Yeah I was in history class, 7th grade when it happened. I remember the whole school was shocked.

I was in fifth grade, and the teacher of our class made a big deal out of the launch and we all sat there and watched it live. We were all shocked.

Of course, it wasn't 24 hours before the "Why is 7-11 better than NASA?" jokes started.

Still a shocking image to this day. A reminder of just how dangerous space travel really is.

We watched it in class too. It was the supposed to be this big moment for the Cable in the Classroom program.

I actually didn't have school that day. All the schools in my county had a teacher's workday, so we were off. Me, my brother and parents were on our way back from a lunch buffet and heard it on the radio. They said it was a flash of light, but didn't know what happened to the shuttle. Then we stopped at a tire store so my dad could get new tires and watched the TV in the lobby. They were still talking like they were not sure if the shuttle was ok or not. I was 13, and remember seeing the video and thought "it looks like it exploded". Sure enough, it did.

I was working at Erol's Video - the Springfield location that had Video and TV sales (anyone out there remember Erol's).

I managed the video store but spent a lot of time in the TV section.

Actually saw it happen live (or so we thought) - we all were sorta - "Gee, was it supposed to do that?" Everyone was just dumbfounded and in shock.

Side note: Watched LiveAid at Erol's as well - and recorded it on my trusty Betamax.

"Why is 7-11 better than NASA?"

"Because 7-11 can get 7-up" (there was 7 astronauts).

Guess you're too young. Back in the day, it seemed like every joke involved 7-11.

There were a ton of tasteless jokes about that. I know some of them. I'm afraid to type them because I don't want to go to hell :D .

Don't worry, Brandy...there is no hell. Laugh away.
I was a senior in high school. My 8th grade teacher was a finalist for that trip, and the district had really put on a show in all the auditoriums showing it live as he added narrative to the action as it unfolded.
I believe he vomited at about 75 seconds.

I'm going to hell anyway...

How many astronauts can you get in a volvo?
Eleven. Two in the front, two in the back, and seven in the ashtray.

What did Christa McCauliffe die from?
Dandruff. They found her head and shoulders on a beach in Florida.

Did you know that Christa McAuliffe was blue eyed?
One blew left and one blew right.

What were Christa McAuliffe's last words?
"What does this big red button do?"

What does NASA stand for?
Need another seven astronauts.

Christa got a degree while she was in space you know?
She went up an English teacher and came down history.

Did you know that NASA has a new space drink?
Ocean Spray - It was their second choice because they couldn't get 7-UP

What do a sea lion, the space shuttle and Tylenol have in common?
They're all looking for a tight seal

:-"

I was a senior in college at the time and was walking out the door to go to school when ABC cut to the tape. It was shocking. The only thing worse was 9/11, that I saw happen live.

That's just wrong, man.
"The biggest misrepresentation there is that [it's because] Dan's got a lot of money. That's not it," Gibbs said. "We've got a rule. Believe me, if we had no rules, Dan would spend some money."
