Someone Please Smack Brunell Upside the Head Too...
After a great start to the season Brunell has been mediocre at best since the San Fransisco game. A veteran qb should know better than to throw the ball into double coverage inside the red zone. The first int that he threw today was all on
ey, but the other two were clearly Brunell's fault. Not to mention the fact that his accuracy and velocity have completely deteriorated as the season has gone on. He had Jacobs wide open for a sure td last week, today he had Royal wide-open down the sideline and threw the ball way too high. And what really bugs me most is that he doesn't seem to care when he screws up. Not matter what he does, he just goes to the sideline and sits on the bench and sips his gatorade. I just wish that he would show some emotion sometimes and try to fire up his teammates. He is supposed to be the leader on offense but he never seems to step up and make the big play when we need him too. After the Chargers game he stayed on the field longer than most of our guys and was chatting, smiling, and high-fiving Keenan McCardell...that's not what you expect from your qb after a tough loss. If we are to win out and make a playoff run Mark really needs to step up his game.

I admit that Brunell had a good beginning to the season, AFTER Chicago, but his play has dropped waaay off the charts. The commentators today said that you can't bench a guy because he had a bad half, but Ramsey was benched for fumbling after getting clotheslined. Nice double standard Joe.
I'm not here to start a controversey (again), but I NEVER, even when he was playing well, feel confident or even comfortable with him under center. I sure hope either Ramsey or Campbell step it waaaaay up next preseason to dethrone him.
With that said, I sure hope Brunell can catch some of that magic from earlier and win out. Our D can't do it all.

Hey, the commentators opinion, not Joe's policy!
But I agree that Brunell looks like he is wearing down. He doesn't seem to be moving as well, and his whole game is dependent upon his legs.
He does however manage the games well, and usually doesn't make mistakes. Prior to today's performance he had 16 TD's and 5 Ints....thats a pretty good ratio! Not to mention that he has helped to put us in contention for the playoffs. I remember the last time we were 7-6 and we had a QB Switch...That was the 2000 season debacle!
I'm sticking with Mark.....Just like we should have stcuk with Brad Johnson.

One also must look at the play calling as the season has progressed. In the first 3 games we we're a downfield team that created its oppurtunities downfied from the mid-range passing game (Undefeated at that time may I add, we played the top 2 teams in the NFC in three of those games). But as the season has progressed we have slowly been falling into that more conservative play that had killed us last year and has killed us this year in games. It's not all Brunells fault that his numbers are down, a lot of it is about play calling.

From the Washington Post:
Worst Quarterback: After a torrid first half of the season in which he emerged as one of the league's most efficient quarterbacks, the Redskins' Mark Brunell has regressed into performances such as yesterday's: 18 of 28 for 122 yards with no touchdowns and three interceptions. His rating was 34.2.

He looked very inept today. His lack of arm strength was obvious...no downfield passing game at all. Arizona stacked the line of scrimmage nearly every play. In his defense, he has only one wideout capable of getting open down field. But, his second two picks were awful...thrown right to the defender in double coverage. The first pick bounced of cooley's hands.

I'm afraid that Brunell has injured his hammy again and just like last year he is trying to hide it!!!So there are no reports of this.I'm just going on what I've seen. The fact Brunell hasn't been srambling and doesn't have the same zip on the ball, has got to be a sign of injury problems.I'm glad our running game has been doing better, because our passing game sucks!!!

he does need to make it through this season, however long it lasts!!!
but, please tell me gibbs will be working with campell firsthand, come off-season. i just can't keep putting my hope in brunell.... he is ALMOST done, if not already. retirement isn't far off, and that isn't doing us any good at this point in time.

I was starting to think along the same lines. He hasn't been throwing downfield, even when they appear to be open. I can't remember but a few passes that went 20 yards in the air today.
And his accuracy was off before he hurt his hand.

Amazing how all the blame gets put on the quarterback. Look obviously he had a bad game, but two of those INTS were
ey's fault. The first he tipped and the third he ran outside his route when he should have gone inside. Brunell for all of the bad came out in the second half and did not lose the game for us. Take it in stride gentleman, we need all of the SKins supporters for this next one!!

But it's not just one bad game. He has been bad since the San Fran game. No velocity or accuracy. Today was just a continuation of his downward slide.

He really does not look like he's 100%. I would not be surprised if we hear this in months to come.

last 4 games for brunell in the air:
arz - 122 yds
stl - 156 yds
sd - 194 yds
oak - 155 yds
his first 4 starts:
dal - 291
sea - 226
den - 322
kc - 331
i won't sit here and say that all of this is brunell, the play calling has been 'scared' latley, to say the least. but these are the types of numbers brunell was turning in last year after the injury. makes you wonder if there is something he's hiding. either that, or he's flat out wearing down.

I guess this is Joe's idea of a veteran quarterback... one whose old bones start showing wear down the final stretch.
What to do? Does Brunell know the offense and receivers well enough to take only light work and rest up most of the week? Might not be a bad idea... better that he's got that strength and stamina back than knowing where to put the ball and not being able to get it there.

And yet strangely, we're 2-0 in our efforts to fulfiil our "5 in a row or we don't go" quest. Go figure.
....thanks to a huge rushing performance and a kick return for a td, respectively.

No silly. It was Mark Brunell who handed those balls off and who cheered properly during special teams plays.

The frustrating thing is we still have such a hard time completeing a pass to a wide receiver unless it's a comeback pattern or a screen... I know we have injuries, but every other team seams to be able to do it against us... even with subs, like in Tampa when wew got burned by a backup rookie receiver... Jacobs is supposed to have all that speed and his been here 3 years and still can't get open...
