has anyone considered at all that this is really a story thats being blown out of proportion greatly? for one i have to say that if something like this is actually enough to distract the team on the field then this team doesnt deserve to be in the playoffs

I see what Lavar said as the exact opposite of what a few of you are saying.

This stuff means that he isn't an idiot, that he has a life, that he doesn't have to play (meaning he only plays to help the team), that he wants to help, that he took a stupid decision without letting it destroy his play, and that he can read the writing on the wall (benching one of your best players for a mediocre at best player means your're probably getting rid of him) and so on.

All in all, I think this article shows that he is good, and works too hard to take it all lightly, but still has a decent perspective on life.

Everyone trashing Lavar based on this article is blind. FYI, if this distracts a team, they would have been distracted without it as well.

Per the Washington Post, Arrington regrets the timing of his article, never dismisses it though. Said he would like to remain a Redskin but doesn't see it happening given his salary number for next year. Then why wouldn't he restructure to be here if he likes the area so much?

uhh... if you got the point than you would have realized that it had nothing to do with what you wrote, you'd have realized that it was because you wrote the exact same thing twice. We call it ego-posting but you can think of it as whatever you like.

We call it ego-posting because only ego would dictate to someone that their post was SO important that it needed to be read by everybody twice... with EXACTLY the same wording. Their ego dictates that their opinion is so important that they must put it everywhere so people can see just how important their opinion on the matter is.

In the Times, Arrington said he thinks he will be cut or traded for salary cap reasons and would not mind playing for former Redskins coach Marty Schottenheimer in San Diego.

Arrington actually says he WOULDN"T EVEN GO TO SAN DIEGO in the article.

Wow you guys really boggle me! Lavar is being realistic. How many guys stay with one team their entire career in this day and age? Lavar said he'd like nothing more then to retire a Redskin and I saw the comments made, I whole-heartedly believe him. But the unforunate part of the matter is that it's not within his control. If I'd been asked to step back for a better part of a year on my job and let someone else take the starting role, I'd feel a little bit shakey in my job security as well. Lavar also has a very pregnant wife at home and is going through a huge amount of personal things regarding his new marriage and the birth of his child. So for once can you all not be quite so judgemental?

I am definitely in the mind set that David Elfin did this to stir up fans and controversy prior to one of the biggest games/opportunities this franchise has had in quite some time. Don't let it work.

IMO I think we can assume that by this not being a huge national "story" it is most likely just local media hype by a really desperate idiot.
Whatever! - Gibbs and Williams will ensure that the team (including Arrington) are ready and will play as a team on Sunday.
These last 3 games have been the "setting" that Gibbs thrives in. This is the coach that some of us here were trying to share with those who could not remember.
These games and this sort of pre-game intensity is why Gibbs is in the Hall!

This game, this week, with all that it means, is partly why he came back!



Whoever said "let's get focused" was exactly right and I am sure that Gibbs is driving that home all week.

Chris Samuels, Jon Jansen, Peyton Manning, Mike Vick, Ray Lewis, Urlacher, Tiki, et. al. It's not as uncommon as one might think. Those that are worth staying on their team are most certainly KEPT on their team.

That's just ridiculous. Obviously there are going to be a few exceptions to every rule... you provided a few of them. There are 53 men to each roster, 32 teams... that's about 1700 players... arguing that teams struggle to keep players for their entire careers in the age of free agency is just incredulous.

If your argument were true would someone like Brian Mitchell have ever left the Redskins?

Shhhhhtuff happens... and on top of that, with the draw of the big money... players leave simply for bigger money elsewhere with ever-increasing frequency.

Fred Smoot... Antonio Pierce... great guys when they were here... great team players... as little as 10-15 years ago, you could have been virtually assured that these guys would have been Redskins for their entire career. But the draw of bigger money was too much, and off they went.

I'm not judging them, that's their choice. My point is that the norm has most certainly become for the individual to think only of the contract amount come free agency time... not who made the contract offer. Not in all cases by any means, but certainly as often or more often than not.

The cap system is flawed in that it doesn't REWARD teams cap-wise to retain their players (basketball does - it's one of the few good elements of their CBA).

Sometimes teams have cap problems and have to cut players for economics as well, and sometimes quite contrarily to what they would 'like' to do.


Arguing it seems pointless to me. How many threads have their been about what jersey to buy? Nobody knows because they figure the guy and the number will have moved on in 5 years. Does that come from the stability in teams' rosters?

Argue Lavar's issue individually, but don't over-simplify things by saying that it's a case of want and not want.


In your own words... Finally, there's Marcus Washington, my favorite Skins linebacker. The plus side to his jersey is that, even if he leaves via free agency, I will always have a Skins jersey that says "WASHINGTON" on the name plate.

He already did and took what experts deemed an EXTREMELY fair contract in 2003 when he did so.

If the Redskins can't afford to pay it now... Lavar should re-do it again? How would you feel if your boss came to you every week that your company had a bad week and told you that you needed to take less money this week but we'll make it up to you next year some time. Sure you'd take one for the team, but how many would you take? Obviously it's hard to feel sorry for these multi-million dollar athletes, but they DO work within a union that uses a pay scale much like any other union... it just happens to use really big numbers.

By no means am I condoning prima donna-ism either... obviously players take their 'rights' within the union and the CBA too far.

But the gate swings both ways too... the teams must be held accountable for HOW they throw their money around.

There is fault in both sides in this equation... it's not as black and white as some of you make it out to be.

What makes Lavar expendable is attitude not just $$$$. IMO he doesn't put the team first or can we say he is not a likely "core player". When push comes to shove these type of players are expendable. I believe I just read an article that quoted JG talking about having HEART not just talent to win.

i have one question... im not sure why this is coming to light now and why he is talking about these issues now.. im not sure but i believe i have seen lavar out on most of the defensive snaps in the latter part of the season... am i right or is that false?

I think personally this is just "another one of those stories" mostly what i saw gibbs saying was that he wants to focus on the game in front of him and what i saw arrington saying is that based off of what he saw from the team earlier in the year he believes he wont be here next year and if that is so then he would rather retire than not be a redskin.

Based off of the direct quotes that is what i got from the articles, there is no point in reading what the writer says because honestly he can say whatever he wants in that space between the quotes.

Did any of you see Dick Vermeils response to how many members of the media are already calling his retirement after this season, he questioned how they even managed to become professional members of the media.

We are actually lucky in a sense that this game means so much! He flat out says that in this interview. So the only person who should be held accountable for this turning into anything else is Elfin.

Lavar's appology that I saw was nothing more then being sorry for causing a distraction for his team. Gibbs is probably not happy because of the circumstances in which this story came out.
