Cap Issue may be solved easily.

Post by SkinFan 0-16 or 16-0 »

From waht I am reading in this link our capp issues can be solved in a relatively pain-free manor.

WE could be under the cap 10+ millioin.

Could someone with a decent knowledge of how the salary cap works take a look at this and veirfy whether this is true or not.

If this is true we will be able to keep most of our players (including LaVar) And still have room to get some good players to fill our needs.

Good to see that releasing John Hall and Walt Harris would not only be good for us on the field, but also for our cap health.

How is releasing Harris going to be good for us on the field? Who are you going to get who can do as good a job for less money...espacially without a passrush!

It will help us on the field because everytime he gets on the field he is getting burned...he will be a 10 year vet next season and he has had major knee surgery.

Will Allen
R.W. McQuarters
Juran Bolden
Jamar Fletcher
Hank Poteat
DeShea Townsend
Robert Tate
All of these corners are among experienced UFA's this offseason. If you recall, last year the team tried to address this weakness by bringing in RW McQuarters, but he decided to go to the Lions. The coaches have recognized this need for depth.

With the defense we run, the Nickle corner is literally just like a starter..above and beyond Williams' cliche. When you sign a player to a new contract, you have the discretion to structure the deal so that it doesn't cost as much against the cap in year one. Perfect for us because our cap health in the next couple of years will be markedly better once we clear some dead cap space and depending on what happens with Lavar.

Harris is a weak link. We could accomplish the same result if Harris were to agree to restructure, but frankly I think he is not worth the investment, especially considering his age, performance and injury history.

Walt's good games were mostly buried by his gaffes.
I'm in agreement...but I don't think there's any way we wind up 10 mil under.
Hall...man, too bad we didn't hold onto Novak. I know, I know. We couldn't keep another kicker on because we needed the spot...still, too bad we couldn't.

As far as Hall goes, I suggest we trade Ramsey to teh Jets for Nugent and a draft pick. I'm a Ramsey fan, but I can read between the lines and would like to get something for him. I also know that Nuge didn't have an exceptional year, but the guy will get on track. He was MONEY in college.

It will never happen. We would have to give up Ramsey, Hall and a draft pick just for Nugent. They arn't going to give us a draft pick and Nugent for Ramsey, thats even to say they would even entertain the idea. They spacifically went after a kicker in the offseason because of their kicking woe's the year before with Bryant (I believe thats who it was). He is just going to be released b/c I can't see us getting anything better than a 6th round for him if anything.

Walt isn't a hinderance to this team as much as not having a pass rush is.

Too many people expect perfection. He isn't and never was a shutdown corner. If he was a liability to this team we wouldn't have gone as far as we have. Shawn Springs was injured quite a bit this season yet we still prevailed. I hope you guys dont think Ade Jimoh was the one who picked up Walts slack...

Everyones play is going to elevate once we get a pass rush. Sadly nobody will understand it until they see it for themselves.

Harris is pretty bad. We definitely need to acquire another veteran CB during the offseason.

This is the part of the season where Snyder is actually at his best, especially under Gibbs:

* Hiring coaches, no matter the cost
* Figuring out how to sign people that we need
* Getting free agents
* Doing the last two without ever getting us in cap trouble. Every year the analysts talk about the cap hell that we're headed for; yet somehow we only ever remain in cap purgatory, if you ask me. . .

Are just delaying the end or are we slowly working our way out?

I think the best part of all this is that Snyder has learned to back off and let someone else (Gibbs) make the grocery list.

When the list is done, they hand it to Danny with one instruction -- "get em."

Harris bad?

Post by dlc »

I've seen Harris make more plays than not, and even times he's gotten beat, he was burned, he just didn't make a play on the ball. I've seen Champ Bailey get burned worse. Not to mention that we ask more of our corners than most defenses.

I think Carlos Rogers has lived up to his billing, it just doesn't look like it at times because of how much responsibility our corners play. Walt Harris, Springs, Rogers and Jimoh don't stand out for Pro Bowls because they often get beat trying to support the run, switching responsibility of the snap for blitzes, and being left one on one with no safety. Not to mention they corner blitz more than any other team.

Some "affordable" corner backs mentioned earlier would look a whole lot worse trying to do all these things.

Pro Bowl clarification...

Post by dlc »

I'm not implying all our corners are Pro Bowl caliber. Springs is probably the only one for now (Rogers soon may be). But the fact that he's play nearly flawless besides his injuries the past two years in a defense that leans on that position, shows how little respect the league, and fans, have for what they do.

We know we don't have a 'pass rush' if you only look at sacks. But the stat that is important is QB Passer Rating Against...in that category we lead the league last year.

PLEASE Read the Greg Blache transcript from the chat at the message board over at redskins.com where he addresses all the fans who only judge the pass rush by sack numbers. QB's who faced the Washington defense had the lowest rating in the NFL.

We don't have a double digit sack man, but that doesn't make your reasoning 100 percent true and automatically mean that everyone in our secondary, including Walt Harris is playing great.

Springs, Taylor, Clark, Rogers play consistent. Walt Harris does not...and we could stand to upgrade his position while we search for a pass rusher who fits our physical system.

You and I aren't seeing the same situation. Who is going to be their QB next year? I think everybody agrees that Pennington is done. Cole and Ramsey did have a pretty good connection. It just looks like a good fit to me, as much as I hate to see Ramsey go.
