Big Daddy rips Spurrier
The story is more about Wilkinson apologizing for calling Cincinnati a 'racist' city when he was with the Bengals, but there's this quote about the time he was with the Redskins under Spurrier and Lewis:
The defensive tackle also criticized former Redskins coach Steve Spurrier, who went 12-20 in Washington from 2002-03 before quitting. Marvin Lewis was the Redskins' defensive coordinator in 2002, and became the Bengals' head coach the next season.
"Marvin should have been our head coach," Wilkinson, who now plays for Detroit, said Wednesday in a conference call with Cincinnati writers.
"Actually, Marvin was our head coach. We had Steve Spurrier, but Spurrier didn't have a clue how to train and get an NFL team ready. He just didn't have a clue of how to train a team and coach the team and understand what all went into it.
"Marvin did everything. Marvin did everything as a defensive coordinator, but he was able to keep himself humble in the situation and move on after that one year."

I have to try and contain myself here! A player is criticising a coach? Not just any player, but, D. Wilkinson? This guy has obvious credentials? Where does he get off criticising any NFL coach?
I have to slow down and understand that the "media" is examining this fairly!
I think SS was an idiot (as an NFL coach) but I think this is a little distorted! IMO this is just some media idiot trying to make something out of an innocuous statement. Something new from our story hungry media!

Until recently, Snyder & Allen have made a lot of really bad decisions - nobody with any sense believes this franchise will get better under their guidance
Snyder's W/L record = 45% (80-96) - Snyder/Allen = 41% (59-84-1)

obviously you are just in denial as far as what spurrier actually did here. the media isn't twisting anything around here. spurrier got man-handled, bitch-slapped, ass-kicked, and any other word-word combo you can think of.SkinsJock wrote:I have to try and contain myself here! i couldn't agree more with big momma. lewis was running the team. it was obvious. many players have stated this, not just wilkinson. most of the team admits giving up on spurrier, half way through his second season. the best the team looked in the second year was when the o-coord was running the team. not to mention the offense looked better in those game than any spurrier took the liberty of calling.
worst. nfl. coach. EVER.

I thought it was pretty clear that Marvin was running the show, myself.
Can't see how anyone is surprised. Spurrier wanted nothing to do with anything except for designing gimmicky plays that couldn't really be pulled off with the personnel that we had at the time. Heck, he didn't even know most of the names of the people playing for him unless they were deeply involved in the passing game.
Marvin was a huge loss for us, and Cincy's best move ever.
As for Big Daddy, well..I liked him. I liked his attitude.
I especially liked his ability to get himself up and down a flight of stairs at home without seriously injuring himself.
Not everybody could, you know.

I have to agree. Can anyone really be surprised at this? With Marty's people and Marvin Lewis we played better than without Marvin and personnel brought in specifically to fit Spurrier's system.

While I don't think Big Daddy was the best DT we've ever had by any stretch, I thought he was better than the "NFL DPOY" that he lined up beside and compensated for for several years. I also think that had he stayed and played with Corny, we would all like him a lot more than we do.

RIP 21

I agree. We'd have less D-lineman problems right now if Big Daddy was still with us, and people would probably say much nicer things about him if he was still on the team (i.e. the Champ/Chump phenomenon).
Don't know that we could have afforded to pay him what he would have demanded to stay on the team all these years, though.

I remember almost all of the preceding posters, myself included, espousing the glories of Steve Spurrier when he first came to Washington as the head coach. We all had high hopes. Granted, we found out that he had less of a clue than Norv Turner does about being a head coach in the NFL. If you want to see the NFL version of the Fun-n-Gun, watch the Colts. Manning makes it work.
Now on to better things. BEAT DALLAS! Run Moss by Williams about 30 times!!! 30 touchdowns!!!! Rub it in!!!

I'm sorry if it seems that I have any feelings whatsoever about SS. I should make it clear that I am as disapointed as anyone that he was such a disaster - he was an embarrasment to all NFL coaches even the bad ones.
I just feel that Wilkinson was making a point about how good Lewis was as both a coach and a leader and how bad SS was. The media, IMO, took it a little further.
At the same time, I just do not have much time for some of these athletes that think they are bigger than the game. This guy was "all world" coming in and never really reached that potential and he did that through lack of total effort on his part. To me, the guy is a loser and while I wish he could have been better for us, he wasn't! IMO that was because he did not give everything he had - that is not someone that I "listen to". Just think, if this guy had busted his hump and stayed at Cincy, he could now be realizing a lot of personal goals that he will probably never do - because he just does not have "it"!
Sorry if that offends people - I just want everyone who is associated with the Redskins to give 110%. That includes players and coaches and idiots like SS!
