I'm psyched about this hiring. What's great about it is that you know, based on the last few years, is that Saunders is a run first offensive coordinator, which is great for us. I'm hoping he can really put into place a good blocking scheme that takes advantage of our size.
What's most exciting of course is that they actually hired an offensive coordinator...i'm feeling real good about the skins right now...

And he's shown he can produce results with both types of backs -- a cutback-type like Holmes and a more straight-ahead type like Johnson.
Its gonna be harder to keep our coaching staff together than it is to keep our team together.
We now have 4 coaches who have had Head Coaching experience. Gibbs, Williams, Bugel, and Saunders.
Saunders has also made a pretty good passing offense out of Trent Green (good), Tony Gonzalez (great) and a pack of questionable wideouts...

One of the reasons we got Jason Campbell was his mental acuity. He learned four offensive systems in his time at Auburn.
He might not be book smart (maybe he is, maybe he isn't) but Jason Campbell knows football. Learning from Al Saunders will only help him.

You're right - I misread the ESPN report. Williams is the one with the 3-year, $7.8 million deal. Sorry.
EDIT: Also, one of the best parts of this signing, in my opinion, is that Gibbs and Saunders both graduated from the Don Coryell school of offense, so it should be a natural fit.
Hey guys, listening to Sirius NFL radio and just a few minutes ago heard that the Redskins hired Al Saunders as the new OC. I heard a 3 year contract.
I'm not sure what you all think but he was the top OC on the market, our offense needs some more work and Gibbs and Snyder go out and get it.
If Saunders can do what he does with KC's wideouts, then we've got a great chance to take another step up in offense this year with ours. I love their running game (who doesn't) and their screen attacks. This should really help our offense' of course so will adding Reggie Wayne when March 3rd rolls around. (Fingers crossed on that one).

KC runs the singleback offense that JG perfected in the 80's. The playbook is likely identical to the REdskins playbook.

Head coaching candidate Al Saunders took himself off the market on Thursday when he signed on as the Redskins new offensive coordinator. Saunders served the same role with the Chiefs over the past five seasons. The Kansas City Star did not know the details of his contract and reported that the Redskins might not officially announce the signing until next week.
Our View
This news comes as a bit of a surprise, as there's been no word of assistant head coach/offense Joe Bugel or offensive coordinator Don Breaux being fired or retiring. Although their offenses look different, Joe Gibbs and Saunders have a similar, Don Coryell background. While we don't expect the Redskins to turn into the Chiefs, Saunders style should help open up the vertical passing game and potentially get Clinton Portis more outside runs and catches. Meanwhile, the Chiefs have lost both Saunders and Dick Vermeil, and we have to wonder if their offense will be as potent in 2006.
I must admit that while everybody was speculating about what coaches the Redskins might lose in the offseason, I was wondering whether there would be any new faces coming the other way. Gibbs has always assembled great staffs, and he's still doing it.
Yes indeed, Saunders is from London - it's great to have a fellow Englishman on the Redskins staff.
Doesn't necessarily mean that any other coaches will be leaving, but you can certainly see that the foundations are being laid for when Gibbs, Breaux and Bugel step down.
you can turn trent green, priest holmes (from baltimore), larry johnson, eddie kennison and that o line into that offense for the past 4 years... well then it's just scary for him to come here... WE WILL BE UNSTOPPABLE!
