At age 64, the toll of another long season has Dallas Cowboys coach Bill Parcells privately contemplating a final retirement -- even as team owner Jerry Jones is urging the coach to sign a contract extension.
Sources tell ESPN's Chris Mortensen that the death of Parcells' brother at midseason is one of the events that has triggered the coach's thoughts of retirement.
If Parcells stays in Dallas, it's because he truly likes the team he has assembled, even though his work is not complete.
The Cowboys (8-6) are coming off a 35-7 humiliation in Washington that marked their third loss in four games. They'll have to recover in time to play Saturday at Carolina (10-4) in a game both teams consider must-win.
The Panthers need to win it to stay in control of the NFC South, where they hold a one-game lead over Tampa Bay. A win and a Buccaneers loss could wrap up the league title for Carolina.
The Cowboys have to win to keep their slim playoff hopes alive. Dallas needs to win its final two regular-season games to have any shot at earning one of the NFC's wild-card spots.
Parcells didn't berate his team after the loss to the Redskins. He figured that approach would only make things worse for a team already feeling bad enough.
"When everybody else is killing them, it would be nice if somebody tried to lift them up," Parcells said. "The week before last they were saying that it was one of the greatest wins we'd had here against Kansas City. Now, and I don't know if this type of thing happens in Charlotte, but West of the Mississippi it's either outhouse or castle."
That sucks, really it does. Bill is a heck of a coach and he is part of the rilvary. The rilvary is only fun when you have two passionate and competent coaches. I think rilvary died because its was not one sided with wins but such a rout in overall coaching ability.
The rivalry needs 2 good coaches and the pukes need a better coach. I hope he stays because he's not doing that good a job anymore.
Until recently, Snyder & Allen have made a lot of really bad decisions - nobody with any sense believes this franchise will get better under their guidance
Snyder's W/L record = 45% (80-96) - Snyder/Allen = 41% (59-84-1)
Sorry to be a spoilsport - but I say let him go. Lets let Dallas founder and search for a good coach for the next 13 years and sweep them most of the years during that time. Time for payback for the past umpteen years of dealing with cowboy fan crap season after season.
Once that is done and we're even up I'm all for the Cowboys getting a decent coach to hel pthe rivalry.
Parcells does not suck as a head coach. Whoever says he sucks is just a biased Redskins fan. If he stays, the Cowboys have a better chance of winning. If he leaves, I don't think that team will be as successful. For that reason, rivalry or not, I hope he leaves.

I agree we would be better off if he retired (until he comes back again ) but I don't see it. BP wouldn't have let this get out the morning of a game the held the teams playoff hopes in the balance plus he blew it off at the post game as he talked about the future.
He was swept by Gibbs this year and that did enough damage to his ego to keep him around at least another year.
I hope he retires and Jerry "the Face" can bring in acoach that has a background with the team with head coaching experience, someone with a ax to grind with the Skins, I hear Norv will be available

He's not going anywhere when he's thisclose to getting the team exactly the way he wants it and improving.

If he's going to be a better coach then I hope he stays. I just think he's not as good as he used to be.
We need the best coaches in the NFC East - we want to be the best because we beat the best. Bring it on.
We are still an improving team - Dallas are a step behind and then come the Giants and the Eagles. The NFC East should be really good next year and we are going to need to be to compete with the Bears. That team is looking very good right now.

I'm not saying Parcells sucks. He was a very good head coach. I don't think he is as good of a coach now which may be due in large part to Bill Belichick having left the nest.
I do say that Parcells is slightly overrated as a head coach. He inherited a top defense, went 10-6, got waxed by the Panthers in the playoffs and followed that up with a 6-10 season. Now he is realizing that all his old tricks like calling a player "she" are not working with today's players. He took a swing at one of his coaches on the sideline..and not a very manly swing at that.
I knew Parcells was different when that one fool..can't remember his name right now.. but he threw his gear at Parcells in practice about 2 years ago and got cut weeks later. If that had happened with Parcells in NY he would have cut him immediately after some of the other players whooped his tail for disrespecting their coach.
Not in Big D though. They probably wanted dude's connect for that good stuff he got high on to get up the courage to assault his coach like that.
After every game, every play & every highlight, I'll always remember #21. RIP Sean.

God, I love that part. Yes, yes it was indeed a total humiliation in which Bled"slow" prayed for mercy being sacked 7 times and Julius Jones' motor was dying at the line of scrimmage. Yes, a total humilitaion.
"The biggest misrepresentation there is that [it's because] Dan's got a lot of money. That's not it," Gibbs said. "We've got a rule. Believe me, if we had no rules, Dan would spend some money."
I sang it in the parking lot after the Dallas game, and I'll sing it now:
Who made Parcells quit?
Skins, Skins, Skins Skins Skins
RIP 21

That "Top D" didn't even finish Top 10 the year before.
The guy you're thinking of is Antonio Bryant. And he was promptly traded for the scrub that is Quincy Morgan. (One disgruntled WR for another). The only reason he didn't get cut was because of his potential, but his TO like attitude is what's holding him back, even in Cleveland.

Well, he won the Biletnikoff as a sophomore, but fell to the 2nd round in 2002 because of those same attitude problems.
From dealings in the past though, I can sure tell you that he fears his momma

his name is antonio bryant i think,he was aWR with dallas at the time.i remember that little episode.
parcells is a heckuva coach ,will he stay or will he go i say he will stay cause with what we did to him will give him areason to come back for more.the rivalry needs him too.
but parcells doesn,t put up with any crap.
and i don,t need to add what joe gibbs means to me either or to us as redskin fans either.truly one of a kind.
From a recent interview - I think he's coming back.
Now I know that this guy says a lot of things that are later proven to be the complete opposite (can you say, BS?) but I think he has unfinished business in D and he will be back for another go-round next year. The pukes are not exactly a huge project (to be competitive) and I think he still wants to be the coach - Just my feeling on it.
