G. Williams likely to pass on Lions job

Williams likely to pass on Lions job

When a coach gets fired, people start throwing out names as possible replacements. Be careful what you believe. Often it's only half-informed speculation. Take the name Gregg Williams, for instance. Many have mentioned the Redskins' defensive coordinator for the Lions' job. But word out of Washington is that Williams is in line to succeed Joe Gibbs and won't be wooed by a lot of money. He is excited by few head-coaching opportunities, and Detroit isn't one of them.

Why, oh why, would anybody actually want to take the Lions head coaching job? Are there THAT many masochists out there in the assistant coach/coordinator ranks?

Only way you take that job, is if you take Matt Millen's along with it.

As long as Millen is there, you can't take that job and feel you have any sort of security or that anyone above you will have your back.

And I don't honestly see Matt Millen holding the job much longer. Loved him as a Redskin, but he's really doing a poor job as the team president in Detroit. Somewhere along the line, some of the responsibility for their performance has to come back to bite him somewhere that I'm sure he'd rather not be bitten.

People said the same thing about the Arizona job and just look at how a great coach like Dennis Green can turn around even a sorry organization like that.

;)

Seriously, its really too bad that fans aren't able to fire team ownership periodically.

I think it's too soon to say that organization has been "turned around."

They're set at WR and might be OK at RB. Can't see that they can be too secure in what they have at QB though.

Amen...if that were the case there'd be someone with a Redskin belt buckle that wouldn't be an owner any longer.

I'm assuming that you mean "next" as in "next after Gibbs wins his 4th"?

Good, because I don't like to fly, but I'd go over to Merry Olde England to have a sit-down chat with you over a few beers if you'd thought that Gibbs wasn't gonna win another one before he goes!

He told Bram on sportstalk 980 that he turned down 2 interviews last year (1 he was pretty sure he would have gotten) and he plans on doing the samething this year.

He already makes more than ALL of the assistance in the NFL and more than some of the head coaches. He says he likes the area and that his duration with the team was discussed before he took the job

Rams | Williams a head coaching candidate?
Sat, 3 Dec 2005 21:34:15 -0800

Jim Thomas, of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, reports the St. Louis Rams are expected to have a new head coach in 2006 and Washington Redskins defensive coordinator Gregg Williams could be a solid candidate for the job, assuming current head coach Mike Martz is not brought back. Williams looks to be a leading candidate, particularly if team president John Shaw goes with a defensive-oriented coach, as suspected.
