1991

12th round

Joe Gibbs.

Too many decent WR's at that time I guess. Same reason we got rid of Nate Newton. He was caught up in the numbers game and at the time wasn't up-to-par. Kinda hard for Newton to be a starter on the O-line when we were stocked full of HOF'ers. Newton then went to Dallas and did well.

He's the last WR from that year still playing as far as I know.

Keenan was injured and placed on IR before the start of the 91 season and didn't return.

I could think of another receiver we drafted that I want back... Darnerien McCants. We are still missing the mold of receiver that he fits: tall, durable, and can CATCH.

And from watching him in Philly, he did a good job on special teams this season. He was kind of their Ade Jimoh.

After watching all 16 games (I did quit watching in the 2nd half of the 1st Giants game), I can't imagine a great WR like Wayne wanting to come to our team. You're Reggie Wayne and you can take big bucks and stay with Peyton Manning or get possibly a few more bucks to play for us and have passes thrown by a 36 year old gimpy QB, with a ragged out arm. Manning threw some passes against Pitts that Brunell could only dream of throwing -- in his prime.

I truly believe our problem is less about WRs and more about our QB and the protection we have. You get a good QB on our team (not Brunell), with a good arm and give him time and I think our WRs are good enough. Brunell rarely even looked for our #2 or #3 this year...it was Moss and Cooley (yep, Portis got what, 10 passes in the flat). I know our other WRs were open during the year, I saw them.

Brunell does not scare a defense..we need a guy that makes the defense drop back on their heels in fear of a pass over the heads. You can tell, our opponents, dare us to throw a pass. They crowd the line, they're leaning forward watching for the run. Portis has no running room because they know Brunell can NOT beat with you the pass - on a regular basis. I think he's our biggest problem. I know a lot of people don't believe it, but Ramsey puts more fear into opponents. Yes, he makes more mistakes but I think he opens our offense up to the point that Portis can get more yards.

I just can't imagine someone on the coaching staff doesn't throw that thought out to Gibbs during the offseason. I sure hope someone does! If not, we're going to see an offense next year (even with a stud #2 WR) sputtering way too many times.

I think "our biggest problem" did a decent job getting the ball downfield on some long passes this year. Moss led the league in pass completions over 30+ yards.
I do think we need to be able to make them respect our game plan a little more but this is going to happen by making more options available for our QB.

This team needs some refining but our QB was not "our biggest problem" by a long shot!

While we're on it - our QB needs to execute the game plan and be one of our team leaders. I watched 2 QBs this weekend that are considered very good and both lost. It was the way they played in a loss that I thought was revealing.
Brady stood in there and led his team while Manning IMO just did not play very well. Brady took the hits and tried but Manning looked very unsettled as his team's QB. Give me a QB with character over super talent but no heart.
Until recently, Snyder & Allen have made a lot of really bad decisions - nobody with any sense believes this franchise will get better under their guidance
Snyder's W/L record = 45% (80-96) - Snyder/Allen = 41% (59-84-1)

Wayne would be nice, I say anyone from the "U" Miami. We have 3 key players from the Miami and they seem to work out well. So I say, bring 'em on. On draft day also, we should try to get Hester or Moss.

How much further did the Colts get than us this year?
How much good did that ALMOST perfect season do them?

Brunell got just as far in his 2nd year, with 1 WR and inconsistent offense and a gimpy arm as your highly coveted Colts.

So your point was what again?

What happened when he did throw them the ball though? How many good plays has Jacobs, Thrash, Farris and Brown given us this year at WR? How many has Patten given us? ONE! Exactly one, when he was interfered with at the goaline vs the Eagles. When he has given them the ball they have done nothing with it.

Why does everyone imagine that Patrick has turned into Peyton over the course of this season?
What has Patrick shown us that makes us believe the following?

That he has developed a sense of a closing pocket? (Which can't be taught and he has NEVER had)
That he wont throw into triple coverage...
That he's comfortable in the pocket.
That he can scramble and avoid taking a big hit.

He hasn't show us that. He didn't show it in the preseason/mini camp.
The road to the number 1 pick gaining speed!

I dont think he really has to make that decision, wayne probably wants more money than either the redskins, or the colts can give him, colts just spent all their money on retaining peyton, edgerrin, and marvin, and honestly they dont have alot left for wayne so unless he takes a smaller contract to stay with that team (which he wont, this is a money driven league) then he is going to go to another team where he can be a major part of another offense with a big #1 contract.

Although wayne would be our best option in free agency to complement moss i believe we will have to settle for someone else because we just dont have the cash to draw him here, i dont think it really matters what team, i wouldnt doubt that wayne would goto the 49ers if the price is right.

Wide receiver is not our first concern. I respect everyones opinion but our offensive line needs help. Younger more mobile help. Also if we do not have a down lineman that can get 10 sacks next year. I think we could start heading the other way.

