Tampa Bay - 1999

Post by Justice Hog »

I remember it like it was yesterday.

The Skins enter the playoffs in 1999 and their first game was against the Detriot Lions led by no other than QB Gus Frerotte. This was a home game and, as a season ticket wait lister, I had the opportunity to buy 2 tickets and I went to this game. Great game. Electric fans. Dominating defense. Redskins win. Off to Tampa Bay for Round #2.

Here the Redskins handled the Bucs quite well out of the gate....leading most of the game. Bucs came back and took the lead. Then, with time running out (just over 1 minute left in the game), the Redskins line up for a 50+ yard field goal to win the game and advance to the next opponent. Brett Conway lines up for the kick.....the snap by Dan Turk is low....QB Brad Johnson tries to recover it, perhaps a lucky pass? No way. Skins lose a heart-wrencher.

This year will be pay back in more ways than one.

1) We owe the Bucs for that B.S. Alstott call earlier in the year; and

2) We owe the Bucs for 1999.

Let's go SKINS!!

Every NFL player fears hearing that the Turk wants to see them. In 1999 the Turk (Dan, RIP) came calling with the botched center snap. Thank goodness we now have Ethan Albright as our long snapper. BTW, big ups to Ethan for not having anyone ever mention his name for the last 6 years. We definitley owe some payback to the Bucs this Saturday in Raymond James Stadium. Go Skins!

And we still haven't abused them for the torture they put on Ramsey in 2003.

Really the play of the game was the fumble picked up by Dunn on third down..the Skins had them stopped and Dunn picks up the fumble annd runs for a first down and scored the winning TD on that drive.

JH, you have no idea how much I have been thinking about this game! I was one of the few who spent the night in FEDEX for the first game...
Then I watched my beloved REDSKINS get robbed in the next round...... Alcrap robbed us this year, but that year (99), he did the same....i'm pissed...

I vaguely remeber that game. Surely I wasn't the fan I am now. I didn't start paying A LOT of attention until the end of the Norv Era, a fan with Marty, an fanactic with Spurrier, an addict with Gibbs!

The difference between now an 1999 is that we're a 4th quarter team as of late. We've been closing the game out, sealing them shut and getting stronger as the game goes on.

We finished the 1999 season the same way we started. Botching field goal attempts that would have won the games. Did it in week one after blowing a 21 point lead in the first quarter only to lose in overtime - to Dallas no less!

This time will be different.

I've hated John Lynch ever since that game. The Redskins were cruising til he made that leaping interception that turned the tables. Sure, we could have won the game with a field goal, but the way the momentum was going at the time, I didn't think we were going to make it anyway.

That game was such a heartbreaker. One game away from the NFC Championship.

That was such a depressing day in Redskins history.

We owe Tampa!

I was at that game. I remember the Dunn play vividly. Heartbreaking stuff.

The Redskins were the better team.

Absolutely. We recover King's fumble, and that game was over.
