DENVER -- For all the fans of the NFL's other 28 teams, those teams trying to get to where Pittsburgh and Seattle are going, and where Denver and Carolina tried to go this weekend, here are my shirtpocket notes from the last few, very eventful days:

1. Who do I think is off to the best start for 2006?

Clue: The owner rubs you the wrong way.

Another clue: When I finished interviewing the coach of this team last weekend, he shook my hand, wished me well and handed me a Bible tract.

Another clue: The team has a safety, a really good one, with a phlegm problem.

You've got it. The Washington Redskins. By signing ex-Chiefs offensive coordinator Al Saunders, the choreographer of the league's highest-scoring offense over the last four years, owner Dan Snyder now has spent approximately $4.6 million on Saunders and defensive game-planner/play-caller Gregg Williams -- in 2006 salary alone. An outrageous sum? Not for a man whose team will rake in something like $325 million in 2006. Would you pay a small percent of your gross revenue for the men you believe are the best offensive and defensive play-callers in football? If you don't, you're not trying to win at any cost. For all the times I've killed Snyder over the years for his wasteful spending and jock-sniffing trophy collecting (most notably with the signing of way-past-his-prime Deion Sanders), this, as I said after the Williams signing a couple of weeks ago, is just smart business.

Since Dan Snyder purchased the Redskins there have been many people, fans and media types, that have bashed him for what he has done. Some of the things he has done have been horribly bad, like Deon Sanders, some have turned out bad , like Steve Spurrier, some have been not so bad, like Bruce Smith, and some have been good, like Joe Gibbs. But for all of the name-calling, bad-mouthing and criticisms, Dan Sntder has only tried to do the one thing that all Redskins fans want and that is to get the Redskins back to a place of prominence in the NFL. Dan Snyder deserves some recognition for his efforts.

Thank you Dan Snyder!

Signing Neon was a mistake but I think it is worth pointing out that the Redskins were not the last team to sign him. If Snyder gets ripped for signing him "way past his prime" than the Ravens should be the laughingstock of professional football.

Good article by King. I think that Coach Gibbs will management everything well and delegate as he needs to. My concern is also with how Saunders, Bugel, and Musgrave will co-exist but I suspect that Coach Gibbs will manage this well. The league will take notice of what we are doing here and probably really toughen in our schedule....

One of our Hogs.Net brothern mentioned what happens if Saunders feels that Ramsey is the perfect QB for his offense? Ohhhhhhh....what a tangled web we weave!!!!

Also, is Danny slowly becoming the Steinbrenner of Football? According to Peter King's article,

"owner Dan Snyder now has spent approximately $4.6 million on Saunders and defensive game-planner/play-caller Gregg Williams -- in 2006 salary alone. An outrageous sum? Not for a man whose team will rake in something like $325 million in 2006. Would you pay a small percent of your gross revenue for the men you believe are the best offensive and defensive play-callers in football?"

I mean, is he now making the Redskins Brand the cash cow like the Yankees Brand and will now start spending it on upgrades to organization (i.e. coaches, facilities, marketing)? Since the salary cap won't let him spend so freely on players.

Yea but the Ravens didn't give him a boat load of money including a signing bonus that he didn't earn.

It should not be a concern. Al Saunders is in charge and he knows how to work with others.

He is the offense boss now though. Make no mistake about it. Joe is taking himself out of the picture and he is delegating play calling and other duties to Al. There should not be any confusion.
Daniel Snyder has defined incompetence, failure and greed to true Washington Redskins fans for over a decade and a half. Stay away from football operations !!!

This kind of sucks. Peter King or not, I don't want to see any of these clowns getting on the skins bandwagon already. We seemed to thrive under the radar, getting no respect. This team went out and played every Sunday, unlike previous years where they seem to think games were won mouthing off during the week in the WashPost.

They gave him 4 million to be nickelback and that was after him only playing 7 games in 2004.

Even Joe knows about his heathen ways!!! King needs to repent of his Redskins-bashing ways!!!

Seriously, though, why can't he simply give props without subtly ripping the team, its owner and a player. It's disgusting. Yes, I'm surprised to see King giving props (in his own special way, of course,), but I'm disgusted by his delivery. Sheesh!!!

I guess someone must have paid full price for some of the 70th Anniversary Limited Edition Redskins Coffee a couple of years ago, and he's on a mission to take it out on our team in his columns. Oh well.
Back and better than ever!

I don't care if they have him $10, if the Redskins are foolish for doing it, the Ravens are even moreso. To be a total nerd and qoute Obi-Wan: "Who's the more foolish: The fool, or the fool who follows him?"

What a jerk! Why the backhanded compliment?

You are saying the organization just made a good move and then you slam them in the same space? I thought journalists were supposed to be objective.

What a clown.

I have never known a team spoke about more in the offseason than the actually season. At least this days the moves are good moves.