"Brunell is a turd."

lol he is, just look at the Chiefs pic and the look on his face, he let us down in the playoffs and I think he was just glad to be there. In fact when him and Holmgren shook hands our "fearless leader" goes "thank you, thank you , I'm glad to be here" I just don't think Brunell is the competitor that inspires his team and wills his team to win. Between the two I'd take Ramsey.

In Sporting News magazine they also said the Skins might try to go after Seahawks pro bowl guard Steve Hutchinson to replace Dockery, that could be a great pickup but expensive as well. Randle El is real high on my wishlist because of his speed and versatility. Brandon Lloyd would be a good #2 also, but I think SanFran will re-sign him. As for DE's we should look into the relatively cheaper Kalimba Edwards or maybe Robert Mathis which would both tremendously help our pass rush.

Wow! That would be amazing. I was about to say that one of the most glaring holes on this team is at OG. Thomas is as good as there is in the league but Dockery isn't that good and we have no depth. If we could do that and then have Dock as a back-up (an expensive one though) we would be in great shape.

But other low profile guys who I would like to pick up as a solid number 2 are Keenan McCardell who had 2 solid seasons in San Diego, and since he's pretty old I bet we could get him pretty cheap and he could fill the role a couple of years until we pick up a stud young WR in the draft.

But I also think Joe Jurivicious would be a nice pickup. He had an outstanding year in Seatlle and if we could get him at a reasonable price for 2/3 years I think he would be a great pickup.

I don't want Keenan he's too old.

Robert Royal is an awesome blocker and his salary is minimal. If Joe Gibbs thinks he's a quality guy, I'm going to believe it.

Bingo. We can try to upgrade the tight end position without getting rid of a very cost effective player.

As for McCardell, he had a fantastic 2005 season, including the highest touchdown total of his career. He is old, and hopefully that will keep the price down for us. Remember, we can't have young Pro Bowlers at every position.

While a second receiver would be great, I also don't think it's out biggest concern.

I like that campbell is starting, but even if it is Brunell, the offensive woes I think are more about playcalling then talent. I mean, I'm not extremely excited about david patten, but there's no way that you can tell me that he could get open last year with the patriots, and all of a sudden that's disappeared one year later. I'll ask the people who got to go to the games---when you watched the games from the field, did you notice a lot of open skins receivers, or was everyone covered ?

I think that the skins need to address a need that they've needed to address for 10 years...a dominant D-lineman. Our defense is really good, but it still needs one more element to become shutdown...the ability to play heavy pass coverage and still get pressure...you know, for all those 4th quarters where we have a lead, but have tried to kill the clock from the beginning of the 2nd half? Get a D-end who can play, who can generate pressure by himself or free up other guys, and our D is lights out.

As for our offensive problems, our offense looked bad, but it looked bad for a lot of reasons:

1) Offensive Line: our o-line has developed into a nice run blocking line, and what i consider to be an average, to slightly above average, pass blocking line. Chris Samuels, our Pro-Bowler, can't be isolated against elite d-ends (maybe no left tackles can, i'm just saying); after all, look at simeon rice's two games against the skins...with Randy Thomas back, perhaps our running game will improve again, but i think we need to develop an o-line that doesn't require max protect help on every throwing down...

2) Receviers: hey, like I said, I'd love to see a new receiver here...someone like Reggie Wayne would be great, but I really don't want to throw a lot of money at him, and I don't know if he'd do it for less than that. If no one else, I bet the Giants offer him a big deal (it fits so well...Amani is done, Manning to Manning, etc). Moulds would be a nice fit as well, but there's a new head coach in Buffalo (or will be), and he's going to make a decision on Moulds, so who knows. I like the Koren Robinson idea, at least if Coach Gibbs is convinced of his rehab (won't be the first time that Coach Gibbs has controlled an alcoholic)---cheap, fast, bigger than our guys now, etc....

3) Tight end--personally, I don't think this is a problem, and here's why---Manuel H. White Jr. I think that this kid is going to be a beast, and unfortunately has not had the chance to get out there physically (broken leg, i believe), but has had a year to learn the H back position. If he can handle that posiiton, then I think our tight end problems are solved by Chris Cooley. Adding athletes to the offense I think will improve the team as a whole. Of course, I would love Vernon Davis or Leonard Pope, but it's not happening.

4) QB-this has been debated everywhere else, so I'll just say that I'm happy that Campbell is being considered for starter. Having not seen him, I don't know if he'll do better than Brunell, but I do think that Brunell has given us all he can, and that it was pretty good, but not good enough. Thanks for everything Mark, you were a key ingredient in the revival of the redskins, but it's time for the kid to take over...

Chris Cooley is not tight-end, and neither is White. They are both H-Backs in our scheme making them versatile enough to play FB, TE, WR, HB, etc...

We still need to complement Royal with another pass-blocking, receiving TE.
