David Elfin, of the Washington Times, reports Washington Redskins LB LaVar Arrington knows his days with the Redskins may be coming to an end. Surprisingly, Arrington is not sure he wants to play football for any team after this season. "It's not a given that I'll continue playing if the Redskins get rid of me," Arrington says. "I don't really want to play for anyone else. I don't feel bad about it. I've had my time. I'm capable of doing other things besides football." Arrington says an 18-month dispute over a $6.5 million bonus in the contract extension he signed two years ago poisoned his relationship with team owner Dan Snyder, then the rest of the organization. Arrington is due $12 million in 2006, and he likely will be cut before a July 15 deadline in his contract that calls for him to be paid $6.5 million if he still is on the roster. Arrington still hopes to experience the thrill of a journey into postseason this season. "I'm still a part of this team, and we're having a winning season," he said. "If I get a Super Bowl ring, I could really feel good about leaving this game."

That's the problem with giving one guy too much money. There too much risk. Risk the guy can get hurt. Risk the guy won't fit in with the coaching philosophy. Risk the guy who takes the biggest salary (thereby limiting who else you can sign) will come out and say "it's only a game" and I don't care if I never play football again.

What do you do with Lavar now - play him or rest him? He says that he has fallen out with the whole organisation - does that include the players? If it does I`d go with the ones who want to be Redskins and who want to play football. I`ve long worried that football has been about himself to Lavar - can he really put in for the team when its all on the line? I hope so because we need his talent.

Damn that Synder fool. He deserves the money. He deserves it more than Brunell does. He has been here since his rookie year and all of a sudden a new dude like brunell comes in and gets a big contract and no disputes about his contract. Its bull shi>>> he has served this team well. How is that a guy like brunell who stunk it up a season ago has a huge contract and no probs with management dag nabbit.

If they get rid of Lavar I am seriously gonna shed a tear. Then I am going to write a thousand letters to management about my Beef. He should be our centerpiece on the defense. Our defense is good but If Arrington was utilized correctly it could be a great defense.

Hey, I love LaVar but whatever happened to the "Right now all I'm focused on is beating the Eagles and making the playoffs?" kind of mentalilty? Why focus on this now? What good can possibly come of it?

For an indication of how far the Washington Redskins have come, at least in attitude, consider the words of linebacker LaVar Arrington, who believes the team has earned the right to start thinking big.

Arrington makes a case for the Redskins in a fairly wide-open NFC race, pointing out that they've beaten the conference's top two seeds, Seattle and Chicago, at FedEx Field.

"When you think about all the other things we've had to endure through and accomplish, you realize this is a special group," he said. "It is a group that believes in itself, believes in the mission."

The Redskins beat Chicago, 9-7, in the season opener and Seattle, 20-17 in overtime, on Oct. 2 to start the season 3-0. Seattle has since won 11 straight games, while the Bears have the NFL's best defense. The two are 20-2 in the NFC this season, with the only losses being to the Redskins.

"You're talking about one of the best teams, maybe the best team playing right now in Seattle, and we played very well against them," he said. "You're talking about the Chicago Bears, who are arguably challenging them for that role, and we played pretty well against them. I don't even think we were playing our best football then. I wasn't even on the field then. And I think it'd be even more different if we were. That being said, we've got guys in fairly good health, which we haven't had in past years."
Baby on the Way

While Arrington is excited about the chance to play in the postseason for the first time, he could have a scheduling conflict because his wife is due to give birth to their daughter, Marlee, on Jan. 15. That is the second Sunday of the playoffs and Arrington said doctors may opt to induce labor. The baby's name is the product of compromise, Arrington said. He's a big fan of Bob Marley, the late singer, and his wife's middle name is Lee.

There is also a little tidbit about the Giants having NFC East Champs shirts sent to FedEx last weekend, what moron in the Giants FO let that happen?

I truly believe LA loves being a Redskin he loves living here and with a child on the way he's ready to make D.C. his home. That's rare in today greed filled athlethes. I think there'has never been a better time to approached LA about restructuring his contract??

I wonder what #56 was thinking when he said the following:

Whatever happened to "think before you speak"? Does this guy know the meaning of "no comment"???

As much as we can pin this on Effin for even "going there", Lavar should be held accountable for putting himself in a position to be misconstrued, misinterpreted, misrepresented, misunderstood, etc.

Shame on the media, too, for fishing for this story. Boo, Washington Times. BOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!

Why do I feel like Arrington doesn't know when to be quiet (unless he sits on the bench for a couple of weeks). This type of Hype has surrounded him every since he has been accountable for his actions. Pre Marvin Lewis, he did what he wanted, Post - same thing, until Greg Williams came here. I'm a little tired of hearing him whine about the owner, the money, the coaches, the trainers, the doctors, teh playing time. The only entity he hasn't complained about is the FANS. Guess why, we buy his jerseys! Hey when he signed the lifetime contract to be a Redskin and then settled on the contract dispute instead of letting an arbitrator find ruling, it should have been over. But low and behold now he's upset again. What is with him, maybe it's best to release him?

Welcome to the board!

I love Lavar...I especially love his play on the field....now if he could only stay healthy! I think Lavar is a passionate person who really does love his team. I think that he is a rarity, but he doesn't have any sense of tact at all. Lavar reminds me of Ray Lewis in alot of ways. He plays all out on the field and is extremely vocal on and off the field, but his big mouth can also alienate people in the club house.

I agree. I would love for him to stay here in Washington. I would not like him to be on the "other" side. I do think he is an awsome player, but the negative impact is what I'm worried about. I remember Gary Clark in Gibbs face on the sidelines during Gibbs first years in Washington, and the next thing you know Gary was gone to Arizona. Gibbs has sat down to try to smooth things over for Lavar, when he didn't feel wanted. How many times will Gibbs do this? I don't beleive many.

So now all of a sudden we're placing creedence in the media?

I'm not going to judge this one way or the other because I just don't have the FACTS.

As for Elfin... we're talking abiout a guy who I listened to BRAG incessantly in press row about how scathing and damaging an article he had just written on Sean Taylor was (at training camp). He was proud as punch that he had been so venomous.

I'm not in any way saying that a journalist shouldn't be able to write what he wants...but does that sound like the actions of an impartial journalist? Doesn't being impartial constitute writing without so much judgement?

I'm still waiting for an intelligent answer in ANY of these lavar talks as to how on earth the Redskins will be better off CUTTING him and eating all of the signing bonus. Oh sure he has a huge cap hit next year (and that's Washington's fault, not Lavar's) but cutting him won't shed THAT much cap in 2006 AND it will create a monstrous amount of dead cap in 2007.

You'll find in EVERY DARN ONE of these articles that nobody even addresses the cap... at least not in a manner that denotes having researched the actual concept...

Here's the straight truth for you: L.A is due to make over 12 million next year... over 5M of that is JUST his signing bonus allocution (that's because he is owed $30M in signing bonus still)... so no matter what... we owe lavar about $30M.... and that does NOT include the 6.5M roster bonus in 2006.

How does someone profess that we account for $30M in cap dollars?

Arrington says he intends not only to finish the year's worth of course work he needs for a dual degree from Penn State in counseling and education, but he also wants to pursue a master's and a doctorate.

Thanks BH! I also find it interesting that Arrington is "gone" in a lot of people's minds with no "accounting" included in that topic.

We are lucky to have a place (here at THN) where we can discuss a lot of topics about our team but in so many cases there's a lot of us who have not been paying attention to what has been already "processed" and discussed. There's a lot of "stuff" here people, and a little research (using the "search" key) would be enlightening to say the least and might generate an interesting answer to BH's question.
