Tribute to Santana Moss (and Mitchell, Monk and Clark)

Moss has 1,400 yards receiving on the season, 36 yards short of Bobby Mitchell's 42-year-old franchise record, and was named this week to his first Pro Bowl.

As a measure of the GREAT season Santana Moss is having, I copy below the stats of the BEST years of some of our BEST receivers in history.

Santana has EVERY opportunity to break the record set by the unique Bobby Mitchell in 1963. Remember that Bobby Mitchell did that in 14 games. Santana is doing it in 16.

Somebody asked during the offseason if any CURRENT receiver could become a member of the elite group of best receivers coached by Joe Gibbs. I wish to answer that question with a strong affirmative:

Yes, Santana Moss can become one of the greatest Redskin receivers of all time.

He is a top three reciever right now. Only Steve Smith has had as good a year as he has.

I can't believe this guy is playing this well in our system. We RARELY throw it up there but he's still able to make the big play.
We were SO worried about his size and how he is prone to get injured. He has proved that it's not the body that wins, it's the hard work and heart.

I agree with you RiC but I think that we should also keep in mind that it's not just a result of the talent of Santana Moss which is considerable. This is also the result of good offensive play calling, good offensive blocking, running and passing.
What I'm saying is not meant to take away anything from Santana Moss but to also give credit to some others who we have seen and heard (both here at THN and in the media) are not going to get it done. Our offense is better than most thought.

So this great season by Santana Moss and Clinton Portis is also a credit to the offensive staff and players of the Washington Redskins - not just the great players.

Sure. A great receiver can seldom succeed without a great team all around. But a great team alone does not produce a great receiver by itself. Otherwise, we would have at least TWO and not only ONE great receivers like him that is attracting all the double coverage.

He is having a GREAT season -without- an alternative and similar threat on the other WR side.

I might add that Santana has had a GREAT attitude towards his success.

But this is a tribute to at least one other GREAT Redskin. It took over 40 long years to match Bobby Mitchell's record over 16 games, two more than his season had in 1963. His average yards per Reception was over 20 yards. A small lesson in Redskin history to those youngsters that had not heard the name before.

It is important to know the two names: the name of the record breaker, and the name of the past record holder to fully understand the caliber of the accomplishment.

Hey, I like this guys as much as any of the rest of you, he has played great this year for us, and I think it proves just how much he hated NY. If you recall, all the Jets fans had called hime "sideline" Santana, b/c he would frequently run out of bounds to avoid a hit. This year, I see him cut back into the middle of the field so much more, and is willing to run across the middle of the field and catch passes. Also, I do agree, he has done all this w/ out a main threat, and at times any threat, lined up at the other WR position. But, I will not yet compare him to Art Monk, Gary Clark and these other receivers just yet for the fact that they produced year in and year out. So, in my opinion, let's do it again next year Santana, and then I will put his name next to those.
