TE/DE/OL/CB availiable and adress all other needs in free agency.

I think we need to keep a close eye on Daryl Tapp he has been pretty good in practice he has been giving D'Brickshaw a hard time, and he did the same against him in the regular season. This could be one of those sleeper picks.
Also What is Roderick Wright draft status at one point he was a first round pick?

Last year I really wanted us to get Heath Miller at TE who went to the Steelers, but this year we need to get that young play maker on D. A DE is inevitable here. We have to get one to groom and make into the next Dexter.

First off, I agree with you, but Chris Cooley is already on the same plane as Tony G.

Yes, I do agree with you:) I too believe he is on the same level as Gonzo. I just ment because he's playing H-Back right now and when or if Saunders moves him to TE, that he would then become the next Gonzo for Saunders. I hope that makes sense :hmm:
